Don't ever jest with Melanie
PUGLIESE about that shop-till-you-drop
experience. When her water broke October 19, she delayed going
to hospital until contractions became severe. Seven hours later,
she was no closer to delivery, and a nurse advised her to walk
around the mall. As she hobbled through Fairview Mall, she recalls,
"People were looking at me, huge and sweaty, and by 4 p.m. I
was in pain on all fours in the underwear department of the Bay."
Back at the hospital, a whirlpool and then an epidural gave some
relief. Finally, after a 27-hour ordeal, at 9: 30 a.m. on October
20, Carston Gregory
MacKAY made his debut at 7 pounds, 12 ounces.
Ms. PUGLIESE, 35, an English teacher, had contemplated the name
Carson -- as in "son of a car buff," in honour of her husband,
contractor Alex
MacKAY.
But
Mr.
MacKAY, 32, heard a radio announcer
mention Karsten Andersen, a Norwegian conductor, and when they
were shopping one day he spelled out "Carston" in big wooden
kids' letters. Its distinctiveness settled the issue. Gregory
was chosen because Scottish middle names beginning with "G" signify
good luck, which the couple are hoping for in any future birthing
experience.

Vanessa, Angela," says Ronnie, a 40-year-old store manager. "But
the other thing was, Jennifer didn't want to use the name of
anybody we knew, or I had dated.
"We liked Melissa, and what sort of confirmed it was that Melissa
was on both of her godparents' lists."
As far as Harley goes, she'll probably have to answer motorcycle
questions her entire life, but...
"No, there is no biker connection," he says.
"In the Jewish faith, when someone passes, you name a child using
the first letter of their name," says Jennifer, 37, a director
of sales. "My grandfather's name was Henry. Well, we couldn't
name her that, and we didn't want a Hailey or a Heather. But
then we heard Harley, and just loved it. It's just so unique."

This Sunday, February 9 from 2 to 4 p.m., there will be an open
house to celebrate Pearl
PURDOM's 85th birthday.
For close to 20 years, customers to the Dominion Store in Aldershot
will remember Pearl. She always greeted you with a friendly smile
and shared many recipes with customers. I hear some of those
recipes were "keepers" and delicious meals are served to the
many Friends who are invited for dinner.
The West called Pearl and, for a few months, she settled in Edmonton
with her daughter, Diane, but it wasn't long before Aldershot
beckoned her "home." Pearl and Diane returned in the Fall of
2002 and settled into their new home. Pearl is looking forward
to greeting her Friends at the party at East Plains United Church.
Family are coming from Edmonton, Toronto, Whitby and locations

New Year's baby surprises parents

He was barely six hours old, but yesterday the bouncing baby
boy was already the centre of media attention.
The as-yet-unnamed baby, born after putting Mom through two days
of labour, arrived seconds after midnight on New Year's Day to
become Toronto's first baby of 2007, weighing in at 7 pounds
and 13 ounces.
"I was nervous and scared," said the infant's 32-year-old father,
Patrick THANARATNAM, shortly after his first child arrived --
at about 40 seconds into the new year -- at Scarborough Grace
Hospital.
It was his first time holding a newborn,
THANARATNAM admitted.
"My hands were shaking."
Seconds after the Toronto baby made his debut, another boy was
born at Mississauga's Credit Valley Hospital -- officially at
12: 01 a.m. -- to become the 905 region's first arrival of 2007.
Komal and Surinder
PURI, who had been awaiting the arrival of
their baby for a day, were quick to dub him with the nickname
"Krish," after the traditional Hindu name Krishna.
Krish is their third child and second son.
"We are excited and pleasantly surprised about the timing," said
proud father Surinder, who admitted to watching television as
the baby arrived.
"As soon as they rang in the new year, the baby was born," he
said, adding he was watching revellers in New York's Times Square
celebrate as his wife was giving birth.
It's not just moms and babies who have it rough.
THANARATNAM, who said he had never picked up newborn babies because
he was afraid of dropping them, will also have to pay $100 to
his sister, who bet on the infant's New Year's Day arrival.
For his wife, Mary Julian
BENADICT, the anxiety all came from
giving birth for the first time. "But when I see his face now,
I am very happy," she said in Tamil.
When it comes to the baby's future, his mom said, "We are going
to educate him well, so he can become a doctor."
The couple, originally from Sri Lanka, was married more than
two years ago.
While THANARATNAM has lived in Toronto for about 15 years, his
wife moved to Canada in the fall of 2005.
In Mississauga, Krish's mom, Komal, said the delivery of her
third child wasn't as easy as the first two, adding she is still
in some pain.
"Delivering a baby is not easy," she said, adding she went into
labour at 5: 45 p.m. the night before.
Commenting on the days ahead, she said, "It's a boy, so I don't
know how much trouble it's going to cause me."
The couple plans a big celebration in about six weeks, and will
go to a temple for blessings.
As for Toronto's first baby, his name will in part be decided
by one of the baby's uncles and his baptism will take place in
another month.
And as for the baby becoming a doctor, the father says, "Her
wish is my wish."
