BETTS,
Douglas
Nelson
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Doug
BETTS on Tuesday, July 19th, 2005 in his 75th year at Scarborough
Grace Hospital. Doug fought to overcome two heart attacks in
two weeks but unfortunately could not overcome the complications
that they brought on. In typical Doug
BETTS style, he managed
to tell a joke to his family just before passing. Doug will be
missed by his loving wife, Wilma. This year, they would have
celebrated their golden anniversary in September. Doug was devoted
to his three sons: Bruce, Brent (Dianna), and Terry (Beverly)
and adored his three grandchildren: Julia, Katie and Brad. They
will all surely make him proud. Doug was born on February 28,
1931 to Ulmer and Effie
BETTS in Campleton, New Brunswick. Along
with four brothers and four sisters; he spent time on the family
farm in Matapedia that had a river running through it, which
spawned several outstanding fish stories. Over a thirty-year
period, Doug worked as an Investment Advisor at Moss, Lawson
in Toronto (now
HSBC
Securities) until the day he died. As proud
as Doug was of his business life, he was more proud of how well
his clients had done who had trusted him and had been so loyal
to him over the years. He was pleased to call them Friends. Through
this strong client base, Doug became the largest holder of both
Templeton and Trimark funds at the same time, something he was
very proud of. Doug live by the motto that if you help others
get what they want, you will get everything you want. Over the
past ten years, Doug passed this philosophy on to his partner
and son, Terry, who has continued on in his footsteps. As proud
as Doug was of his business life, he was even prouder of his
volunteer work and giving. In the late 1970's, Doug bought ten
buses, and with help, filled them with children every Sunday
morning bound for the People's Church to hear a positive message
that they may not have heard other wise. He was more recently
a long time member of the Agincourt Pentecostal Church and will
be remembered as a generous volunteer. Lacking the need for material
possession, Doug's major purpose of working so hard was to be
able to give more away. Doug amazed everyone by his positive
outlook on life. His Friends will remember Doug fondly, for his
quick-witted sense of humour, kind and friendly demeanour. Please
feel free to respond in kind with a joke or happy thought of
Doug at the Ogden Funeral Home, 4164 Sheppard Avenue East (between
Kennedy Road and Midland Avenue). on Monday, July 26th from 2-4
p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday,
July 27th at 11 a.m. in the chapel. Sincere thanks to the doctors,
the wonderful nurses and chaplains at the Scarborough Grace Hospital.
Flowers are gratefully declined. If so desired, memorial remembrances
may be made to the Scarborough Hospital Foundation, Grace Division,
E.R. Renewal Fund, 3050 Lawrence Avenue East, Toronto, Ontario,
M1P 2V5 in memory of Doug
BETTS.
