In loving memory John Gordon
LANE,
August 5, 1916-August 9, 2001.
John LANE, a resident of Gore Bay, died at the Manitoulin Health Centre,
Little Current, on Thursday, August 9, 2001 at the age of 85 years. He was
born on Barrie Island,
son of the late George and Martha
{VANCISE}
LANE.
John attended school on Barrie Island and graduated at the age of 14, after
which he worked on farms and in the bush, until 1939, when he bought a farm.
In 1946, John married Louise
SMITH of St. Catharine's. John had a lifelong
involvement in politics, starting as a council member on Barrie Island from
1941-1960. In 1960, he moved to Gore Bay, and was on council for 4 years,
then Mayor for 5 years. In October of 1971, he was elected Progressive
Conservative
MPP and held that position until his retirement in 1987. John
had quite a remarkable career, having won 34 elections and serving 45 years
as an elected member of government. He was one of the first directors of the
Manitoulin Livestock Co-Op, and in the early '50s was chairman of organizing
Farm Forums. In 1955, he started working for the Co-Operators Insurance, and
in 1969, was named District Manager. John was a member of the Rotary Club
for 35 years, and along with Renie
NOBLE, was instrumental in founding the
Flower of Hope School, which he said was his most rewarding effort. John was
also a life long member of the Lyons Memorial United Church, and had served
in many capacities on the board of the church. John also enjoyed fishing and
hunting, and will be remembered by his hunt camp gang as the "Commander."
John was predeceased by his wife
Louise
SMITH in 1969. He later married
Leila McDOUGALL who survives. Loving and loved father of Sharon

McDOUGALL and his wife Lillian and Bob
McDOUGALL. Proud

TRICK. Dear brother of Lloyd and Evelyn
LANE
of Barrie Island and Larry and Margaret
LANE of Gore Bay. Predeceased by
grandchildren Amanda and D'Arcy and sisters Mary
WILSON,
Agnes
MORGAN and
brother Harold.
The funeral service was conducted at Lyons Memorial United Church on Sunday,
August 12 with Geraldine Bould officiating. Interment in Gordon Cemetery.
