With fondness and sadness the family announces the peaceful passing of Rita Mae WHITEWAY, on September 7, 2005, at St. Joseph's Health Centre. A longtime member of the Anglican Church of the Atonement. Rita was a wonderfully kind, generous and gracious wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Rita was predeceased by her husband Bill, whom she married 63 years ago. Rita was ceaselessly devoted to her family. She leaves to cherish her memory her two sons, Kenneth and Keith, grandchildren Sarah, David, and Kathlene, and great-granddaughter Amelia. She is lovingly remembered by daughter-in-law Suzanne, who has always be regarded by Rita as her daughter, her grand_son-in-law Jason, and brother and sister-in-law Howard and Averil. Following a lifetime filled with music and joy, Merrick died peacefully in Peterborough, Ontario, December 6, 2005, a year after the death of his dear Mary. He will always be loved by his sister, Sheila, and his three children, Linda (David WHITFIELD,) Stephen (Theresa MORRISSEY,) and Kate (John HART.) " Muk▼" was very proud of his eight grandchildren, Lindsay and Andrew WHITFIELD Adam, Michael and Peter JARRETT; and Terry, Martha and Rachel HART. He will also be missed by his nieces and nephews, Brian, Robin, Kim, Andrew and Rob. Merrick JARRETT was a singer of folk songs, piper and yodeller extraordinaire. His mother, Sassa, instilled in him a love of folk music at an early age. He began performing on radio station VORG in Newfoundland, and continued with programs on CKEY, CHUM and CFRB in Toronto, as well as a number of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation radio series. He made a number of recordings, and performed at various folk clubs and festivals, including Mariposa. Thousands of children were introduced to folk music through his concerts in schools and libraries across Canada. For 17 years he taught folk music at Conrad Grebel College, University of Waterloo. Merrick was the recipient of the 2002 Kitchener-Waterloo Arts Award (Music). Passed away in the Golden and District General Hospital, Golden, British Columbia on Wednesday, October 19th, 2005 at the age of 76 years. A private family service will take place on Tuesday, October 25th in North York. Interment of the cremated remains will take place in the family plot of Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto. A public reception will follow at a later date.
Jack was born in Toronto on July 24, 1929 and wintered in Florida and summered in The Muskokas. He was a long-time charter member of the Thornhill Country Club. Jack was a self-employed businessman for many years operating J.C. Currie and Sons before retirement. He was loved and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Jack is survived by his daughter Jean (Jeff) WHITFIELD of Golden son Jim CURRIE of Mactier, Ontario; niece Virginia (Douglas) COUTTS of Toronto; companion and friend Joan MacDOUGAL in Sutton, Ontario and stepson Ian (Anne-Marie) ROBERTSON of Maple, Ontario. A Toronto-area man faces a second-degree murder charge after one man was shot to death and another injured in a pub parking lot early yesterday.
Dwayne PITTER, 23, of Vaughan, was charged yesterday with second-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with London's record 13th homicide.
PITTER is to appear in a London court today.
Joshua Kenneth WILLIAMS, 22, of the London area, was shot in the torso outside the Roxbury Pub and Grill at 1165 Oxford St. E. at 2: 20 a.m.
He died later.
Three people, including PITTER, were taken into custody. The other two were released, police said last night.
Detectives scoured the lot yesterday as they wrestled with a skyrocketing number of homicides this year.
Neighbours said they saw a crowd leave the bar about 2: 30 a.m., then heard screaming.
"I heard the gunshots and I saw someone go down. I thought it was firecrackers," said a woman who was standing outside the Roxbury near a variety store at the time. She did want to give her name.
"I heard two shots and I ran into the (variety) store."
Police said a dispute outside the bar led to the shooting.
Police and paramedics arrived to find WILLIAMS seriously hurt and another man shot in the arm. The second man was treated and released from hospital.
Police have recovered a handgun and are not looking for any more weapons, said Det. Andrew WHITFORD.
It's unclear whether WILLIAMS, the injured man and the three people in custody had just left the Roxbury when the shooting happened, WHITFORD said.
But there were about 40 people in the parking lot when a disagreement broke out, he said. Police are still probing the cause of the dispute.
WHITFORD said many witnesses: have come forward and bar staff have co-operated.
Roxbury staff declined comment yesterday.
Neighbours have complained of fights and loud noise after the bar's closing time.
"It's scary," said Brenda PARSONS, who lives in a nearby townhouse complex. "You don't need television to live in this neighbourhood. There's enough entertainment outside."
PARSONS said she thinks police should patrol the area more regularly on Friday and Saturday nights.
