Passed away January 26th, 2005 at Sunnybrook and Women's College
Health Sciences Centre (Veteran's Wing), Toronto at the age of
88. Born in Chatham, Ontario on June 11th, 1916, the
son of Russell
Stanley and Alice Maude
(STEVENS)
MERIFIELD. He will be lovingly
remembered by his wife of 61 years, Helen
(KYDD;) his children,
Russell,
Elizabeth
(Dario
GALINDO) and Thomas (Linda;) his grandchildren,
Marion and Simon; his sister, Jeanne (Robin)
BECK; his sister-in-law,
Betty SHARPE; and many nieces and nephews. Graduate of McGill
University B.A. (1938) and B.C.L. (1941), where he was President
of the Student Society and played on the 1938 Championship Rugby
Team. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War 2,
Lieutenant, Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. He initially
practiced private law in Montreal, then worked at Shawinigan
Water and Power Company. He was Vice President and Secretary
of the Royal Trust Company of Canada. In 1967, he moved to Toronto
as Vice President and General Manager of Victoria and Grey Trust
Company until his retirement. He later spent many years serving
as the Secretary/ Treasurer of The Canadian Club (Toronto). Active
member of the Glenview Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian
Church of Canada (as Elder, Treasurer, member of the Building
Society and director of the Canadian Bible Society); and the
Chartered Institute of Secretaries; a teacher of corporate law
and a governor of Sir George Williams University. Author of several
books, including Canadian Secretarial Practice, 'From Country
Trust to National Trust' (a history of the National Trust Company),
a history of the Canadian Clubs, and 'Who Said That?' (a compilation
of Empire Club speeches). Member of the Donalda Club (Toronto)
and the Hermitage Club (Magog, Quebec). He was also a musician
and long-time volunteer pianist for the veterans at Sunnybrook
Hospital. Friends may call at the Trull 'North Toronto' Funeral
Home, 2704 Yonge St. (5 blocks south of Lawrence) on Sunday,
January 30th from 12: 00 to 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The
funeral service will be held at Glenview Presbyterian Church,
1 Glenview Avenue (3 blocks south of Lawrence, west of Yonge)
on Monday, January 31st at 2: 00 p.m.. Donations may be made to
the 'Sunnybrook and Women's Foundation', 2075 Bayview Avenue, H332,
Toronto, Ontario M4N 3M5 or to the Canadian Cancer Society. The
family would like to express their gratitude and thanks to the
staff of Sunnybrook and the caregivers from Homestead Careproviders.
