Men drowned during work break
The two young men had been doing construction work at a beachfront
home.
By Patrick
MALONEY, and Sharon
HO, Free Press Reporters
Rondeau -- A day after two men drowned in Lake Erie's choppy
waters, reminders of the failed rescue attempts still were scattered
along the shoreline yesterday.
Packaging for resuscitators and defibrillator patches were among
medical debris left in the sand where rescuers tried Thursday
evening to save two Chatham-Kent men, both weak swimmers, who
spent 30 minutes lost in the lake near Rondeau Provincial Park.
The double drowning raised the London region's death toll from
water mishaps to seven since the start of June.
After working all day on a beachfront home, construction workers
John MARTENS, 26, of Chatham, and Jacob
KLASSEN, 23, of nearby
Louisville -- related by marriage -- entered the lake.
Rescue crews were called soon after, but the two were pronounced
dead at a Chatham hospital.
A third construction worker escaped to call for help.
Despite the double drowning, area residents said water conditions
Thursday appeared anything but deadly.
"(MARTENS and
KLASSEN) were down in what I consider the shallow
area," said Tom
TOWNSEND, who witnessed much of the rescue attempt.
"(It) was a nice day -- there was an undertow, but not what I
consider dangerous,"
TOWNSEND added.
He said he was impressed with the rescue efforts, which included
police officers, firefighters and two search boats.
The water around Rondeau Provincial Park is generally calm, said
area business owner Lori
O'SHAY/SHEA.
"You just don't think about it," she said.
"I was totally shocked. When something like this happens, you
certainly do think of (the potential dangers)."
The owner of The Stone Men, a Ridgetown construction company
that employed
KLASSEN and
MARTENS, declined comment.
Though the number of drownings in the region this season seems
high, one expert said seven deaths in one month isn't uncommon.
"Drownings peak in the summer and cluster around weekends --
especially long weekends," said Ed
BEAN of the Livesaving Society
of Canada.
