Never ask a lady about her age.
So goes the old etiquette tip.
But you can forget that little tidbit of advice when you're in the company of Ethel SULLIVAN.
She wants the world to know exactly how long she's been around and relished seeing the look on the face of a stranger yesterday as she blew out candles on her birthday cake.
"People would say, 'Oh my, you don't look like 105!'" said SULLIVAN, a silver-haired lady with a girlish giggle who was born on the 4th of July in 1900. "Oh, it's fun. Such a life!"
And as SULLIVAN celebrated that life, she was only too willing to share one of her secrets for longevity. "A little bit of wine just makes a meal feel so good."
SULLIVAN didn't need any bubbly to feel good as she celebrated her remarkable birthday in her seniors' apartment building at Dundas St. W. and Islington Ave.
She was decked out for her special day in a water pearl necklace and a beautiful violet blue dress that her only son Adrian bought during a trip to Florida.
"She always dresses smart. She has at least 24 dresses in her wardrobe," whispered Lillian, her daughter-in-law.
SULLIVAN likes to look her best at all times, but especially when she's the focus of media attention. And SULLIVAN really knows how to perform for the cameras, as she did for at least one television videographer who asked her to prove how able-bodied she is.
SULLIVAN moved in to her kitchen with the help of her walker. She grabbed a bottle of orange juice and poured herself a cup.
She still cooks her own meals and "is a very good eater," according to party attendee Angella MIKE, a staff member with Storefront Humber, a charity group that helps the seniors manage their daily lives.
SULLIVAN has been living alone in her one-bedroom apartment operated by Toronto Community Housing since her husband died in 1978.
She gets up at about 8 a.m. and makes her own bed. Then SULLIVAN gets a visit from MIKE, who comes to help her bathe. During the day, she reads two free daily newspapers, pedals on her stationary bicycle two to three times, and watches television to entertain herself.
At 7 p.m., a woman from Storefront Humber comes up to tuck her into bed.
"She is a really nice, special lady," said Storefront's MIKE. "She appreciates every little thing you do for her."
SULLIVAN was born Ethel Hélène LENDREVILLE at her family's home at Richmond St. W. and Bathurst St.
Her long life has left SULLIVAN with plenty of fond memories.
Some of those favourite memories revolve around music.
SULLIVAN used to perform in a nightclub on Lake Shore Blvd. W. near the Humber River.
"There were five in the band and I played piano," she recalled. "It was a lot of fun. Jazz is the best music."
After finishing middle school, SULLIVAN worked as a seamstress in a garment factory.
When she married Ambrose L. SULLIVAN, a welder with the Canadian Pacific Railway, she quit her job.
But she had to return to work in the factory when her husband lost his job during the Great Depression.
When asked to reveal a secret to longevity, SULLIVAN said, "Mind your own business and you won't have any troubles and you won't have any worries."

'I just can't wait to take them home'

When the newborn cries of Maia Cristina VAGUEIRO rang through a London hospital delivery room last week, parents Paul and Cristina broke into tears of joy.
"But then I pulled it together," Paul said. "I had work to do."
Video camera in hand, Paul watched in awe as that first proclamation of "It's a girl," was followed within a minute by another "It's a girl," then "It's a boy," and finally, "It's a girl."
The VAGUEIROs' miracle quadruplets were letting out a chorus of wails, assuring their apprehensive parents they had arrived and that each had a healthy set of lungs.
And the news just keeps getting better.
Though the babies were born Friday by caesarean section, about six weeks before their due date, they spent only four days in St.…Joseph's Health Care's neo-natal intensive care unit before being moved to a "progressive" ward.
The move is a sign they are doing remarkably well, said Renato NATALE, associate chief of obstetrics for London hospitals, who oversaw a team handling the quadruplets.
Most quads do well to stay 29 weeks in the womb, NATALE said. For Cristina to make it to 34 weeks and two days was "excellent," he said.
"I feel overjoyed," Cristina said yesterday from her hospital bed as a doting Paul handed the infants back to nurses after a brief photo shoot.
"They're perfect and I don't think words can express how I feel about them. I just can't wait to take them home and start our family."
They are, in order of birth:
- Maia Cristina, born May 5 at 10: 19 a.m., weighing four pounds.
- Hailey Nicole, Maia's identical twin, born 10: 20 a.m., weighing three pounds, 13 ounces.
- Cole Alexander, born 10: 21 a.m., at three pounds, 12 ounces.
- Sarah Vanessa, Cole's fraternal twin, born 10: 22 a.m., at four pounds, one ounce.
Cristina, drugged but conscious for the births, said the wails from firstborn Maia ended months of anxiety for her and Paul, who were shocked 10 weeks into the pregnancy to learn they were having quadruplets.
The odds of conceiving quadruplets without the aid of fertility drugs are one in 750,000, based on live births worldwide.
"As soon as they held her up and I heard her crying, I felt like, 'It's okay, it's okay,' " Cristina said.
The couple had been warned more than 90 per cent of quadruplets are born prematurely, have a low birth weight and are at five times greater risk of birth defects and disabilities.
"I realize how lucky we are," Cristina said of the healthy infants.
They'll likely remain in hospital another three weeks to ensure they're feeding well and don't become jaundiced.
"It's like we prepared for the worst and hoped for the best and we're so blessed that they're doing so well," she said.
Paul said emerging from the delivery room immediately after the births -- caught on video -- was quite the sight.
"It was like a Boxing Day sale," the beaming new dad recalls. "There were all these people, my family, Cristina's family, nursing staff -- all cheering and giving me high-fives. Even the custodian gave me a hug."
Cristina had spent eight weeks in hospital awaiting the births. Though she's been aching to get home, she dreads the idea of being discharged without her children. She'll likely be discharged in days.
While she recovers from surgery, Paul has been on regular bottle-feeding detail, using Cristina's pumped breast milk. Cristina has also begun breastfeeding, which she describes as her first chance to bond and cuddle the babies.
"Yesterday was the first time I actually felt like I was a mom because I was able to breastfeed and give them a sponge bath," she said.
Cristina, 26, and Paul, 30, said they're grateful for the offers of help, including a corporate donation of children's clothing, since news of the young couple's instant family began spreading two weeks ago.
But they're also well aware of the challenges before them.
Paul, a pharmaceutical sales rep for Novartis, who works from home, had the basement of the family's home hurriedly refinished to house his office to make room for a main-floor nursery. A new van was purchased.
But diapers, change tables, formula, strollers, diaper pails, receiving blankets -- the list is endless.
"We're going to take it one day at a time," Cristina said. "If we look ahead to them being toddlers, the terrible twos, that's overwhelming."
