Born Nottingham, England, May 5, 1911. Died of old age August 18, 2005 in Red Deer. Alberta. "Peggy" Mary Frances Whitehurst KURATA, beloved daughter of Squire and Eliza WHITEHURST. Worked▼ in personnel at Metropolitan Life in Ottawa in 1927-1947. Served in many volunteer capacities including an early program to provide medical and dental assistance to the eastern Arctic, and became involved with Inuit Art and the Canadian Handicrafts Guild. After her marriage in 1947 to lawyer Lucien C. KURATA, she moved to Toronto and became active in the Royal Ontario Museum and the Royal Ontario Museum's Saturday Morning Club program, sharing her extensive knowledge of Canadian folklore. She also worked tirelessly with the Toronto Japanese Garden Club and Cultural Centre. After her (first) retirement she moved back to Ottawa, working with the National Museum and the National Film Board to document Canadian minorities, including Japanese, Chinese and Jewish peoples. Her second retirement took her to Red Deer, Alberta. Peggy is survived by daughters Elizabeth and Christina and son Luke (Sylvia,) grandchildren, Josh AIKEN, Jude▼ (Crystal▼) AIKEN, Harley▼ and Vincent KURATA, and greatgrandchildren Hero, Juno, Harper Lee and Shaye. WALLNER, Joseph Peter " Joe"
Died peacefully, on March 2, 2005 at Wellington House Nursing Home in Prescott, Ontario, after several years of declining health, in his 88th year. Born April 11, 1917 in Hanover, Ontario, and a long-time resident of Ancaster and Burlington, Joe was known throughout his life as a fine gentleman who championed through his actions his belief in God, family, his country and the credit union movement. Active in credit unions from an early age, Joe joined the staff of CUNA Mutual in 1951 and travelled extensively in Canada, the U.S. and abroad to support the growth and development of credit unions, and insurance services for credit unions. In 1954-1955 he was president of CUNA (Hamilton) Credit Union. He established many lasting Friendships through his business travels, retiring as Senior Vice President, Corporate Relations, for CUMIS in 1982. He also was active in the Burlington Chamber of Commerce, serving as its president in 1976. In World War 2, Joe served first in the Merchant Marine and then more than three years in Ferry Command, delivering planes and equipment across the Atlantic. His patriotism was still evident years later when he organized a door-to-door campaign in Burlington to encourage families to proudly fly their country's flag on Canada Day. Dozens of families took part, including virtually everyone on Joe's street. Joe was a founding member of two Catholic parishes and was a founding director of St. Louis Parish Credit Union, which became Waterloo Regional Credit Union and where he retained membership for more than 50 years. He was a member of Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Burlington for 37 years. The family express their deepest appreciation to Father John APPELMAN and the Pastoral Care Group at Saint Mark's Parish, Prescott, who supported Joe's faith in many kind ways in recent years. Joe's other great faith was in medical practitioners, from whom he received stellar care, particularly in his declining years. The family would especially like to thank the caring and compassionate staff at Wellington House, where he spent his last four years, as well as Dr. Maung Tun ZAW of Burlington and Dr. Gun BHATT of Prescott. Joe was the dear father of John WALLNER (Sheila) of Gatineau, Quebec, and Eloise COLEMAN (Tom) of Toronto and Brockville. He was predeceased by two loving wives: Audrey Mary BENINGER, (1981,) and Margaret WHITELEY, (1992.) He is survived by his sister Salome (Mrs. Dan DACEY) of Thunder Bay, and brother George WALLNER (Phyllis) of Guelph, and was predeceased by three siblings; Sister Mary SALOME, S.S.N.D.; Gertrude (Mrs. James DAVIDSON) of Kenora; and Flight-Sergeant John WALLNER of Hanover, who was shot down in action August 18, 1943, 15 months after serving as Joe and Audrey's best man. He was 23. Peacefully at the North York General Hospital Palliative Care Unit on Thursday, September 8, 2005, in his 85th year. Predeceased by his parents Helen and William McCOMBIE and by his sister Elna and her husband Robert "Mel" WHITESIDE. Loved▲ uncle of Helen (Aarne) JUHOLA and the late Gail DEVINE, and great-uncle of Colin (Brenda,) and their family. Dear friend of Connie SHEPHEARD, her family and, especially, Joel. Special thanks to the nurses and staff at the North York General Hospital Palliative Care Unit. The family will receive Friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home - A.W. Miles Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East) from 7-9 p.m. Friday. Service in the chapel on Saturday, September 10th at one o'clock. Passed away at Toronto on Thursday, September 8, 2005. Beloved son of Glenda RICHARDS (née WHITESIDE) and Scott RICHARDS (predeceased.) He is also lovingly remembered by Evelyn ZUBEK (Godmother▲) and Wayne ZUBEK, Lori NEWMAN (spouse), Joy NEWMAN, Uncle Derek and Aunt Merle RICHARDS and family, Linda DAWE and Ashley ALVERO, Stephen and David KELLEY and family, and Wayne BURNETT. Gareth▲ BENNETT and Cara PIFKO and Eric's bands, the Elastocitizens, My Dear Heretic and Thieves Crossing will cherish the memory of his close Friendship. Thoughtful, generous and kind-hearted, Eric will be missed by all those lives he touched. His sense of humour enabled him to transcend his many physical challenges. Now he is free to soar. Passed away at Stevenson Memorial Hospital Alliston, Ontario on Wednesday, November 23, 2005, in her 78th year. Beloved wife of the late Carl John FLEAR. Loved mother of David FLEAR and his wife Suzanne of Clearwater, British Columbia, Scott FLEAR and his wife Judy of Kaministiquia, Ontario. Loved grandmother of Jackie, Kim, Cory and Jason. Dear sister of Lenore CHAPMAN of Markham, Jack and Sylvia PALMER of St. Catharines. Loved sister-in-law of Margaret and Ross WHITESIDE of Alliston.
