Ivan Clifford
MORGAN
By Mary Morgan
McKNIGHT,
Wednesday,
August 10, 2005, Page A14
Spiritual leader, theological educator, family man, friend. Born
August 14, 1912, in Paris, Ontario Died February 22 in Dundas,
Ontario, of natural causes, aged 92.
Ivan was born in a house on the Grand River. When he was a baby,
he and his family were rescued during a flood by a dray (a flat
wagon with sides on it pulled by horses). When Ivan was 6, his
younger brother, Frank, developed breathing problems. The doctor
recommended the family move out west where the air was dryer
and cleaner. They sold everything, and took the Grand Trunk train
to Saskatchewan. (Frank soon recovered.)
One of Ivan's greatest achievements during his year in the west
was learning to "lasso" gophers when they stuck their heads out
of their holes -- for which he was paid a penny for 10 gophers.
The MORGANs moved back to Ontario, where Ivan discovered in high
school that he had leadership ability. At Sir Adam Beck Collegiate
in London, Ontario, he was president of the student body, editor
of the school magazine, and a star basketball player.
At 19, he became president of his church youth group of 150 young
people, and then later president of the citywide church youth
group. After high school, Ivan couldn't afford to continue his
education. He drove a grocery delivery truck, and then became
a purchasing agent.
Feeling called to become a minister, he arrived at McMaster University
in 1933 to begin his training, with $17 in his pocket. The academic
fee, plus room-and-board, was $500. But jobs and gifts appeared,
and paid for everything.
At McMaster, the men and women of the two university residences
held a dinner, and the men picked out of a hat the name of the
girl they would take to the dinner. Ivan picked the name of Ruth
RAITHBY, and they were together ever after, including 62 years
of marriage. Ruth was musical, and beautiful. She had a keen
mind, and a sparkling sense of humour.
Ivan served three Baptist churches as minister -- in Hamilton,
Peterborough and Windsor. He was viewed as a good shepherd, was
an outstanding preacher, encouraged interchurch co-operation,
and was active in community service. He had a magnificent speaking
voice, and when he spoke, to many or a few, you could hear a
pin drop.
In Hamilton, he worked with the Children's Aid Society hosting
a weekly radio phone-in show about children's issues. On the
morning after his first child, Franklin, was born, the radio
announcer told the listening audience that Ivan was a new father,
and would finally be able to give knowledgeable advice about
children. Ivan took great delight in being a father and grandfather
whether it meant walking the floor with a colicky baby, or
tobogganing in the park.
In 1960, he joined the faculty of McMaster Divinity College as
professor of preaching and pastoral care. And from 1966-78, he
was principal of the college.
Upon retirement he took some time for travelling with Ruth, and
he also returned to interim ministry in many Baptist and United
Churches in southern Ontario.
The loves of his life, besides his family and Friends, have been
his church, his alma mater, his rose garden, cooking, summer
cottaging, crossword puzzles, mystery stories, the humour of
P.G. Wodehouse, and the Toronto Blue Jays.
The book Stories of My Life: Ivan Clifford
MORGAN (written with
his daughter, Mary) was published earlier this year. Ivan was
celebrated at an autographing party, complete with a photographer,
balloons, flowers, and refreshments. After the party, overjoyed
that so many family and Friends had gathered, he said that it
was like being at his own funeral while he was still alive. Two
weeks later, he died.
Mary Morgan
McKNIGHT is Ivan's daughter.
