Jeffery Kenneth REID
By Frank R. GARDINER Thursday, December 12, 2002 -- Print Edition, Page A30
Son, brother, uncle, friend. Born Jan. 18, 1945, in Goderich, Ontario Died Oct. 19 in Barrie, Ontario, of lung cancer, aged Growing up in small town Goderich, Ontario, during the early 1950s, was for Jeff and his many neighbourhood pals a wonderful Huckleberry Finn existence: dogs, hockey, golfing, cub scouts, enduring school but skipping North Street United Sunday School whenever possible, caddying and hunting for golf balls, swimming, doing "ringers" up on the Square, bell-hopping for tips at the Bedford Hotel, smoking and shooting pool at Finchers Pool Room the sole purpose being to graduate to Craigie's Pool Hall, as we lied and pretended to be much older and wiser than our 14 years.
During the summer, we learned at a very early age the fun and the dangers of beautiful Lake Huron. We played in the sand and took cavalier pride in our individual swimming abilities. Each summer, we rallied to our Goderich Swim Team at Judith Gooderham Memorial pool to beat the swim teams of Listowel, Clinton, and the dreaded Saint Mary's.
Nothing could touch us in this our wonderful arrogance of youth or so we thought -- until the early evening of Wednesday, July 27, 1960. On the Crediton sideroad heading for Grand Bend after another swim-meet victory at Saint Mary's, tragedy struck.
The 21-year-old driver of a stolen car crashed head-on into the Goderich Swim Team car, killing the drivers of both cars and injuring all other five occupants of the Goderich car. One of the occupants, Jeff REID, suffered concussion and, to quote from the Goderich Signal Star at that time, "remains semi-conscious in St. Joseph's Hospital, London."
After 31 days, Jeff regained consciousness and began to slowly recover from his massive injuries --but never fully. And Jeff knew it. We, his childhood Friends, also knew it as did his loving parents. So, too, did Jeff's younger loyal and loving brother, Rod and devoted sister, Jodie. Jeff struggled on in his characteristic fashion, but life had been changed forever.
For all the rest of us on the swim team, that small part of our life was over and we moved onward and upward in studies and life. Jeff stayed behind to battle the onset of epileptic seizures resulting from his severe head injuries. Jeff never complained as he fought on with, as he jokingly mused, "the hand fate had dealt him." As a natural, charismatic leader he released all his old Friends and family from any guilt in his charming, self-deprecating fashion. Nobody would see his tears.
Jeff was forced to follow a different and much tougher path: from high school to the navy, heavy drinking, then to construction, unemployment, failed marriages (but with brief glimpses of happiness from Alice, then Peg and later Jean McARTHUR.) His life was one of rough relationships, brief moments of fun, laughter and family, and dark moments of heavy smoking and drinking and black depression. And finally, a place to call "home" at the Simcoe Hotel in Barrie watched over by a loving, saintly woman -- Jeff's best friend and family -- Jean McARTHUR.
When diagnosed with cancer this past September (and losing breath and weight rapidly), Jeff reassured his brother Rod and sister Jodie right up to the very end that "I've lived the life I have and I can't hang my head now, I'll have to take what comes." And Jeff did just that -- hiding his fears as best he could.
At the memorial service in Barrie, Jodie read The Ordinary Man by Canadian poet Robert SERVICE. After the service, all of Jeff's family and drinking pals from all parts of his life, met to celebrate with stories, pictures, laughter and tears this quite remarkable "ordinary man."
Frank is a friend of Jeff. He crafted this with help from Jeff's siblings and Friends.
