SCHUETT, Margaret Mary "Peggy" (née BURK/BURKE) (1921-2006)
Of Calgary, Alberta, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 20, 2006 at the age of 85 years. Peggy was born March 5, 1921 at Kingston, Ontario to Albert and Margaret (SULLIVAN) BURK/BURKE. One of five children, she grew up in a proud Irish Catholic family. During the war, Peggy worked in Ottawa and then returned to Kingston where she met her husband George. They married June 21, 1943 and crossed Canada many times, living in 17 cities and 5 provinces. An independent and resourceful woman, Peggy moved with their three children in advance of her husband to set up the new family home. She loved entertaining the many Friends and family with whom she and George shared their lives, but she treasured her quiet time also, creating beautiful needlework and tending her adored garden. When George retired, he and Peggy began travelling the country returning to places they loved and exploring the many parts of Canada, making new memories and new Friends along the way. After George passed away suddenly in 1978, Peggy went to work for ten years until she retired. Her greatest legacy was the inspiration she provided her family: an open-minded spirit, tireless perseverance, and enthusiasm and joy for life. Her greatest influence is most evident in the imaginations and independence of her three children, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Peggy was caring, humble, romantic, and accepting of everyone. There was never a person who met her who did not love her fun loving and generous spirit. Peggy smiled all the days of her life including her last in spite of the burden of Alzheimer's disease. She was a source of joy for everyone she knew. Family and Friends alike will remember her as 'Grandma Peggy' with a ready smile and a 'twinkle in her eye'. Full of fun and always enjoying a good laugh, Peggy brought life to every gathering. Peggy was so proud of her family and is survived by her two daughters, Margie SCHUETT of Toronto and Kate MUNOZ (John PRESTON) of Calgary by her son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Cheryl SCHUETT of Calgary by her six grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband Dick McDOUGALL, Karen (Chris GRAHAM,) John (Lindsey HODGSON) of Toronto, Rebecca (Ryan KALMACOFF,) Robbie and Megan; and by her four great-grandchildren, Robyn, Blake, Abby and Burke McDOUGALL. She is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Mary BURK/BURKE of Drumheller, their children, Julie, Dan and Mark (Natalie) and their families her niece Jackie; her nephew Hugh. If you're fortunate, you'll find someone with whom you can share your life and who can show you how easy it is to challenge your mind, to crave new adventures, to not settle for less than you deserve. Someone to embrace the little things that really matter, and of course to love. Michael shared all of this and so much more with me, his family and so very many Friends. Michael passed away peacefully at Princess Margaret Hospital on Friday, May 12th from a form of Leukemia called A.P.L. Thank you to Doctor WELLS of Sunnybrook, Doctor SCHUH, Doctor PECKHAM and all the very caring staff at Princess Margaret Hospital, in particular, our extended family of nurses in 15A. You all took such special care of Michael, especially over the last few months. To everyone who stood by us both and provided support and a strong shoulder, thank you. For those who knew him, you'll not be surprised that Michael had asked that his many Friends and extended family exchange memories over a variety of music, exceptional wine and delicious food. Details on the how and when we'll do this will be shared in the coming weeks. A private family gathering will be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. He will be sadly missed and truly loved by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His sister Madylin and her husband Lorne McCARTNEY of Peterborough and brother Clayton and his wife Doreen SMITH of London will miss their big brother. Bob served in the Army in World War 2 and has been a long time member and Elder of New Saint_James Presbyterian Church. He was a Senator at Sunningdale Golf and Country Club, and was active in Gyros of London and the Historical Automobile Society of Canada. Bob was blessed with a large extended family, special Friends and caring neighbours. He and his family are thankful for the support of his caregivers. Tom served overseas during the Second World War as a pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force He had been employed at Stacey Brothers, Standard Products and Mitchell Chrysler in Mitchell and had worked in the Parts Department at Red Dale Motors and Kalbfleisch Brothers in Stratford. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Festival City. Beloved husband of Helen Catherine (HOLMAN) COULTON whom he married at Stratford on May 8, 1944. Dear father of Elizabeth HICKS and husband Ron of London and David COULTON and wife Lynda of Stratford. Beloved grandfather of Christopher and Nicholas HICKS and Ashley and Brian COULTON. SCHULTZ, Sir John Christian▲ -- Died This Day
Businessman, doctor and politician born on January 1, 1840, at Amherstburg, Upper Canada (Ont.)
Although born into poor circumstances, he was determined to become a doctor and saved up to go to college. He did not graduate but moved to the Red River settlement in what is now Manitoba, where he felt qualified to advertise himself as a physician. Outspoken and conservative, he published a newspaper called the Nor'Wester. He also had other enterprises and was known for his unscrupulous business practices. In time, he led a local anti-Métis group during the Red River Rebellion of 1869-70. In fact, he helped cause the rebellion by his condescending and disdainful attitude to the Métis, whom he had alienated in business. He lobbied Ottawa to annex the region and populate it with settlers from Ontario. The Métis soon arrested him, but he got away to Ontario to incite more alarm. Later, he went back and became a politician, first as an member of Parliament and then in the Senate. In 1888, he became lieutenant-governor of Manitoba. He retired in 1895 and was knighted.
