Man slain outside pizza shop
Sasha BAILEY killed in barrage as he left eatery
Fast food outlet manager scared after 'big bang'
By Jim WILKES,
Staff
Reporter
A 22-year-old Scarborough man was shot to death early yesterday
as he stepped from a midtown shop with a medium pizza and an
order of chicken wings.
Sasha BAILEY fell to the sidewalk in a hail of bullets shortly
after 1 a.m. as his killers, who'd waited outside the Pizza Pizza
shop on Danforth Ave., fled down an alley across the street.
BAILEY showed no signs of life at the scene and was pronounced
dead at St. Michael's Hospital. An autopsy is planned later today.
Pizza
Pizza manager Ken
TO said he heard "a big bang" and then
two women and a man rushed inside screaming at him to call police.
He said that after dialing 911, he didn't look outside.
"I was scared," said To, 35. "You never know what might happen.
"Maybe the guy is still there with a gun."
TO said the dead man and two pals had just picked up their order.
As BAILEY carried the bag of food out the door, at least three
shots rang out and he fell, a few metres from Woodycrest Ave.
Twelve hours later, the pizza and wings still lay on the blood-spattered
sidewalk until they were picked up by an old man hobbling by
on a cane. He inspected the contents and walked away with only
the plastic bag.
Police sealed off Danforth Ave. between Jones and Pape Aves.
and the alley. Early yesterday afternoon, Malina
KALEEVA arrived
at the scene to reclaim a car, which was coated with fingerprinting
powder. She had hoped to drive it away shortly after the shooting,
but police told her it was needed by forensic officers because
the shooters had been seen leaning against it as they waited
for the victim to emerge from the pizza shop.
But homicide Det. Bill
VIEIRA wouldn't describe the shooting
as an ambush.
He would only say that
BAILEY "had a confrontation with a number
of persons."

VIEIRA,
Iria
Suddenly, at Toronto Western Hospital, on Tuesday, August 23,
2005, in her 71st year. A Jane Jacobs award recipient, Officer
of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique by the Government of Portugal
and Queen's Jubilee medal winner for her tireless and innovative
community work, Iria came to Canada from Portugal in 1964 and
has been a dynamic and inspirational advocate in Toronto ever
since. She touched the lives of countless individuals both as
a Social Worker for 30 years in the Toronto District School Board,
and as a volunteer in the city's west end. She was passionate
about social justice and advocated strongly for inclusion of
newcomers into the city's fabric. She was instrumental in ensuring
that non-English speaking seniors have a voice in initiatives
sponsored by the City of Toronto. Iria's wide-ranging volunteer
involvement was a testament to her love and respect for all people
of the community. She was a co-founder and Board member of the
former Portuguese Social Services Centre. Particularly close
to her heart was the Portuguese Women 55+ Support Group of Ontario,
which she co-founded and St. Christopher House, where she volunteered
since her arrival in Canada. During the past four decades at
St. Christopher House, Iria was active as Friendly Visitor, in
Elder Abuse prevention projects, an integral part of H.A.T.S.,
an innovative theatre project advocating for betterment of seniors'
quality of life and served on its Board of Directors. Her other
volunteer activities included the Canadian Hearing Society, Maynard
Nursing Home and Toronto Seniors Task Force. A devout Christian,
Iria was an active member of St. Peter's Church, and later of
St. Clare Church. Iria will be dearly missed by all who have
known her. Visitation to be held on Monday, August 29 from 2
