On April 29th, 2005 at Royal Victoria Hospital, in his 83rd year, after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. Beloved husband of Mary FAY and the late Jacqueline, dear father of Cheryl Ann LIVINGSTONE of West Vancouver, and Glenn Malcolm Thomas MacDONALD of St. Louis, Missouri, grandchildren Scott David LIVINGSTONE, Kelly Jacqueline JAMES, Brock Malcolm MacDONALD, and Leigh Jacqueline MacDONALD, great-granddaughter Ivy LIVINGSTONE, and sisters Margaret WESTERN and Dolores GOODMAN. He will be missed by his extended family, June, Peter, Michael, and Jennifer, who thought of Don as their own special father and grandfather. After a career with General Motors, Don was active in retirement in local organizations in London and Barrie. Working at a Flin Flon radio station, Manitoban George SALVERSON announced the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, one incident from a lifetime in broadcasting and the arts.
"It's certainly a story he talked about," said Mr. SALVERSON's daughter, Julie, a drama professor at Queen's University. "He was actually quite proud to be a part of it, even if he'd say it was just another day at work."
She said he got his first radio job because his mother, Laura Goodman SALVERSON, was an accomplished writer, and such proximity to talent put him ahead of other applicants.
He moved to Toronto in the late 1940s because, a long-time friend said, that was the place to go. Murray WESTGATE, who knew Mr. SALVERSON for decades, said he fell in with a group of people from back home. By then, he had already written his first radio scripts.
"He was one of the Winnipeg crowd, and we westerners stuck together," Mr. WESTGATE said.
Mr. WESTGATE, who worked as an actor and did some advertising work, said he had played the lead in several "very good" scripts Mr. SALVERSON had written.
Mr. SALVERSON dreamed up and wrote dozens of series while working for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. He also created television plays and a documentary on pollution that resulted in a libel suit by U.S. companies claiming they were not fouling the air.
He was actually quite shy, his daughter said, but because of his job he learned to be a good listener and could converse with anyone.
Predeceased by his wife, Sandra SCOTT, Mr. SALVERSON spent his last years living at the Performing Arts Lodge in Toronto. He passed away in April. He leaves his daughter and his son, Scott, a blacksmith in the Peterborough area.

On Saturday, December 3 at Central Park Lodge Westside in Etobicoke, at the age of 79, after a long illness. Beloved wife of 55 years of John, sister of Richard LESTER of West Vancouver, dearly loved mother of Patrick of Kinderhook, New York Christopher of Regina, and Ann of Toronto, and grandmother of Katie and Jessie of Regina. Sister-in-law to the late Janet BRAIDE, and to Florence KRISTJANSON and Lillian P. DYSON- BABCOCK. Mother-in-law to Dana SPOT and John WESTHEUSER. Among Sheila's ancestors are John Pritchard (one of the original settlers of Rupert's Land, an area encompassing most of what later became Western Canada), Egerton Ryerson, a United Empire Loyalist and a leading figure in 19th-century Ontario education and politics, and Elizabeth Matheson, one of the first female doctors in Canada. Sheila lived a full and active life, and made many contributions to her community. Born in Toronto on November 29, 1926, and raised in that city, she attended Oakwood Collegiate and graduated from Trinity College at the University of Toronto in 1948. She married John Davison HARBRON on September 20, 1950 and devoted much of her energies over the next three decades to being a devoted wife and mother. She was the first social convener of the newly founded Victoria Symphony Orchestra in 1952, and was a scriptwriter for radio station CJVI in Victoria in 1952-53. The couple moved to Toronto in 1953. In the early 1970s, while still raising her family, Sheila began working as a substitute teacher. She returned to university part-time and earned her B.Ed. from the University of Toronto in 1976, and spent the next 20 years as a