Don't ever jest with Melanie PUGLIESE about that shop-till-you-drop experience. When her water broke October 19, she delayed going to hospital until contractions became severe. Seven hours later, she was no closer to delivery, and a nurse advised her to walk around the mall. As she hobbled through Fairview Mall, she recalls, "People were looking at me, huge and sweaty, and by 4 p.m. I was in pain on all fours in the underwear department of the Bay."
Back at the hospital, a whirlpool and then an epidural gave some relief. Finally, after a 27-hour ordeal, at 9: 30 a.m. on October 20, Carston Gregory MacKAY made his debut at 7 pounds, 12 ounces.
Ms. PUGLIESE, 35, an English teacher, had contemplated the name Carson -- as in "son of a car buff," in honour of her husband, contractor Alex MacKAY. But Mr. MacKAY, 32, heard a radio announcer mention Karsten Andersen, a Norwegian conductor, and when they were shopping one day he spelled out "Carston" in big wooden kids' letters. Its distinctiveness settled the issue. Gregory was chosen because Scottish middle names beginning with "G" signify good luck, which the couple are hoping for in any future birthing experience.

First baby came early

The region's first baby arrived seven minutes after midnight yesterday, born to a Strathroy-area couple with a reputation for being late. William Richard Dennis CRUICKSHANK, blond locks and all, entered this world a week early and seemingly ready to party, staying up until the wee hours with his proud parents, Jenny and Dennis CRUICKSHANK.
More than 22 inches long and weighing eight pounds, 11 ounces, Will, as his parents call him, took everyone by surprise.
"It was a shock the baby was early. Dennis and I run late," Jenny CRUICKSHANK said yesterday from her bed at Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital.
The baby, the couple's first, was delivered by Nick BUMA, the same doctor who delivered Jenny CRUICKSHANK and her siblings.
Jenny CRUICKSHANK went into labour at 10 a.m. Friday and was in a lot of pain from 1: 30 p.m. on, she said. An epidural at 8 p.m. only numbed her on one side and when the baby didn't advance, BUMA performed a caesarean section.
The couple didn't realize until later that one year had slipped into another.
"I don't think we'll have as exciting a New Year's again," Jenny CRUICKSHANK said.
London's first baby of 2005 arrived at Children's Hospital of Western Ontario at 12: 25 a.m, a seven-pound, nine-ounce boy, Trenton Douglas PERCY, son of Kristen Faye McKENZIE and Don PERCY.
Next came Ella Rose Jeanne TRYON, daughter of Michelle and Patrick TRYON. Ella, at seven pounds, 10 ounces, was born at 1: 09 a.m. at St. Joseph's Hospital.
Other first babies around the region included:
- Saint Thomas-Elgin General Hospital: A baby girl not yet named was born at 6: 07 p.m. to Michelle and Ross GRAHAM. The baby weighed six pounds, 10 ounces.
- Woodstock General Hospital: Ethan STUBBE, son of Marianne and David STUBBE, was born at 3: 22 p.m. weighing eight pounds, two ounces.
- Bluewater Health -- Sarnia General Hospital: Saige HALLETT- PLAINE, daughter of Natasha WILLIS and Jason PLAINE, was born at 2: 26 a.m. weighing six pounds, 12 ounces.
