OATES,
Lesley
Ruth -- Hatch:
By Oliver MOORE,

Unable to have any more children and pining for the one she gave
up for adoption, Judy
WOOSTER jumped at the chance to celebrate
the "rebirth" of her 46-year-old daughter.
They found each other about five weeks ago, nearly a half-century
after Ms. WOOSTER was forced to give her up and more than two
decades after she starting looking. Elated, Ms.
WOOSTER took
the unusual step of posting a birth notice. "To me, as far as
I was concerned, she had been born again, given back to me,"
she explained.
Her daughter supported the idea. "It blew me away," Lesley Ruth
OATES said. "Mom so eloquently included my parents in the birth
announcement, it just hit the core of my soul."
Although Ms.
WOOSTER is overjoyed at seeing her daughter again,
her mood darkens when she describes a situation all too common
in 1950s Toronto. Pregnant at 17, she was sent to a home for
unmarried mothers, unable to go outside lest someone see her.
"They take a child away at birth, they did then, you didn't even
get a chance to see it," said Ms.
WOOSTER, a retired librarian
who grew up in North Toronto and now lives in Willowdale.
Ms. OATES is married with four children of her own. She lives
in Bracebridge, but expects a lot of travel back and forth to
Willowdale.
