BOYD,
Ermaleen▼
(COWARD, née
SUNNATO)
Ermaleen Peacefully at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa
early Sunday, January 9, 2005, following a six month battle with
lymphoma. Ermaleen was born in Toronto on November 2, 1926 as
Ermaleen SUNNATO. As a young girl she took her mother's name
as Ermaleen
COWARD when her parents separated. She married Fred
BOYD in St. Alban's Church, Toronto, August 4, 1951. After her
mother died, Ermaleen supported herself through the late years
of high school and through nursing school at the former Western
Hospital, Toronto, where she graduated in 1950. She remained
at the Western Hospital as an operating room nurse until her
marriage. Moving to Ottawa after marriage she worked with the
Victorian Order of Nurses until first son Ronald was born. Brian
followed two years later. The family moved to Peterborough, Ontario
in 1955 where Andrea was born, and then to Deep River, Ontario
in 1959. During the years the family lived in Deep River, 1959-1967,
Ermaleen worked part time at the Deep River Hospital until Melissa
was born. In 1967 the family moved to the new community of Kanata,
now part of greater Ottawa. She soon became involved with the
Kanata Beaverbrook Community Association and for over two years
printed thousands of pages of the newsletter, the Kanata Standard,
on an old mimeograph machine in her basement. Subsequently she
became the Kanata Beaverbrook Community Association treasurer
and was named Kanata Beaverbrook Community Association Citizen
of the Year in 1976. She also became one of the early volunteers
at the Queensway Carleton Hospital even before it was built in
1976. Over the next two decades she managed the hospital's medical
library, as a volunteer. About the same time she became involved
with the Ottawa Committee of the Canadian Girls in Training initially
as a nurse at the Canadian Girls in Training Camp Kalalla near
Alcove, Quebec. Subsequently, for the past three decades she
served as treasurer of the three inter-connected groups, the
Canadian Girls in Training Ottawa Committee, Canadian Girls in
Training Camp Kalalla management, and Camp Kalalla (operation).
Over the past decade she has served several terms as secretary-treasurer
of the Region 9 of the Hospital Auxiliary Association of Ontario,
which is composed of the volunteer auxiliaries of almost all
of the hospitals in eastern Ontario. This involved doing much
of the arrangements for the group's spring and fall conferences.
She was awarded the Ontario Bicentennial Medal in 1984 for her
volunteer activities. She is remembered with love by her children
and their spouses: Ron (Brenda;) Brian (Cindy;) Andrea
MacKELLAR
(Hugh) and Melissa; by her five grandchildren, Jennifer, Nicole,
Christopher, Stephanie and Gregory; by her sister Joyce
O'NEILL
and brother Charlie
COWARD; and by her husband of 53 years, Fred.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Central Chapel of Hulse,
Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Friday, January 14,
2005 at 11 a.m., followed by a reception. Interment of Urn in
the family plot at Saint John's Cemetery in Kanata, in the spring.
