BLUGER,
Marianne -- I Remember
By Allan SHIPLEY,
Saturday,
December 3, 2005 Page, S11
Toronto -- Allan
SHIPLEY of Toronto writes about Marianne
BLUGER,
whose obituary appeared on November 25.
Marianne was my friend since we were philosophy students at McGill
University in Montreal more than 40 years ago. I have never known
another person like her. Marianne's quest for truth was not just
an intellectual exercise but a life to be lived. Equally, she
loved the beauty of nature and of the human soul. In poetry,
she found a public way to share her passion for truth and her
compassion for others. But she also shared in very personal and
direct ways.
When she and her two children were living in poverty she insisted
on giving her grandmother's brass candlestick to us as a wedding
present. Later, she would often mark special occasions with the
gift of a poem.
But the greatest gift she gave us was herself. Too ill to attend
the launch of The Eternities, a collection of deeply personal
poems, she asked my wife Jocelyn and me, along with Professor
Margo SWISS and Reverend Roland
KAWANO, to appear and read on her
behalf. By entrusting these poems to us, she placed her innermost
self in our hands. An early morning e-mail alerted us that the
end was near. The reading of each poem felt as if it were a eulogy.
Afterward, we learned she had died just three hours before we
read her words.
One of her last wishes was to tell her Friends that they were
the most important thing in her life. We hope she knew that for
her Friends, she was as important to them as they were to her.

Cancer patient and father of two dies at 29 after months of battling
eviction
By Timothy
APPLEBY,
Wednesday,
October 5, 2005, Page A13
A 29-year-old Toronto cancer patient whose battle against eviction
stirred a wide response from Globe and Mail readers this summer
died Monday night in Sunnybrook hospital.
A tow-truck driver until testicular cancer struck a year ago,
Tim ELLISON had been weakened by a bout of pneumonia, said his
long-time friend, Jodi
LUCK, who set up a trust fund for the
many donations that were made. Other help came in the form of
offers of accommodation.
With no savings and few resources beyond a monthly disability
cheque for $959, Mr.
ELLISON lived in a rundown Keele Street
apartment from which his Thornhill landlady, Marsha
SWITZER,
had tried to evict him for failure to pay rent.
A father of two young children, Mr.
ELLISON could barely walk
and spent his last days on a regime of chemotherapy and morphine.
Home nurses visited to bathe him, clean the intravenous apparatus
attached to his chest and provide other care.
He was "overwhelmed" by the public response to a story in July
outlining his plight, Ms.
LUCK said yesterday.
"He would want everybody thanked. He was unbelievable right up
to the end," she said. "I would never have thought a young guy
like him could have faced up to something like this without whining
about it. But he never did."
