"It was a complete surprise. Mike's brother stood up and said
they were getting married," said one friend.

BREWSTER m@ca.on.middlesex_county.london.london_free_press 2003-06-23 published
Beep, beep, it's drive-through weddings
Patrick MALONEY,
Free
Press
Reporter
A Londoner will alter life at the altar when she opens Canada's
first drive-through wedding window this week. "Obviously this
is going to be a novelty," Dale
BREWSTER, the entrepreneur who
brought London the $99 shotgun wedding at her Crystal Wedding
Chapel on Wharncliffe Road, said of her latest chapter in the
book of love.
She said she got the idea when she married in Las Vegas 10 years
ago.
"The one in Las Vegas is very popular. (People) want to do something
different, that's the biggest thing. Why get married conventionally?"
Such is
BREWSTER's business philosophy, which is built on rental
flowers and spur-of-the-moment lovebirds.
The Crystal chapel opened last fall and does about 20 weddings
a month. But
BREWSTER expects business to pick up, thanks to
the drive-through and, well, other high-profile changes to the
Canadian marriage system.
Being in the wedding business,
BREWSTER is getting no shortage
of calls from same-sex couples.
"I don't care if you're gay or straight, brides want to walk
down the aisle," she said. And
BREWSTER, the consummate businessperson,
isn't letting any controversy get to her.
"This is a privately-run wedding chapel," she said. "I'm not
doing this for the good of my health here. I've got to make a
living (and) everybody's money is the same colour."
Now her focus is on turning a window facing her chapel's parking
lot into a Vegas-style drive-through. Two couples are slated
to use it in August -- the first passing through in a pickup
truck -- and
BREWSTER hopes the attraction will start off in
an appropriately unusual way this Saturday.
Two London Transit employees getting hitched have rented -- you
guessed it -- a city bus to load up their guests for the trip
to the Crystal chapel for the ceremony.
After exchanging vows in the chapel, bride-to-be Karen
MORDEN
said she and her new husband, Alan
BERNARD, will start celebrating
with a trek through the drive-through.
"We're both really madly in love and it's just going to be fun,"
said MORDEN, a 53-year-old dispatcher. "We're just going to have
a big party."
BREWSTER doesn't expect the wedding window to cause traffic jams,
but she's fairly certain the $169 deal will strike the same chord
that brings nearly two dozen couples a month into the chapel.
Whether to renew vows or get hitched, perhaps for a repeat wedding,
BREWSTER expects the window to be a hit.
"It's hilarious. It's going to be a novelty," she said. "I get
a lot of couples that want to do it quick and not spend a lot
of money, and why not do it and have fun? I have stress-free
weddings."

It's aye aye for happy pair's 'I do'
Crowning their romantic courtship, a Sarnia couple has won the
Tall Ships wedding contest and will say their vows on deck August
Carolyn WONG,
Free
Press
Reporter
Watching the tall ships in Sarnia Bay was a big part of childhood
for Justin
HAYES and Jaime
BECHARD. In
August, as the majestic
ships return, they'll become an even larger part of their lives
when the Sarnia couple ties the knot aboard one of the historic
sailing vessels.
The Tall Ships Dream Wedding Contest called for romantic proposal
stories from couples all across Canada.
Contest organizers chose four stories, including the Sarnia couple's,
from more than 250 entries. The stories were posted on the Tall
Ships Sarnia Web site for the public to read and choose their
favourite one.
"I was shocked and just blown away,
BECHARD, 23, said of her
reaction when she found out she had won. "I just thought, 'Pinch
me.'"
The couples' romantic stories also were aired on television.
"We went for a taping and heard some other great stories," said
HAYES, 31. "I had no idea that this would happen."
The couple's story included a surprise horse-and-carriage ride
to a Sarnia restaurant overlooking the river, where
HAYES ordered
a dessert topped with a diamond ring.
He promptly got down on bended knee and said, "Jaime, today we've
spent a beautiful day together and there is nothing I would rather
do than to spend many more days with you in the future. You are
the most important person in my life and I will always love you.
"Will you marry me?"
After BECHARD accepted the proposal, the couple went to the restaurant
where they first met to celebrate with family and Friends.
"We were looking for total romantic appeal, as well as the way
they spoke about it," organizer Bernie
BROCKLEHURST said. "Uniqueness,
thoughtfulness and creativity were the main things."
The couple, engaged May 17, can expect a stress-free wedding
August 22 with the clothing, hair, makeup, limo and reception
all taken care of in a package worth $10,000.
"I always said, 'When we do get married, I want something different,
but our options are limited,'"
BECHARD said. "But this is a
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
Tourism officials expect thousands of visitors when the 13-vessel
flotilla of tall ships puts into Sarnia August 21-24. Besides
shipboard activities, the festival includes an August 23 concert
by the Doobie Brothers, the legendary California pop-rock band.

