The name of the father of Catherine

is apparently established by a will found in the records of the Home District
Surrogate Court.
O'CALLAGHAN
HYDE
HOLMES of Whitby Township, gentleman, died 29 July 1834,
leaving a will which mentions his wife Isabella, eldest son Thomas
HOLMES,
2nd son O'CALLAGHAN
HOLMES, and daughters Catherine and Isabella.
A provision in the will shows that he was about to set out on a visit
to his estate at Derygreag, Co. Cork Ireland, but it seems he got no
further than Quebec City, as the probate papers say he died there,
just over a month after writing his will.
His marriage is found in the small collection of marriage records kept by
the Clerk of the Peace for the Home District, known as the
Stephen Heward Register :

This marriage (with a minor variation in the date)
is also referred to in what is surely the most unusual entry to be found
in the Home District Marriage Register, which reads as follows :
"l Isabella
HOLMES do solemnly swear that l did publicly intermarry with
O'CALLAGHAN
HYDE
HOLMES at Whitby on the twentieth day of June in the
year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty nine and that
there is now living issue of the said marriage Thomas
HOLMES born on the
8th day of July 1830,
Isabella HOLMES born on the 29th day of March in the year 1832 and
O'CALLAGHAN
HOLMES born on the 28 day of April 1834
and that such marriage was solmenized (sic) by John B.
WARREN Esquire
of the Township of Whitby in the Home District."

From the above, it would appear that Isabella
YOUNG was the mother of 3
of the 4 children of
O'CALLAGHAN
HYDE
HOLMES, but not his daughter Catherine.
Just who the mother of Catherine was is uncertain,
but the very fact that Isabella deemed it wise to have a record of her
family entered in the official records seems to indicate that some unusual
circumstances surrounded this family.
