In memory of a dear father, grandfather and great-grandfather,
Cecil who passed away June 10, 1987 and a dear mother, grandmother
and great-grandmother Florence who passed away August 23, 1998.
They had a sense of humour
And a sparkle in their eye.
A helping hand in times of need,
On that we could rely.
Maybe we can't touch their hands,
Or see their smiling face.
Maybe we can't hear their voice,
Or feel their warm embrace.
But something we will always have,
Tucked safely in our hearts,
Our love for them, their love for us,
Will never let us part
Forever loved and never forgotten, Al and Edna

Figure skater dominated national competition
By Tom HAWTHORN,
Saturday,
January 22, 2005 - Page S7
Victoria -- Sandy
McKECHNIE, who has died aged 83, won five national
figure-skating championships before going off to war.
Mr. McKECHNIE was aged 17 when he claimed the Canadian junior
men's title in a 1939 meet at the Toronto Skating Club.
"Displaying even rhythm in his dance steps and executing the
difficult double-loop, lutz and salchows with perfect precision,
Sandy gave one of the most pleasing performances witnessed on
Toronto ice," wrote Bobbie
ROSENFELD in the Globe and Mail.
Mr. McKECHNIE also skated on the winning fours team that year
with clubmates Gillian
WATSON,
Ruth
HALL and Donald
GILCHRIST.
In 1941, he won a national dance title in tenstep with Norah
McCARTHY.
The following year he won two more Canadian titles
with Eleanor
O'MEARA, claiming the waltz and pairs championships.
His ice partner, who died at age 83 five years ago, became a
star with the Ice Capades, with whom she was known as a "ballerina
of the blades."
The pair joined others in a "South Seas" extravaganza including
500 performers and a 100-piece orchestra at Maple Leaf Gardens
in Toronto in the winter of 1941. He unlaced his skates to join
the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve, serving as a lieutenant
aboard the anti-submarine corvette Algoma.
A sportsman all his life, he was later president of the Toronto
Cricket, Skating and Curling Club.
James Alexander
McKECHNIE was born at Toronto on August 25, 1921.
He moved to Victoria in 1980, where he died at his home on January
9, leaving his wife, Sally; a daughter; and a sister. He was
predeceased by a son.

You would be proud.

My heart still aches to see you
I miss your voice
I miss your laugh
I miss the way you smell
The granddaughter you met only briefly
The grand_son you never did
Are growing into beautiful people
As you knew they would
You would be proud Mom
I will keep good care of our precious little ones
And will teach them all that I know
I will make you proud Mom.

Service for Ian
LANG on Saturday
By Michael
GENNINGS,
The
Connection,
Page
A man who dedicated his life to teaching, public service and
the environment has died.
Clearview Township Ward 3 councillor Ian
LANG, 62, died Monday
afternoon at his home near Dunedin.
"It's very shocking," Clearview Township Mayor Fran
SAINSBURY
said during an interview at the municipal office in Stayner.
"We are all extremely sad for Marjorie and the family."
The mayor said council and municipal staff will do whatever possible
to support
LANG's family.
A sign of compassion was already evident at the township office
Tuesday -- flags were lowered to half~staff
LANG, a seven-year member of council, was remembered fondly by
colleagues and staff.
Chief administrative officer Sue
McKENZIE, who regularly rode
with LANG to and from council meetings, was near tears as she spoke.
"He wasn't just a councillor -- he was a friend. He was an amazing
person, very devoted to the job."
Deputy-Mayor Ken
FERGUSON said he's lost a "friend and good colleague
who's input will he missed."
FERGUSON, who last spoke with
LANG over the phone for about 30
minutes on Friday, said: "while we didn't always agree we respected
each other and that allowed for a good relationship."
Ward 7 councillor Shawn
DAVIDSON called
LANG's death "tragic."
"He was very dedicated, one of our hardest working council members,"
DAVIDSON said.
Former mayor Bob
McKEE, who now lives in Collingwood, said he
was saddened to learn of
LANG's death.
"Of my council Ian was among the top three people we had," said
McKEE.
"He was a real asset to us, giving a lot of his time."
During the last term of council,
LANG oversaw the launch of a
municipal newsletter in order to maintain better communication
with residents.
LANG's passion was the environment, something evident from the
committees and boards he served.
The retired science teacher, who taught for 29 years at North
Collegiate in Barrie, served on the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation
Authority, the Niagara Escarpment Commission, the Clearview Tree
Committee, the Lake Simcoe Nottawasaga River Watersheds Assimilative
Capacity Study and the Blue Mountain Watershed Trust Foundation.
Outside of the environment realm,
LANG was on the. Creemore Medical
Centre Services Board and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity.
As a councillor he successfully advocated that Clearview spend
almost $300,000 on provincially mandated water system upgrades
at aging community halls, saying the facilities were the heart
and soul of rural life and must be kept open.
LANG is originally from Scotland. He came to Canada about 30
years ago.
He and his wife, Marjorie, have two grown daughters.
Earlier this year
LANG returned to Scotland, where his mother
still lives, taking a grandchild along for the trip. At the time,
LANG remarked while it was nice to visit he'd long since considered
Canada his home.
A memorial service for
LANG will be held at Creemore's Station
on the Green, 10 Caroline Street, at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
McKENZIE said the family is still waiting for autopsy results
to determine the cause of death.
For more information, call Fawcett Funeral Home in Creemore at 466-2108.

I Remember -- Desmond "Debby"
PIERS
By Fraser McKEE,
Thursday,
November 10, 2005, Page S9
Retired reserve naval officer and author Fraser
McKEE writes
about Rear Admiral Desmond
PIERS, whose obituary appeared on
November 5.
I remember encountering Rear Admiral Desmond
PIERS in Liverpool
in May of 1993 at the 50th anniversary celebrations for the turnaround
in the Battle of the Atlantic, in which he had been a valiant
participant. I had worked for him at war's end at the Stadacona
naval base, and our paths had crossed occasionally since then.
One of the major events of the celebration that May was to be
a large fleet review in Moelfre Bay, some 30 kilometres from
the city, with participants from countries involved in the original
battle.
Tour boats went out with spectators to see the Queen pass through
the fleet, and Rear Admiral
PIERS was in one of them. I didn't
bother going because the weather was absolutely appalling, so
bad that the smaller minesweepers and submarines had to come
in because their anchors wouldn't hold.
That evening, I encountered Debby in the lobby of our hotel and
asked him how the fleet review had gone. "It was marvellous,"
he responded with much glee. "It pissed down rain, was so foggy
you couldn't see anything much and as rough as hell! It was as
realistic as the real thing in the North Atlantic. Great!"
He would have known, because he'd been there for several years,
in exactly those conditions. It was a typical Debby attitude.