This couple just clicked
Dan BROWN left the big question to the end of his online column.
By Daniela
SIMUNAC, Sun Media, Fri., October 26, 2007
Yesterday was almost a regular day at work for Amanda
TACCONE.
The CTV web journalist was surfing the Internet, reading
up on a recipe before she decided to read her boyfriend's column,
posted online yesterday.
And as she read the weekly column by Dan
BROWN, online editor
at The London Free Press, she began to tremble and tears started
flowing.
"Amanda, will you marry me?" the final line of Brown's column
read.
"Yes," she replied when she called him on her cellphone at work
from her office in Scarborough.
Brown's column, which is posted every Thursday, caught
TACCONE
by surprise.
"I knew it was coming, but I had no idea the when, the where
and the how," she said. "I never expected it would be online
or that would be made this public."
Soon afterward, she e-mailed the column to family and Friends.
"It's amazing how everyone found out so quickly."
The proposal generated nearly 50 comments on Brown's blog throughout
the day and he received e-mails from as far away as Abu Dhabi
in the United Arab Emirates.
"I thought that I could probably do a better job in print, than
I could in person," said
BROWN of his cyberspace proposal.
"It's really hard to boil your feelings down to just a few hundred
words," he said.
And the feedback, from both familiar and unfamiliar readers,
has been overwhelmingly positive,
BROWN said.
"What stands out is, there was no hate mail,"
BROWN said of the
proposal column.
The two began dating 4½ years ago when they met at Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation headquarters in Toronto, where they both worked.
The Internet has been a means for them to maintain their long-distance
relationship. "It's so us," said
TACCONE. As for a wedding date,
the couple is not sure when that will be. "We said, 'Let's just
enjoy being engaged,'
TACCONE said.

After the wedding, the chill is gone
James STARES,
Kathy
MITCHELL wed in a wintry maze of ice
By Louise BROWN,
Staff
Reporter
The bride wore white -- long johns.
In fact, so did the groom. The best man wore a toque and guests
tucked hot pads in their mitts.
When it's 9 below Celsius at the altar, it takes a few props
to keep love warm.
But romance also kindled the mood yesterday, when snow buffs
Kathy MITCHELL and James
STARES tied the knot in ultimate hoser
style, inside an ice maze near the C.N. Tower.
"It's a true Canadian wedding," laughed the 31-year-old bride,
who has heard every possible cold-related joke since the couple
agreed to marry at the Pontiac Ice Maze, built this week for
the Canadian International Auto Show.
"I've been called the Ice Queen, the Ice Princess, you name it,
but we just did it because a friend of a friend at a publicity
firm was looking for a couple to get married at the maze," said
MITCHELL, a former women's hockey player who snowboards, skis
and skates with her new husband. They're going to Vermont for
a ski honeymoon.
"We talked it over and embraced the idea because we love the
outdoors."
Mind you, the bride worried her bouquet of white hydrangeas and
red roses would freeze before she could throw it. Wind scattered
the rose petals and fake snow being strewn along the path by
the eight flower girls and "snow boys."
And the groom cut the ice cake with a chain saw.
"This gives new meaning to the term 'having cold feet,'" joked
STARES, 35, as he wielded the whining power tool through all
four see-through layers.
"But despite all the glitz, we were still really getting married,
so we wanted it to be meaningful," said
MITCHELL, who had the
Louis Armstrong hit "What a Wonderful World" playing as she emerged
from the maze with her twin sister at her side, to take her place
on the makeshift stage.
"We were actually thinking they were going to have a beach wedding
in the Caribbean, so this was a bit of a surprise," explained
Dorothy MITCHELL, mother of the bride, who clutched a red blanket
over her lap in the front row of the open-air chapel with fold-out
chairs and the Gardiner Expressway in the background.
"But you only live once, so it's fun."
MITCHELL and
STARES both work in product management, and were
introduced 18 months ago by mutual Friends who yesterday served
as maid of honour and best man on the gusty stage.
The couple got engaged last December and had been thinking of
getting married on a sun-baked island until approached about
the frosty alternative.
"But they've both been married before in traditional church weddings,
so I think they wanted to be more casual this time, and just
thought this would be a lot of fun," said Bev
STARES, mother
of the groom.
Still, there are logistical challenges to putting your nuptials
on ice:
A heated tent was provided where the 50 guests could wait until
the 15-minute ceremony began.
Burlap was laid along the bride's route in the maze so her red
high heels wouldn't slip on the ice.
The bride wore a heavy white fur-trimmed cape over her gown,
which was bought in the Spadina fashion district and featured
an unusual red top.
City hall marriage official Aestus
ROGERS had to compete to be
heard with the wind howling across his microphone as he read
the non-denominational vows.
ROGERS too wore many layers beneath
a heavy cape.
Guests were handed gift-wrapped hand-warmers for inside their
mitts as they watched the exchange of vows. The bride kept on
her white gloves as she slipped on her wedding ring, while the
groom donned his on a bare hand.
The newlyweds drove off in a car dragging ice cube trays off
the bumper.
After the sub-zero service, the party proceeded to warmer digs
for the reception at a King St. restaurant.
But flower girl Hannah
BARRICK, the bride's 12-year-old niece,
summed up the family's sentiments about the unusual ceremony.
"I think it was cool -- in both ways."

