WHELAN, Francis " Budd" (April 18, 1931-October 9, 2005)
Sportsman, athlete, artisan, naturalist, and raconteur extraordinaire. After a valiant battle with cancer fought with dignity and strength, Budd passed away at home surrounded by his loved ones. Survived by Rita, his wife, best friend and rock of 53 years, devoted father and pal to Wendy, Randy (Michelle), Karin (Harry), and Arlene (Tony), cherished Poppa of John, Tyler, Nikki, Cassidy, Chris, and Jacques, son-in-law of Elizabeth DAWSON, brother to June (Art), Joe (Audrey), George (Faith), and Ruth (Gary), brother-in-law of Anne (Bill), Bette (John), Barbara (Cal), Alan (Margaret), Alec (Martha), Tommy (Wilma), Irene (Bobby), and Alexis (Daryl). The Whelan Family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. ATTALLA, Dr. THORNLOE, Dr. GAPSKI, the 4th floor staff at Trillium Health Centre and Budd's special caregivers, Linda, Gerda and Lonia for their kindness, compassion and professionalism. Until the end, Budd kept his trademark sense of humour and wit, which will be missed by all. Del was a kind and gentle man who lived his life with honesty and integrity, grit, insight and quiet reflection, and with optimism. Even in his later years while dealing with cancer, he lived his life with hope. The family will receive relatives and Friends at Christ Church, Newbury on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The Funeral Service will be celebrated at Christ Church on Wednesday, March 16 at 1: 30 p.m. Reverend Christine CRAWFORD officiating. Mac was a former Tool and Die Maker with Waltec Engineering and was an avid fisherman, gardener, hunter and world traveller. He was the son of the late Violet (McINTYRE) and Basil FURTAH. Beloved husband of Connie (Eve). Loving father and father-in-law of Ellen and Leigh THORNTON, Cheryl and Neil FRALEIGH and April and Paul COUNTRYMAN. Dear grandfather of Jennifer, Aaron, Brooke, Paul, Amy, Nathan, Stephanie, MacKenzie and Bailey. Great grandfather of 10 and brother of the late Bill. Peacefully, with his loving family by his side, June 28, 2005, Steve LAUR lost his courageous battle with cancer at the age of 63. Loving husband of 44 years to Betty Anne (THORNTON) LAUR. Devoted father of Michael and Debbie LAUR and Stephanie and Darcy GRANT. Cherished psychotic grandfather of Lindsay, Emily, Alyssa and Cassie. Survived by his mother Grace LAUR, his sister Jennifer and husband Ed, his brothers Ross and wife Linda, Dave and wife Marg, and Dale and wife Diane, and by his mother-in-law Marguerite THORNTON. Predeceased by his sister Donna Jean WARNER, his father Leonard LAUR, and his father-in-law Tom THORNTON.
Steve also had many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews, but will be especially missed by nieces Janis THOM and Deb HOLLAND and their families. Steve will be fondly remembered by all the staff and patrons of Bowl-A-Rama including all his Friends in the Hot Shots. Steve was also involved in the London Block Parent and Neighbourhood Watch and will be missed by many. Thank-you to the attentive staff at Victoria Hospital for their support. A special thanks to Dr. Joseph CHIN and Dr. Lucy PEZZUTO for their ongoing care over the years. Dear brother of Phyllis BRIDGER (Alfred) of England, David SMITH (Brenda) of England and the late Ozzie SMITH. Loved grandfather of Krista HARTLEY and partner Curtis SALTZBERRY of Fort Erie, Adrian HARTLEY of Trenton, Kimberley SMITH of England, and Michael and Becky SMITH of Monkstown, North Ireland. Herb was born in Deal, Kent, England on Ferbruary 24, 1926, the son of the late Samuel and Dorothy (AXON) SMITH. He worked as a welder, millright and after retiring worked at Zehr's. Herb served in the British Royal Navy (World War 2 veteran) and was a member of the Branch 41 of the Royal Canadian Legion, Elgin Regiment (Band member) and the Royal Navy Club, Deal, Kent, England. He maintained the veterans section of South Park Cemetery and received a civic award from the City of Saint Thomas for his effort. He was born on April 8, 1921, the son of the late William Alexander and Rose THORPE of Saint Thomas. Predeceased by 3 siblings in their childhood. Loved husband of 62 years of Virginia Ruth (THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON) and dear father of Dr. William (Jennie CARSWELL) of Saint Thomas, Timothy (Susan) of Calgary, Anthony (Rita) of St. Catharines and Dr. John (Elaine) of Simcoe. Loving grandfather of Emma, Heather, Joelle, Robert, Jennifer, Julia, Danielle, Erica, Adrienne, Patrick and Gillian, as well as 3 great grandchildren. Bill graduated from Saint Thomas Collegiate Institute and then attended McMaster University. