Welcome Home
From 1870 to 1930 the Canadian Government operated "The Homestead Project" as an offering of
free farm land to settle the Prairie Provinces.
This 1906 census section of OGSPI is intended only as a listing of Prairie families with Ontario born members
or documented Ontario connections.
Province Ontario Born Total
Manitoba 79,002 365,688
Saskatchewan 54,474 257,763
Alberta 30,486 185,412
Total 163,962 808,863
As of February 2003 the
Alberta Family Histories Society www.afhs.ab.ca
is working towards indexing
the complete 1906 census of Manitoba Saskatchewan Alberta. Rather than scrolling for hours through unindexed
films in search of your own ancestors or randomly picking Ontario names to type for OGSPI we ask that Ontario
Genealogy Society members with ancestors who "went West" share their Excel spreadsheet and typing skills
as volunteers over the internet with the Alberta Family Histories Society.
The Ontario Genealogical Society and OGSPI show how much can be achieved when individual county and district
hobbyist groups within Ontario come together and share the results. Take another look at the numbers above
and visualize the 1906 census as a first opportunity for interprovincial co-operation in documenting the
greatest group migration in Canadian History.
The Alberta contact is Judith Rempel e-mail rempel@irsolutions.net
If you have Prairie branches on your tree be sure to check Dave Obee's site
www.interlinkbookshop.com/dominion.htm
that explains the section/township/range/meridian co-ordinate system.
Dave wrote a book called
Back to the Land: A Genealogical Guide to Finding Farms on the Canadian Prairies
