Mike GREENWOOD is no stranger to running red lights as a fireman in Oakville, but there was a little emergency in his wife's stomach that made him zip past them recently.
"He ran a few red lights to get there, but it was early Sunday morning," said his 35-year-old wife Jennifer WATSON, who is a social worker.
Emmett Watson's arrival on June 19 (Father's Day) after 7½ hours of labour was no three-alarm blaze, according to Mrs. WATSON. "It went more smoothly than I expected."
Sleeping when her water broke at 1 a.m., she phoned her husband, who was working a night shift, and he came home immediately. Then, they waited until the dull contractions intensified and came in shorter intervals.
By the time they made it to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, Mr. GREENWOOD, 40, was quickly whisked away from filling out paperwork to the delivery room.
After only 30 minutes of pushing, the 7-pound, 8-ounce boy appeared on the scene.
"It went pretty fast for a first," Mrs. WATSON noted, saying she was expecting 12 to 18 hours of labour.
Mr. GREENWOOD greeted his son by saying, "Hi, it's me. It's your Daddy speaking," which was what he said when Emmett was in the womb.
The new parents expect that they'll have more little "personal" emergencies in the future.
