O'BYRNE,
Gerard -- Dispatch:
By Oliver MOORE,
Saturday,
August 6, 2005, Page M4
Doctors who were worried about his family's history of bone disease
warned Gerard
O'BYRNE not to have children. He listened to them,
aware that his grandmother, mother and cousin had all become
disabled later in life.
Instead, Mr.
O'BYRNE lived a bachelor life, maintaining a close
relationship with his unmarried sister for decades.
They were the last of the family, and 80-year-old Rita now admits
that, with her brother gone, she is "very lonely."
"He was my hero on the white horse," she said.
Although Ms.
O'BYRNE was too young to remember, she has been
told many times the story of how her nine-year-old brother was
half-cut as she entered the world. "I was born at home, Christmas
Eve," she said. "And my brother and his dog Dinty got into momma's
Christmas wine."
The two children enjoyed a childhood playing in High Park and
coming home for roast beef dinners cooked by their mom, who didn't
let a wheelchair stop her from being a mother.
The
Depression forced Mr.
O'BYRNE to quit university and go to
work.
He went back to school in his late 20s to become a teacher of
math and science, working at Malvern Collegiate Institute and
in Kitchener, Ontario
Mr. O'BYRNE took a slightly early retirement in the late 1980s
to help support his sister through cancer. They lived at their
home north of the Beaches until he had a fall in mid-June. He
died days short of his 91st birthday.
"We've always looked after each other," Ms.
O'BYRNE said. "When
my mom died, she said on her deathbed, 'Take care of Rita.' And
he did."
