MALONEY
By Patricia
MALONEY,
Monday,
May 16, 2005, Page A14
Husband, father, story teller, Catholic, machine shop inspector.
Born April 11, 1922, in Mt. St. Patrick, Ontario Died January
21 in Ottawa, after a heart attack, aged 82.
Family and religion were the cornerstones of Jim's life. He also
loved to tell stories about growing up on the farm. This was
the same farm Jim's grandfather homesteaded when he emigrated
from Ireland during the potato famine. The rocky hills Jim called
home would eventually be named after his family, Maloney's Mountain,
near Mt. St. Patrick, Ontario Jim's parents Margaret, a school
teacher, and John, a farmer, raised nine children here, without
indoor plumbing, electricity or a telephone. Bartering when cash
was tight was common. Once my grandfather purchased a 1937 Ford
for $125 and 100 cords of maple wood.
We all loved to listen to Jim's stories of the farm. He remembered
every detail and we often heard the same story many times. One
of his favourites was when he was still in primary school. On
a Friday, Jim pushed Wilbert
LYNN off his seat, breaking the
cast-iron pedestal in the process. Sister Bernadette told Jim
to tell Father
HARRINGTON what he had done. Jim knew he was in
trouble. Father said, "Your dad is going to have to pay for that
seat." To make matters worse, Father said "Don't tell your dad
because I'll tell him Sunday at Massachusetts."
Jim had the worst weekend of his life. On Sunday, he went with
his brother Mike to play down near the water. Jim's dad came
home from church, but didn't say anything to Jim. On Monday,
Jim asked Father what his dad had said about the broken pedestal.
But the priest hadn't told his dad.
Stunned, Jim asked "But who is going to pay for it?" Father said,
"Oh I will, but I guess you had a pretty rough weekend, English Jimmy?"
Jim married Elaine
BROUSSEAU in 1945 in Ottawa. By 1953 they
had three children but were still living in an apartment. Jim
wanted desperately to own his own home for his growing family
but he couldn't afford to.
Then he heard about an opportunity to build one. The only catch
was, he had to help build 16 of them. So the family moved to
Hull, Quebec, where Jim joined a co-op of men who built homes
in the evening and still worked their day jobs. Two years later,
Jim and Elaine owned their very own home where they had three
more children.
Jim suffered bipolar disorder most of his adult life and was
forced to retire at the age of 49 from his job in the federal
public service.
When he was feeling down he would go to bed in his day clothes.
The way Jim explained it, when you feel that awful, you don't
want to have to get dressed in the morning. But when Jim was
feeling good, he was back to story-telling, making buns (which
he learned from his mother), tending his garden or working with
his church.
In 2001 Jim lost Elaine to cancer, was forced to sell his home
in Kemptville, Ontario, where they now lived, and move into a
nursing home. Jim lost most of his personal freedoms but still
enjoyed frequent visits from his children and grandchildren.
Going to Mass on Sunday was important to Jim and his children
took turns taking him.
Jim's sense of humour never wavered. I used to take him to Tim
Horton's every Monday for a coffee and doughnut. When we passed
the nursing station he always joked to the nurse on duty, "If
I don't come back I'll write."
He missed Elaine terribly. Always deeply religious in his Catholic
faith, Jim was sure he would be with her again in Heaven. I can
hear him now, telling her stories about growing up on the farm.
Pat MALONEY is Jim's daughter.
