YAO,
Lin
Lin died November 10, 2005. Born in 1914, his life was a marriage
between 20th century China and Canada. As a student he was active
in the May 4th Chinese nationalist movement. In 1936 he obtained
a Boxer rebellion scholarship, a prestigious award paid for from
reparations payments generously given back to China by the United
States. After a PhD from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania,
he went to work for Inco in Sudbury, where he met Ming, a Canadian
doctor. Together they returned to Tianjin under United Nations
Relief and Rehabilitation Agency, working for two years on China's
reconstruction. As Lin Biao's army triumphed in Manchuria, they
decided to return to Canada, and on the boat they had a second
son. Lin worked as a research scientist for Energy Mines and
Resources Canada in Ottawa. In his retirement, he took up the
hobby of solving Laplace transforms and returned to Nankai University
to teach themodynamics. Lin leaves sons and daughters in law
Ted, Colleen
PARRISH,
Tom and Lillian and grandchildren, Colin,
Emily and Percy. A short memorial service will be held at Ted
and Colleen's house, at 3: 30, Sunday December 4, 2005. In lieu
of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Society of Toronto would
be appreciated.
