TURCHYN,
Pete -- Dispatch
By Oliver MOORE,
Saturday,
October 29, 2005, Page M6
The sweet lure of old-style candy at Pete
TURCHYN's corner store
near High Park pulled in generations of school kids, many of
whom grew into parents bringing their own children to the shop.
Mr. TURCHYN, a tailor in his native Ukraine, stood daily behind
the counter at Sunny Bar as thousands of kids from the four nearby
schools came in before, during and after their classes.
Teachers came, too, says his daughter Sonia, and they particularly
appreciated that he kept the shop open during strikes that drove
the student body away.
"He wanted a business of his own," his daughter said. "He saw
the attraction of all the schools there and he tried it out as
a candy store/snack bar-type restaurant."
The gamble paid off, but very long workweeks became a fixture
of Mr. TURCHYN's life. He worked behind the counter on Annette
Street for 45 years, and he was routinely on the job 12 hours
a day, six days a week.
"He didn't want to do anything else -- that's why he didn't want
to give it up," Ms.
TURCHYN said. "He saw over four generations
[grow up]." And Mr.
TURCHYN's personal touch fit the neighbourhood
well, she says. "It's a very old-fashioned... close area where
you learn [neighbours] by name."
Mr. TURCHYN worked until a stroke put limits on what he could
do. By then, he was being helped increasingly by Sonia, who had
been drawn back into the family business where she'd spent her
childhood.
"He did have a sweet tooth," Ms.
TURCHYN said. "He was like me
we'd try everything before we'd bring it in."
Sonia took over the business five years ago and has tried to
keep it as retro as possible, true to the vision her father brought
to the store. "It's like a time warp in there," she said.
Mr. TURCHYN died on October 6 at age 85. He is survived by his
wife, Mary, and daughters Sonia and Darlene.
