PATON, John Lindsey -- On November 22, 2002, in Toronto, in his 82nd year, after a lengthy illness. Predeceased by parents John Henderson and Helen Lucille PATON, first wife Dorothy Sylvia TREEN, and sister Helen Jacqeline SUGDEN. Survivors include second wife Ione Gertrude McKEE of Toronto, sister Cora LOUISE of Victoria, British Columbia, brothers Alexander Ray (Orma) of Victoria, British Columbia and Elwood MacLean (Leona) of Bechard, Saskatchewan, son John Douglas of Clifford, Ontario, and daughter Shirleyanne NEWTON (George) of Clifford, Ontario, step-father of James Henry, Patricia Ione, Heather Ruth, and Thomas Elmer, and loving grandfather James, David, Dawn-Ellen, Darrin, Bruce, and Lindsey. Borne at Cottage Hospital in Regina, on October 8, 1921, John was the eldest of five children. He was raised in Bechard, Saskatchewan, where he attended Crocus Plains and Badger Hill Schools and assisted his father with the operation of a Western Grain Elevator. At 16, he attended Luther College, Regina, where he completed high school, and in 1939 earned his second year diploma from the University of Saskatchewan. He joined the Dominion Bank in Regina, where he worked until 1942. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, received radar training, went overseas to Great Britain, and was seconded to the Royal Air Force He served on the coasts of England as a Radar Operator through the rest of the war. He enjoyed his time in Britain and returned several times after the war. He returned to the bank and, on retirement from the Toronto Dominion Bank in 1984, was a Senior Vice President. John was a Member of the United Church of Canada from its formation in 1925. As a Member of St. James United Church in Etobicoke, he held positions of Trustee and Auditor, and served on the maintenance committee. He was a Member of the Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan and the Scottish Rite in Regina, a Member of the Assiniboine Club in Winnipeg, a Member of the Toronto Board of Trade, the Royal Canadian Air Force Radar Veterans' Association, Treasurer of the Regina Capitals hockey club, and a lecturer on banking at the University of Manitoba. One of John's passions was hockey, and he spent countless hours researching and accumulating previously unpublished statistics for amateur hockey, in both Canada and United States. In the late 1980's, he became a Charter Member of The Society for International Hockey Research, and later played a major role in contributing his work to the book Total Hockey, published by the National Hockey League in 1998. John also had a deep interest in history and enjoyed traveling in his retirement years. Other interests lay in football, curling, golf, square dancing, bridge, reading, railways, and his grandchildren. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Butler Chapel, 4933 Dundas Street West (between Islington and Kipling Avenues), from 4-7 p.m. Monday. Funeral Service in the Chapel on Tuesday, November 26, 2002 at 11 o'clock. Interment Sanctuary Park Cemetery. If desired, remembrances to the Alzheimer Society or the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
