ROBINSON,
Edna -- I Remember
By Rob WEST,
Monday,
December 12, 2005, Page S11
Rob WEST of Toronto writes about Edna
ROBINSON, whose obituary
appeared on December 7.
On Sunday, December 4., I finally realized a lifelong dream to
purchase my very own pair of Nokia rubber boots, the Finnish
version of the legendary British long boots commonly known as
Wellingtons.
Three days later, I found myself reminiscing about Edna
ROBINSON,
who had died three weeks earlier at the age of 89. My memory
was of 1966, and the outgoing principal of Lord Nelson High School
in Burlington, Ontario, one "Miss
ROBINSON" (it wasn't until
much later that I learned teachers, never mind principals, possessed
first names) was addressing the incoming Grade 9 class on what
to expect during their first year of high school. Being all of
13, and in the company of my very English mother, I was awed.
Miss ROBINSON, who counselled students on many matters of importance,
including dress and deportment, cautioned the assembled against
inappropriate attire, which could lead impressionable youngsters
to who knows what. She specifically mentioned "Wellingtons" as
unseemly.
Well, Miss
ROBINSON, I never did wear Wellingtons at high school,
and I thank you for that sage advice (as well as the bit about
studying hard). Now that I am 53, I have made many mistakes in
my life, so I hope and trust that you will forgive my long-postponed
youthful indiscretion of purchasing a brand new pair of Finnish
Wellingtons.

A man was shot inside his posh Vaughan home yesterday and later

treating it as a break-and-enter or home invasion-type incident."
West refused to identify the victim, saying relatives hadn't
been notified. An autopsy is to be performed today. Police weren't
sure how many shots had been fired or had hit the victim, who
was believed to be alone at the time, West said.
One neighbour identified the home's owner as Carlo DI
MATTEO,
and another said a family of five, including three children,
lived in the home. The family has lived there for at least five
years, neighbours said.
The stylish two-storey home, with a swimming pool and stone driveway,
was cordoned off as officers searched for clues.
"It's too early in the investigation to tell whether this specific
house was targeted or whether this was a random act,"
WEST said.
"Typically in a home invasion-type robbery people go there for
a sole purpose."
WEST said neighbours apparently didn't see or hear anything.
In the 911 call, the victim did not relay any information about
the assailant.
WEST would not say if anything was taken from the home.
A neighbour said they often saw the father playing with his teen
daughter and two younger sons out in the street.
York Region officers were investigating another suspicious death
yesterday, but refused to rule it a homicide until an autopsy
has been done. A man collapsed in the driveway of the Pinecrest
Motel on Highway 7 and died later in hospital.
WEST would not
give details.

Deadly robbery caught on tape
By Morgan CAMPBELL,
Staff
Reporter
After three weeks of investigation, York Region police have narrowed
their search for a Woodbridge man's killers to three men seen
on a surveillance camera near his home.
Carlo DIMATTEO, 45, was shot to death on June 24 during an attempted
robbery at his house on Cipriano Ct., near Highway 27 and Rutherford
Rd.
About half an hour before the shooting, a security camera on
a neighbour's home photographed three men and their car, a black
1996 or 1997 two-door Volkswagen Golf with no sunroof.
Police released the photos yesterday in the hope they'll lead
to arrests.
"We will apprehend these people because there are only so many
Volkswagen Golfs. If we have to interview each person that owns
a Volkswagen Golf in the Greater Toronto Area, we will. It's
just a matter of time," said Det. Sgt. Bruce
WEST of the homicide
bureau.
"If the people involved want to contact the homicide bureau we'll
be more than willing to talk to them," he said.
WEST said
DIMATTEO was shot when the robbery went awry.
"Traditionally, people do home invasions for a specific reason,
to steal money or cash," he said. "So in that sense
(DIMATTEO)
wasn't targeted for a murder, but he was certainly targeted for
a home invasion."
DIMATTEO worked at the Brampton Chrysler plant.
He lived with his wife and three children in a two-storey home
in a Woodbridge neighbourhood where some homes are worth more
than $1 million.
WEST said
DIMATTEO wasn't known to police.
DIMATTEO was home alone when the break-in occurred about 9: 30
a.m.
At 10 a.m., shortly after he was shot, he made a 911 call to
report he had been injured in a robbery. Paramedics treated him
at the scene, then took him to Sunnybrook and Women's Health Sciences
Centre, where he died at about 11: 30 a.m.
Police are asking anyone with information on
DIMATTEO's shooting
to call 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7865, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
The slaying was York region's third homicide this year, and the
second shooting death in Woodbridge involving a victim who had
ties to Brampton.