The parking lot is the same one in which Ryan VLAAD, 26, died after being punched in the head during an early morning brawl in July 2002.
Ward 3 Coun. Bernie MacDONALD said he's fielded complaints from neighbours who have had beer bottles thrown at their houses and on their property after 2 a.m. and have heard fights breaking out.
"This has been an ongoing thing with the residents," he said.
The concerns were passed on to police and MacDONALD thought the problems had been quelled until he heard about yesterday's shooting.
But MacDONALD said he thinks drugs are the "root evil" behind violence and shootings in the city this year.
"Until we cut the flow of drugs, we're going to see this and it's going to continue to rise," he said.
Police said they don't know whether drugs were involved in the fatal shooting.
Officers blocked off a large section of the strip mall, which also houses a Sport Mart, Goodwill, variety store, karate school and Tim Hortons.
A green Jeep and a black car also were taped off, though police wouldn't say why.
A shell casing and knife were visible at the scene.
A green camouflage hat, grey T-shirt, plastic beer cups, a cigarette pack and a lighter were strewn near what appeared to be a bloody stain near the black car.
Forensic detectives picked through the evidence and used a fire department aerial truck to photograph and videotape the lot.
An autopsy will be conducted today to determine the cause of death.

- March 30: James BLAIR, 20, was stabbed outside an Oakville Avenue apartment building. Mwangi GETHIGA, 18, is charged with second-degree murder.
- April 22: Wilford BEBEE, 65, was stabbed outside his McNay Street home. His stepson is charged with second-degree murder.
- May 2: An infant was found dead in a home on Four Oaks Crescent. Katherine PECKHAM, 25, is charged with manslaughter.
- June 23: John MARYS, 71, was stabbed in his William Street apartment. Godwin GRIXTI, 53, is charged first-degree murder.
- June 27: Halina CZUBA, 37, her daughter, Julia, 13, and son, Michal, 5, were stabbed in their 682 Princess Ave. home. Frank GREDA, 40, was also found dead in the house from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
- June 28: Yorn MEY was slain in her Chippewa Drive home. Her husband is charged with second-degree murder.
- August 5: Stephen CORMACK, 45, was stabbed after a botched robbery in a Huron Street apartment. Dameon LODGE, 24, is charged with manslaughter.
- September 8: A fight involving two men left Kai ZHENG, 22, dead outside 1128 Adelaide St. N. Geun Chul LEE, 25, is charged with manslaughter.

Passed away peacefully in his 84th year, with his wife at his side, on Wednesday, April 20, 2005 at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. Dearly loved and devoted husband of Doreen (WHITLOCK.) Predeceased by his loving parents Margaret (KELSO) and Kennedy MULHOLLAND of Northern Ireland. Dear brother of the late William MULHOLLAND of Australia. Lovingly remembered by brothers John (Lily), Robert (Kathleen) and Frederick (Olga) of Northern Ireland, Joseph (Nancy) of England, Andrew (Ruth) and Thomas (Elva) of Australia and James (Margaret) of New Zealand. WHITLOCK, Thomas Edward (March 17, 1951-April 24, 2005)
It is with deepest love and sadness that the family announces Tom's passing at the age of 54. Tom passed away in Augusta, Georgia after a six month struggle with cancer, which he handled with great courage and grace. Predeceased by his parents, Jean and Edward WHITLOCK. Beloved▼ husband of Jenny, who was completely devoted to Tom before and throughout his illness. He is loved and deeply missed by sisters Sandy (Brian), Judy, Lynn (Grant), Debra (Janet), Pam, Laurie (Paul), and Paula (Charles). Dear uncle to Randy, Mark, Joanna, Brett, Tim, Jessica, Erica, Tom, Ginny, and Maddy. Lovingly remembered by his Aunt Ethel, his many cousins, Friends, and colleagues. Born in Toronto, Tom was a talented industrial/mechanical designer and accomplished guitarist. He loved horseback riding, collecting classic cars, and The Beatles. Cremation. (Veteran of World War 2 Royal Canadian Air Force, P.O. Squadron No. 417). Passed away peacefully at Sunnybrook Veterans' Ward L on Thursday, October 13, 2005, at age 83. Beloved son of the late Amy CULLY. Much loved and sadly missed by his best friend and companion for 35 years, Mildred. Tim will be greatly missed by his cousin Betty and many other family members and Friends. A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel at Sunnybrook at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 20, 2005 with a reception to follow. Many thanks to all the caring and wonderful doctors, nurses and caregivers who were so kind to Ted, and a special thanks to Chaplain Wes Roberts for all his visits and prayers.