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War 2 overseas and in the Canadian Arctic. After the War he joined Bell Telephone Company of Canada and retired after 36 years of service in successively higher management positions in London, Montreal, St. Catharines, Hamilton and Toronto. He was a devoted member of the Anglican Church and served as Church Warden at Trinity in Saint Thomas, Saint Martin-in-the-Fields in London, Grace Anglican in St. Catharines and the Acension Anglican Church in Hamilton. Passed away peacefully at her home, overlooking the Bay of Quinte in Belleville, on Wednesday, March 2, 2005, age 85 years. Ruby HUNTER, formerly of Lake Rosseau, loving wife of Gordon K. HUNTER, for 44 years. Dear mother of Rita Margaret Ellen HUNTER and Rosalyn Leslie HUNTER both of Toronto. Predeceased by her brothers, Frank, Jack and her infant brother Billie. Dear aunt of Gary COLBERT of Toronto, Gail JOHNSON of Burlington, Sharon THORPE of Beaverton and Colleen KOZARK of Hawkestone. Ruby will be sadly missed by her family, relatives and Friends, and all who experienced her vibrant personality, tenderness, understanding, humour, compassion and her love life. Peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at the age of 56. Loving husband of Margaret (née WILSON.) Dear father of Damien of Ottawa, Stuart and his fiance Leanne, Naomi MacKIN all of Edmonton, Pamela KENNEDY, Victoria CULHAM (David) all of Guelph, Laura KENNEDY and her friend Steve KOHLSMITH of Kitchener. James will be sadly missed by his Grandchildren Emilee and Georgia GILBERT, and Alexandria, Madelyn and Ethan CULHAM, as well as his brother Michael (Cathy) of Scotland and his sisters Frances ACAR (William) in Ohio, Dorothy MacDONALD (Donald) of Scotland, and Marian PAGE (Raymond) of Scotland. James was predeceased by his sister Margaret THORPE (2003) and her husband Vernon (2001) and his mother-in-law Agnes (Nessie) WILSON (2001.) James was president and Chief Executive Officer of B.T.R. Metzler Automotive and had his M.B.A. from Western in 2000 "Millennium Men" and was also the Campaign chairperson for the United Way in Oakville, Welland, Ontario and Reidsville, North Carolina, James was also a Sponsor and Mentor of the Richard Ivy School of Business, Western University, E.M.B.A. and was awarded the Corporate Citizen of the year by the Reidsville, North Carolina Chamber of Commerce in 1999. He was the owner of Color Your World on Hespeler Road, Cambridge. At James request, cremation has taken place. THORPE, William Robert
of London and formerly of Saint Thomas, at the Victoria Hospital, London, on August 27, 2005, following complications from a fractured hip. He was born on April 8, 1921, the son of the late William Alexander and Rose THORPE of Saint Thomas. Predeceased by 3 siblings in their childhood. Loved husband of 62 years of Virginia Ruth (THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON) and dear father of Dr. William (Jennie CARSWELL) of Saint Thomas, Timothy (Susan) of Calgary, Anthony (Rita) of St. Catharines and Dr. John (Elaine) of Simcoe. Loving grandfather of Emma, Heather, Joelle, Robert, Jennifer, Julia, Danielle, Erica, Adrienne, Patrick and Gillian, as well as 3 great grandchildren. Bill graduated from Saint Thomas Collegiate Institute and then attended McMaster University. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War 2 overseas and in the Canadian Arctic. After the War he joined Bell Telephone Company of Canada and retired after 36 years of service in successively higher management positions in London, Montreal, St. Catharines, Hamilton and Toronto. He was a devoted member of the Anglican Church and served as Church Warden at Trinity in Saint Thomas, Saint Martin-in-the-Fields in London, Grace Anglican in St. Catharines and the Acension Anglican Church in Hamilton. The family will receive Friends at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin Street, Saint Thomas on Tuesday from 2: 30 to 4:30 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service to be held at Trinity Anglican Church on Wednesday at 2: 00 p.m. Cremation has taken place with private interment of the ashes. Originally from Trinidad; recently retired from the Durham Board of Education as a Special Ed and Kindergarten Teacher. Peacefully and with great dignity, passed away at the Rouge Valley Health System, Ajax on April 16, 2005, surrounded by her loving family members. Bernice is survived by her mother, Marie POPE (of Trinidad) her children, Allison and John; 8 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and 3 brothers. She will be dearly missed by her beloved companion Paul KATSORAS. She is predeceased by her father Samuel POPE and her husband Milton THORPE. Passed away in Burnaby, British Columbia on May 22, 2005 at the age of 68. He was born in Toronto on October 21, 1936. Tom was predeceased by his father Isaac Thomas WHITEHOUSE, his mother Nellie Sarah PARKER and his sister Margaret Helen THORPE. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years Leone, his son Randall Alan, daughter Christine Leigh and his grand_sons Benjamin and Wil. Graduated from Ryerson Institute in 1957 with a degree in Metallurgical Technology. Tom was a long term employee of Microtel and Telus. At Tom's request there will be no service. Peacefully with her children by her side on Tuesday, September 13, 2005 at the William Osler Health Centre, Etobicoke at the age of 71. Suzanne was the loving mother of Sandra McCULLOCH and Stephen McCULLOCH and his wife Jill. Devoted and affectionate grandmother to Madison, Luke and Bryn McCULLOCH and Connor and Teagon SINGLETON, who will have so many great memories of the funthey had together. Sue will be sorely missed by her sister Nancy ANDERSON and her husband Ken.