much-in-demand substitute teacher at Etobicoke high schools. Sheila was president of the Etobicoke branch of the Canadian Federation of University Women in 1966-67, and president of the Governor Simcoe branch of the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada from 1989-92. She was a member of the Ryerse-Ryerson Family Association, produced a family tree of Ryerson descendants in 1983, and was given a Volunteer Service Award by the government of Ontario in 1998 for her work with the United Empire Loyalists. Sheila was also an active member of St. George's Church-on-the Hill in Etobicoke, including serving as editor of the church newsletter The Lance from 1989-92. Sheila will be profoundly missed by her family and her many lifelong Friends. The family would like to convey their deepest gratitude to Sheila's caregivers and to Dr. Sam GREENSPAN at Central Park Lodge Westside, and all who have supported us through her long illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Toronto. The memorial and celebration of Sheila's life will be held at St. George's Church on-the-Hill on Thursday. Suddenly, after a brief battle with cancer, at her home, in Owen Sound, on Friday, February 18th, 2005. Loving mother of Paula BALDWIN, of Midland; Leslie WESTLAKE, of Mississauga and Lynne and her husband, Giovanni CORRIAS, of Rome, Italy. Loving grandmother of Belynda, Stephen, Laura, Joanna, Jamie, Ryan and Lauren. Great-grandmother of Brandon, Neilee, Colden, Mackena, Matthew, Mica, Eric, Gwen (Little Pauline) and Krista. Predeceased by her parents, Dot and James BUZZA (Buzza Brothers Jewellers) and her brother, Roy. Pauline volunteered with Meals on Wheels and in the hospital at the Book Cart and the Gift Shop. In 2004, she received an Honorary Award for 20 years of service. An avid bridge player, she will be remembered by Baker Street and also the Owen Sound Golf and Country Club. The city of Rome and many of it's residents will miss her annual visits. SMITH, Dorothy Burrard (née WESTLAKE)
Slipped away peacefully on Christmas Day. Dorothy was born 15 January, 1919 in Taber, Alberta, the younger daughter of Lionel Trelawney and Margaret Agar WESTLAKE. She attended the University of British Columbia, graduating in 1941. She met her husband, David Burrard SMITH, there and in 1942, they married in Ottawa. In their almost 64 years together, they lived in Ajax, Ottawa, Rome, London, Lobo and finally Chelsey Park Retirement Home in London, Ontario. She was the much-loved mother of Stephanie (George BRYANT,) Janet (Fred CHANDLER) and Duncan (Sandra;) grandmother (DeeDee) to Margaret (Dominic STONES,) Jennifer, Susan (Geoffrey GOW,) Eleanor, Darryl and Tamara and great-grandmother to Emily, Gillian and Alexandra. They gave her endless satisfaction, a satisfaction they all returned many-fold. Dorothy worked as a hospital technician in Vancouver, Tranquille, Calgary and Ajax. In 1961, she graduated from Ottawa Teacher's College. She became a dedicated and successful teacher first in the Ottawa area at Bells Corners, Rockcliffe Air Base and Meadowvale, then in London at Orchard Park, St. George, Empress, Victoria, Riverview and Special Education. In retirement, she turned to art and painting and she was an active member of the London Brush and Palette Club. She and David traveled widely. Their rural retirement home in Lobo Township outside London with its woods and pond was a great delight. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 7th, at 3: 00 p.m. at the Unitarian Fellowship of London, 557 Clarke Road, London. Queries can be directed to Stephanie BRYANT (416-762-6039). It is with great sadness, that the family announces the passing of Fred, on Friday, November 11, 2005 in his 70th year. Fred is survived by his loving wife Carole. He will be sadly missed by his son Paul (Scott), as well by his brother Jim (Dolores), and his sister Linda HERON (Bill.) His memory will live on in the hearts of his nieces: Jennine, Margaret and Catherine. Also survived by his aunt Shirley HOPKINS. Predeceased by his parents Alfred OAKLEY and the former Leah WESTLAKE and son Graham.
