Sault man killed in hit and run on Walpole Island
By Marissa
NELSON and Jonathan
SHER,
Free
Press reporters
A man walking along a road on Walpole Island was killed early
yesterday when he was struck by a van whose occupants got out
after the collision, then drove away, police say. Elvis
SWANSON,
37, of the Sault Ste. Marie area, was pronounced dead at the
scene of the hit and run, Lambton Ontario Provincial Police said.
A 22-year-old Walpole Island woman has been charged with criminal
negligence causing death and failing to remain at the scene of
a collision.
She was being held in custody yesterday awaiting a bail hearing.
The woman was arrested after she told Walpole Island police the
van had been stolen, a claim that proved false, police said.
witnesses: told police they saw at least four people get out of
the silver van after the crash, then get back in before the van
took off.
"They got out and realized what happened, then sped away," Lambton
Ontario
Provincial
Police Const. John
REURINK said.
SWANSON was walking on Altiman Road, near South Creek Road, when
he was hit just before 2 a.m., police said.
There are no sidewalks on the rural road.
A van matching the description of the one that hit
SWANSON was
found in a cornfield five kilometres away.
Forensic investigators are doing tests on the van,
REURINK said.
Walpole Island police have enlisted the help of Lambton Ontario
Provincial Police, Ontario Provincial Police technical traffic
collision investigators and the forensic identification unit.
Last year, Lambton County racked up 21 traffic deaths, up from
the usual 13 to 15 a year.
"Last year, it was bad,"
REURINK said. "It was a spike, but most
could be attributed to driver error, alcohol or drug use. It
was one of those years."
REURINK said despite yesterday's tragedy, he hopes the pattern
doesn't repeat itself in 2005.

FROST,
Richard
Matthew
After a courageous battle with cancer, it is with great sadness,
that we announce the passing of Richard Matthew
FROST at Princess
Margaret Hospital on June 28, 2005. Matthew was the beloved husband
of Lorena
(SWANSON,) cherished
son of Richard and Nancy, dear
brother of Jonathan and Carolyn (Jeff). Matthew was born in Hamilton,
but spent most of his youthful years in Brampton. In 1989 he
moved with his family to Winnipeg, where he attended Kelvin High
School followed by graduation from University of Manitoba in
1994 (Political Studies) and 1998 (Recreation Studies). Matthew
loved sports in any form. Throughout his life, he played hockey,
baseball, golf, football and swam competitively. Always a passionate
sports fan, he spent his professional life doing what he loved
best - working first for the Manitoba Moose and then for the
Toronto Maple Leafs. Matthew was full of dreams and aspirations
with plans to ultimately build a career in sports journalism.
He also took great pride in his wife Lorena and was able to celebrate
the completion of her requirements for the C.M.A. designation
a few days before he died. In the words of his brother, Matt's
life was filled with love, success and the companionship of great
Friends. It's not the story that's sad, just the ending. Matthew
will be missed by his grandfather and wife, Walter and Helen
ALLUM and his grandmother, Agnes
FROST.
Matthew was loved by
his many aunts, uncles and cousins, particularly, Ryan and Sean
JACKSON.
Matthew was predeceased by his grandfather, Lorne

We thank our family, many Friends, and Matt's colleagues for
their support over the past 5 months. We want to also acknowledge
the effort by the medical professionals at Princess Margaret
Hospital. The funeral service will be held at Knox Presbyterian
Church in Dundas on Thursday, June 30 - visiting beginning at

Many will mourn the passing of someone who served his community
with generosity, both professionally and as a volunteer. A respected
anaesthetist at the Peterborough hospitals for over 45 years,
medicine was Jim's life passion. His enquiring mind led him to
study and apply acupuncture as part of his practice of pain management.
Jim was a generous patron of the arts in Peterborough, an avid
bird watcher and prolific rug hooker. Some of his happiest times
were putting a fussy baby to sleep with his warmth and calm or
helping out in someone's kitchen. A memorial service will be
held at Murray Street Baptist Church, 175 Murray Street, Peterborough
on Saturday, September 10, 2005 at 2 p.m. with visitation one
hour prior. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Peterborough
Regional Health Centre Foundation would be appreciated by his
family. Written notes of condolence should be forwarded to the
family c/o 8 Princeton Road, Toronto, Ontario, M8X 2E2. Arrangements
entrusted to Comstock Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 356 Rubidge
Street, Peterborough, 705-745-4683.

