I Remember -- John
D'AMICO
By Ron WICKS,
Wednesday,
July 13, 2005, Page S9
Former
National
Hockey League referee Ron
WICKS writes about
John D'AMICO, whose obituary appeared on May 31.
I first met John in October of 1964 when he officiated his first
game as a rookie linesman in Kitchener, Ontario I was his linesman
partner. The referee, Frank
UDVARI, said he was going to be a
good one -- we joked that he would have my job within three weeks
and I was soon sent to the American league as a referee. I
returned to the National Hockey League in 1967 as a referee where
I re-united with John and worked with him for about 20 years.
John would hustle old hockey sticks and take them to kids at
local hospitals (he also ran an Easter Seal Skate-a-thon at Ontario
reformatories) and instructed at clinics around the world where
he met such interesting people as a Russian referee who told
him that, in Russia, the referee was "boss' and that linesman
were "shit." That got John's attention. No player or coach ever
gave a rookie referee a hard time when John was around.
