Being born big may have saved the life of Nicolas Joaquim Rodrigues ISABEL, who was born with a rare heart condition.
Nicolas was rushed into surgery when he was less than a day old, and his 9¾ pounds gave doctors lots to work with. "You can imagine open-heart surgery on a smaller baby," says his father, Nelson.
The infant seemed perfectly normal at his birth on August 20. But he refused food and within hours he was showing symptoms of distress.
Nicolas was diagnosed with total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, a rare condition in which blood doesn't flow properly into the heart, and was taken to the Hospital for Sick Children. When his parents saw him after surgery, his tiny body was riddled with tubes and instruments. "It was like a really bad dream," his mother, Marguerett ISABEL, says.
But the couple, both 31, say Nicolas recovered fast from then on. They praise the Sick Kids medical team led by Dr. Glen VAN ARSDELL.
The ISABELs had been trying for years to have a baby, but Ms. ISABEL says they're in no hurry to have another child: "We want to spoil this one before we have any more."

"Les deux grands frères", Matthieu and Justin, are very excited and proud to announce the birth of their little brother and sister, Jean-Marc Roland and Claire Ann Marie. Jean-Marc and Claire arrived, as scheduled, at 2: 28 and 2:29 p.m. respectively on December 19th, 2007 at McMaster University Medical Centre. Jean-Marc weighed in at 6 pounds 5 oz. and measured 19¾"while petite Claire tipped the scales at 5 lbs and measured 19". Enchanted and jubilant mamans, Terry and Patricia, are overjoyed with their precious Christmas presents while slowly overcoming the delightful shock of doubling their family in one year. Atticus and Cerridwen welcomed the kindle with the same unbridled resignation accorded to Matthieu and Justin. Jean-Marc and Claire are enveloped with much love by their grandparents, William and Delilah HANCOCK of Fillmore, Saskatchewan, and Carl and Yvonne LEFEBOUR of Toronto, as well as their uncles and aunts, Tyler and Jamie, Susan and Joern, Lawrence and Marni, and cousins, Mia and Hunter. Held close in our hearts at this time is the memory of Jean-Marc and Claire's Uncle Robert. We are very grateful to the extraordinary Doctor Rolando RUIZ- CEPEDA, a good friend and gifted doctor, who once again provided us with the gold standard in health care and, after nearly a decade, with a legacy of stories for all of our children. A very special thank you goes to Doctor Robert HUTCHINSON/HUTCHISON whose experience, clinical skills and kindness (not to mention sense of humour) throughout the prenatal period and in the delivery room ensured the safe, mercifully "uneventful" arrival of our babies. Thanks as well to Doctors ARYA, MALINOWSKI, and KANE- CORRIVEAU who, along with the incredible labour/delivery and maternity nurses, took great care of us in hospital and got us home in time for Christmas. To our Friends (you know who you are!) who are now openly mocking us with all things pink and blue, we thank you for your enduring Friendships, love and support (and food) and are fortunate to have a wonderful circle of Friends who care for all six of us. Like their older siblings, Jean-Marc and Claire will carry their namesakes' names with the pride and privilege befitting the caliber and character of remarkable people who made - and continue to make - a difference.
