Jack POSTE remembered
Teacher, Veteran, Mr. Bruce Trail
By Angela McEWEN,
The
Connection,
Page 1
The caring, compassionate, generous and kind nature of Jack
POSTE
will be missed by many.
The Town of Collingwood's legendary icon passed away last Tuesday
at leisure world Creedan Valley in Creemore.
"Everybody has different memories of this person because he was
into so many different organizations," said long-time friend
Dave KNOX. "He was a very sincere, committed Christian and he
sort of tried to follow Christian ethics in anything he did.
He was very honest and tried to think of the impact on the other
person."
The two men's paths first crossed when
KNOX was a teenager attending
Burlington
High
School, where
POSTE taught industrial arts in
1958. From there, he took a position as master teacher at lakeshore
Teacher's College, mentoring and preparing people to take up
the helm at the front of the class room.
"Our paths didn't cross again until I, as a relatively young
teacher, came up to Collingwood," said
KNOX. when
KNOX went to
sign his contract at Collingwood Collegiate Institute in 1970,
POSTE was the first teacher he saw.
"He said he remembered me," said
KNOX. "He was always a mentor
to the younger teachers."
Along with constantly helping out the teaching staff, he always
made time for the students.
"He was always willing to give his time to a kid," said
KNOX.
"If a kid had a problem, he would sit and talk with them. He
was very, very patient that way."
KNOX's father was an Royal Air Force navigator/radio operator
for the Coastal Command, and was killed in action over Norway
in April 1945. When
POSTE, who was an Royal Canadian Air Force
navigator in Bomber Command, found this out the two clicked on
a personal level.
"I appreciated Jack's interest in my father, and he was always
Willing▲ to answer my questions," said
KNOX. "
This led me to visiting
my father's grave in Norway twice, staying in the community each
time for a week and getting to know the people who care for his
grave."
The two were colleagues for 14 years at Collingwood Collegiate
Institute, and
POSTE was proud of the faculty members who became
involved in helping and assisting with the Bruce Trail and other
environmental issues.
"He, of course, was mister Bruce Trail around here," said
KNOX.
"I admired Jack's passion for environment education as well as
his understanding of Canadian and world issues."
POSTE's retirement from Collingwood Collegiate Institute in June
1984 certainly didn't keep him away from the classrooms or the
close bonds he formed with
KNOX and other staff members.
"I continued to keep in close contact with him," said
KNOX. "He
was always doing things with my environmental geography class.
One of my fondest memories comes after Jack had retired from
teaching."
POSTE dropped into the Ontario Academic Credit world issues geography
class where two students were co-leading a seminar on the state
of the environment.
"The details escape my memory, but what remains in my mind is
Jack sitting there," he said. "First listening, smiling and reacting
to their comments. Then, wading into the discussion, ever the
teacher saying, 'If a student hasn't learned, the teacher hasn't taught."'
POSTE personally took it upon himself to oversee the successful
implementation of the Bruce Trail, in the capacity of land owner relations.
"He did a tremendous amount of leg work, walking up and driving
around talking to land owners, assuring them it wouldn't hurt
their land to put a trail in," said
KNOX. "
Jack made Friends
with people and was able to convince the rural land owners the
trail was a benefit. That was sort of a behind the scenes job
land owner relations director."
His volunteerism encompassed many other organizations besides
the Blue Mountains Club of the Bruce Trail Association. He was
also on the Blue Mountain Watershed Trust Foundation, the Canadian
Youth Hotels Association, the Collingwood and District Young
Men's Christian Association, the Collingwood and District Historical
Society, the Collingwood Museum, the Collingwood Public Library
the Collingwood Watts Skiff Club, the Collingwood Naturalists
Club, the Federation of Ontario Naturalists, the Probus Club
of the Blue Mountains, the rehabilitation of the Collingwood
Harbour, the Simcoe County Historical Association, the Royal
Canadian Legion, the Senior League Endowment Society of Collingwood,
Veterans Against Nuclear Armaments and the Collingwood Classic
Aircraft Foundation.
"He was a fantastic fundraiser. when the Young Men's Christian
Association started up in town he was on board and raised more
money than everyone else," said
KNOX. "when the Classic Aircraft
Foundation got rolling, because of his flying experience in the
Second World War, he rolled up his sleeves and got involved in that."
Although he dropped out of high school in Grade 11 to join the
army, he more than made up for it later. In 1945 he signed up
for the 'cram' courses at the Department of Veterans' Affairs
and finished high school in seven months. He went on to graduate
from Western University with an honours degree in history then
to the Ontario College of Education at the University of Toronto.
Along with Burlington, he taught in Dundalk and was principal
and teacher in the northern Inuit community of Bear Lake.
"He had an academic side to him and he had a very practical side
to him," said
KNOX.
The funeral was held last Saturday at All Saints' Anglican Church
in Collingwood. He is survived by his wife, Muriel, sons Russell
and his wife Jeanette, Robert and Scott and his wife Adrenne,
along with five grandchildren.