Special thanks to Louise

RUDOLPH for their visits and kindness, over the
years. Manuel and Sandy who brought such happiness to her sister
Blossom and herself, your visits and calls brightened her days.
Thank you also to her Friends and neighbours in San Diego. I
know that you were all sad to see her leave San Diego last summer,
she was just as sad to leave and give up her home and happy memories
there. Thank you to the doctors and nurses in the emergency department
and those on the 12th floor of Mount Sinai Hospital for your
kindness (Sunday April 10, 2005 to Thursday April 14, 2005.)
Mavis' father was a fireman for the city of Toronto and she seemed
to meet firemen wherever she went and at the end it was firemen
who carried her to the ambulance that took her to the hospital.
She felt comfort in that it was like her father was carrying
her as he had so many times when she was a sick child. So, to
those gentlemen and the paramedics - thank you. Before her marriage
Mavis worked for the Steel Company of Canada to aid the war effort
and was a long distance operator for Bell Canada. Mavis was a
stay at home Mom, who always put her family first. She had a
beautiful voice and loved to sing, especially to her family.
Mavis was a kind and caring person who helped everyone in any
way she could. She had a gift for writing beautiful letters to
people to ease their sorrows or brighten their days. Many young
people have called her Mom over the years. We are comforted in
our sorrow knowing that she is with her beloved Harry and family.
She will be missed by family and Friends who knew and loved her.
As per her wishes there will be no funeral service. The cremated
remains of Harry and Mavis will be laid to rest together in Riverside
Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Those
wishing to, may make donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation
or the Cancer Society.

DESANTIS,
Gloria
Ann (née
SWARTMAN) (1936-2005)
At the age of 69 years, Gloria joined her mother Margaret, father
Eldon, and brother Gary into Glory on Saturday, October 22, 2005
at the Sarcee Hospice in Calgary, Alberta. Born on March 7, 1936,
Gloria grew up on Bleeker Street in Toronto with her brothers
Norm, Ron and Gary. This home was full of a whole lot of fun
and love. The Swartman residence was the place to be for the
kids in the neighbourhood, always enough room for one more at
dinner. As Gloria grew into a stunning young lady, she began
an exciting social life; she loved to dance, sing, and enjoy
the resort life at the lakes in Northern Ontario. During Gloria's
travels in the fifties she had many adventures, created lifelong
memories and met a group of Friends that would remain throughout
her life. Gloria worked as a Receptionist for much of her life,
but for quite a few years worked in Classified Sales for the
Mirror (Scarborough) with a group of amazing women. Gloria moved
to Calgary in 1993. She continued her passion for the outdoors
frequently hiking and camping in the mountains. She began a new
career with
ING
Insurance and retired in 2001. Gloria is survived
by her son Carl; his wife Beverley; and their daughters, Brittany,
and Maddison. Her youngest son Larry lives in Sunderland, Ontario
with Kim and their sons, Kyle, Tyler, and Adam. Gloria will also
be missed by her extended family, Wendy Ayres, Morgan, and Wade.
Gloria's family gave her the most pleasure; to watch them succeed,
excel and enjoy life gave her the greatest joy. Gloria was a
pillar for her family; providing them with unconditional love,
pride and support. When her grandchildren competed in any event,
Gloria always attended and was their "Number One Fan." Gloria
will be laid to rest with her mother and brother in a private
ceremony at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto, on Wednesday,
October 26, 2005 at 1: 00 p.m. If Friends so desire, memorial
tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society,
or to the Salvation Army. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com
