Ron TURPIN and Arthur
LUCAS, 1962 -- Died This Day
Criminals hanged back to back in Toronto's Don Jail
TURPIN, 29, of Toronto had killed a police officer in a Toronto
street battle, while
LUCAS, 54, of Detroit, had slashed the throats
of a young woman and
an American police informant. The execution
was bungled. Cyril
EVERITT, a Salvation Army chaplain and a witness
to the hangings, said in 1986: "
TURPIN went cleanly. But
LUCAS,
the heavier of the two, had too much rope for his weight. His
head was almost torn off. He was pretty well decapitated; only
the strength of the sinews in the neck kept the head attached
to the body. There was blood everywhere, gushing out." It was
the last execution in Canada.