Kristin ANDERSONS and Jason
VAN
BRUGGEN -- Match:
By Judith Tenenbaum, Saturday, March 5, 2005 - Page M6
On January 22 in Halifax, 93-year-old convalescing Zizi
ANDERSONS
dressed up, poured herself champagne and listened on the telephone
to her granddaughter's nuptials in Toronto. Only months before,
Kristin ANDERSONS and Jason
VAN
BRUGGEN had been planning a summer
wedding, but brushes with death in their respective families
and news of an impending birth prompted them to redefine their
priorities and pull together a ceremony in a matter of weeks.
"All of these events occurring at the same time brought everything
into sharp focus," Mr.
VAN
BRUGGEN says.
Products of preppy Havergal and Upper Canada Colleges respectively,
both say their families were paramount in shaping their lives.
"We had incredible opportunities growing up, family vacations
in Europe, at resorts and I practically grew up on the lake,"
Ms. ANDERSONS says.
Although a reluctant Mr.
VAN
BRUGGEN moved at the age of 15 with
his family to the Netherlands for the rest of his high-school
career, he acknowledges today that his parents made the decision
with the best of intentions. "I improved my Dutch and French,
but was still able to come back here in the summer to go to camp
and now understand what my parents were trying to do and how
it benefited me.... They gave me lots of opportunity and I embraced
every aspect of the outdoor lifestyle."
The couple, now both 32, had instant chemistry when they met
in December of 2002 at a party thrown by a mutual friend. They
found that they share an inherent love of the outdoors -- Mr.
VAN
BRUGGEN is an avid canoeist, mountain climber and competitive
rugby player while Ms.
ANDERSONS danced, competed in tennis,
skiing and volleyball and rowed crew for Havergal and the Argonaut
Rowing Club.
Each had also recently returned to Toronto after spending years
abroad. Mr.
VAN
BRUGGEN, a graduate of Queen's University in
Kingston, was making a foray into filmmaking after travelling
and working in international development in Africa. Ms.
ANDERSONS,
meanwhile, had studied film at the University of California at
Los Angeles and attended the L.A. Film School on a scholarship.
But she says, "My family and Friends were here. I'd been away
a long time and my agenda was to see if I could move home."
By March of 2003, encouraged by her new flame, she did, and decided
to pursue a master's degree here in her original discipline,
clinical psychology.
The romance didn't diminish Mr.
VAN
BRUGGEN's wanderlust, but
his travels brought their relationship into focus.
He spent the winter of 2003 filming in South America, jaunted
home and was off again to India last summer. "It put a strain
on the relationship," he admits. The realization that he had
travelled to 75 countries gave him pause to reflect and confirm
Irish author George Moore's dictum, "A man travels the world
over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it."
When he returned, the couple purchased a home in Riverdale and
Mr. VAN
BRUGGEN proposed between touchdowns during Monday Night
Football. "It was strategic," Ms.
ANDERSONS jokes, "Jason now
has an excuse to watch every week."
Plans for a wedding this summer by her parents' cottage were
foiled on every front. They had a church but no firm date and
nearby reception venues were all booked. There was just one sure
thing, Ms.
ANDERSONS says. "I found my wedding dress, the only
thing that solidified."
In November, the pair was overjoyed to find that Ms.
ANDERSONS
was unexpectedly pregnant. "I never thought it would be that
important to be married before we had a child, since we were
spending the rest of our lives together," she says pensively.
"If it were somebody else, it would not phase me for a second,
but I realized how important it actually was to me."
Ms. ANDERSONS quickly shared her joy with her mother, but it
was tempered by news that Grandmother Zizi in Halifax needed
an emergency operation.
"My mother was ecstatic," she says, "but our exciting news was
soon accompanied by devastating news -- Jason's father had a
heart attack days later." Relishing the prospect of a grandchild,
he survived his near-fatal condition and subsequent surgery.
The couple decided that now was the time to act, Mr.
VAN
BRUGGEN
says. "We said, 'Let's get married for ourselves, our unborn
child, and the sake of our families, with Kristin's grandmother
mentally well enough to understand.' "
Within weeks, she and her mother whipped up a wedding, Ms.
ANDERSONS
says. "Doors just opened, [the University of Toronto's] Trinity
chapel was available, Massey College for a reception across the
street, the trumpet soloist, the stringed quartet and the choir
were free."
On the blizzardy evening of January 22, Reverend John
BEACH officiated
in a luminescent Trinity College Chapel as celebrants held lit
candles. Teary emotions peaked during the processional as the
bridegroom's resolute father walked up the aisle with his wife,
followed by the bride's maternal grandmother and father, and
then Ms. ANDERSONS with her brother Steve. "I'll always remember
his squeeze before he turned me over to my parents," the new
Mrs. VAN
BRUGGEN says.
Her husband says he hopes to be able to impart the same strong
sense of family to his own children. "Goals change when you start
conceiving of yourself as a family," he says, adding that his
travels affected his social awareness and religious and cultural
tolerance. "I'd love to educate my children by exposing them
to the exotic, but within the parameters of keeping them safe."
