Jan JAGIELLOWICZ
By Jadzia JAGIELLOWICZ,

July 20, 2005, Page A16
Father, art lover. Born May 12, 1925, in Wilno, Poland. Died
April 25, of a stroke, in Cambridge, Ontario, aged 79.
Jan was a man of great perceptiveness and empathy. He often astonished
me by describing, in great detail, the character of one of my
Friends after having met him or her only a few times. He would
then continue to speak kindly of, and ask about that person,
ever after. He couldn't walk down the street without engaging
the neighbours in conversation. He always had a question about
what they were doing.
Taken forcibly from his boarding school at the age of 13, he
was sent to a Russian "work camp" in Siberia. Two years later,
he escaped and enlisted in the Polish army. He travelled around
the world with the army, training in Edinburgh, Scotland and
in Palestine. Among other duties, he escorted German prisoners
of war to Canada aboard ship.
After the war, he settled in England, and then emigrated to Lethbridge,
Alberta., in 1953. Soon after he followed Friends to Cambridge
(then Galt) in Ontario, where he worked as a car mechanic and
later a machinist. He met a beautiful girl, Yolanta
WYGANOWSKA,
and settled down to a life with her and their five children.
Jan was passionate about his interests, his views and his family.
Perhaps due to his keen observation of human nature, he often
uncannily predicted social, political and economic trends. He
spent many hours in rapt conversation about politics and economics.
Jan was an entrepreneur, a man of courage. In his mid-forties,
with five children in tow, he bought a corner store that he and
his wife ran while he also kept his day job. Jan wanted the best
for his children and grandchildren; he worked and saved to make
that dream come true.
Jan gravitated to young people perhaps because he was always
looking to exchange new ideas. So many of them came to his funeral:
his children's Friends, sons and daughters of his old Friends,
his young protégé from work. So many stopped to say how much
they liked him; how they'd had interesting conversations with
him; how he made them feel like they were part of his family.
He made many trips to visit his grandchildren in Calgary and
never stopped singing their praises.
An avid sportsman and indefatigable outdoorsman, on a number
of occasions he canoed the length of the Grand River in three
days. He was an ardent canoeist, cyclist and swimmer, and, as
a young man, a member of a figure skating club. Some of my earliest
memories are of my Dad taking us skating every Sunday afternoon.
In later years, when I moved back to Cambridge as an adult, we
would swim together every Sunday.
Not only a thinker and an athlete, he had a great aesthetic sense.
He was a photographer and also a Picasso aficionado, and had
probably every book written about the man. He could fix a car
and build a bookcase and even invented a machine to cork the
bottles of excellent wine he made himself.
Jan was well-loved by the members of the Royal Canadian Legion.
He never missed a Remembrance Day ceremony or a colour guard.
When he talked about his fellow veterans you could tell how much
he cared about them.
As a very young man, he had once killed a bird for sport and
never forgot the pain it caused that innocent creature. Later,
he would zealously guard the nesting spots to which he attracted
families of birds, year after year. He used to tell his children
that if they felt stressed out by the world, to escape into nature.
It was his refuge.
A man of great empathy and many interests and talents, by far
his biggest accomplishment was in the many people who loved him.
Jadzia JAGIELLOWICZ is Jan's daughter.
