Paramedics make special delivery
Crew ends up taking mother and newborn to hospital

Sydney DAVISON wasn't due to be born until tomorrow, but the eight pound, 12 ounce girl had another timetable.
She arrived last Monday, nine days early, and inaugurated two Grey County paramedics into their profession's "order of the stork pin."
Sydney's mom, Sandra DAVISON, had experienced some minor contractions earlier in the day but had been out with her older child, Paige, 3. Back home about mid-afternoon, the contractions returned in a rush.
DAVISON called her neighbour, Wendy ROBERTSON. There wasn't time to call an attending midwife.
ROBERTSON dialed 911. Paramedics and city firefighters rushed to the DAVISON's west side Owen Sound home. Paramedics Melissa KLAGES and Sherry FOSTER found DAVISON in full contraction with the baby's head crowning.
"They were here really fast but then it was a blur," DAVISON said of the sudden home birth.
"My partner was attending. She talked to mom while I got some of our equipment together and she just said 'Mom's ready to push, we're having the baby here,' KLAGES said in an interview Wednesday at the DAVISON home.
The paramedics laid DAVISON on the dining room floor and got to work. The baby was born within minutes. City firefighter Andrew COOPER, who is also a trained paramedic, cut the umbilical cord before mother and child were transported to hospital by ambulance.
Mike DAVISON, the father, was at work in Wiarton at the time. Phone calls from home directed him to meet his new daughter in the hospital in Owen Sound.
Afterward, FOSTER described it as her "dream call," KLAGES said.
KLAGES and FOSTER, both mothers, trained together at Conestoga College and have worked together with Grey County Emergency Medical Service for six years.
Basic training includes delivery emergencies such as breach presentations and umbilical cord complications. In training, they attend live hospital births, but it's relatively rare in the Grey County service for paramedics to actually deliver babies.
"We get the calls all the time and usually we get them to hospital and it's pretty run of the mill," KLAGES said. "It's pretty cool," she said actually delivering a baby.
Paramedics welcome such calls. The majority of their work involves heart attacks and the trauma of auto collisions.
"Delivery of a baby is probably one of the best calls for paramedics," duty supervisor Ian GRAHAM said. He's a 25-year veteran of the profession with 18 years of service in Toronto and 12 births to his credit - and the stork pins to show for them.
The Grey County service plans to present KLAGES and FOSTER with stork pins soon.
Wednesday at the DAVISON home, Sydney Ann Kathleen DAVISON - her two middle names taken from the middle names of both grandmothers, Val DRAPER and Sharon DREWLO - cooed in her mother's arms.
"She was supposed to wait for me," said Drewla, Sandra DAVISON's mother, who arrived Sunday from Thunder Bay.
"I figured she would be born between the 19th and the 24th, but not so. She decided to come earlier."
