You know for yourselves that I worked with my own hands to support
myself and my companions… remembering 'It is more blessed to

CASHORE,
Catherine▼ (1946-2006)
Passed away quietly on April 29, 2006 after a long and courageous
battle with cancer. Ms.
CASHORE, born in Norristown, Pennsylvania,
arrived in Canada in 1964 to matriculate at the University of
Toronto, from which she earned three degrees. After University,
she chose to remain in Toronto and to become a Canadian citizen.
She had a long career in library service, most recently in the
Medical Sciences Library at the University of Toronto. Catherine's
life was rich in accomplishments and in a broad spectrum of interests.
She was dedicated to many social causes, working tirelessly in
the areas of refugee and labour rights. She was an avid swimmer
and an enthusiastic supporter of Canadian figure skating. She
traveled widely, particularly enjoying her trips by rail across
Canada. She was an accomplished linguist, fluent in four languages.
Her love of language drew her to the theatre. Her fascination
with the plays of William Shakespeare prompted many visits to
the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario. Her greatest
joy, however, was Music. She was an active member of several
choral groups and Opera companies in Toronto, and she spent many
summers exploring a wide range of musical styles and practices
at the Canadian Amateur Musicians' Camp in Lakefield, Ontario.
Catherine will be greatly missed by her family: her mother, Madeline B.
CASHORE, three brothers and their spouses: William J. and Pauline
CASHORE,
J.
Michael and Nedda
CASHORE, Thomas J. and Adaline
CASHORE: and one sister, Mary C.
WILLIHNGANZ, and her husband
Walter. In addition, she is survived by three maternal aunts,
one uncle, numerous nephews and nieces and one great nephew.
After a life of love and of service to others here in Toronto,
she leaves behind a wealth of good and cherished Friends. A Mass
of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Rosary Catholic
Church, 354 St Clair Avenue W, on Friday, May 5th, 2006 at 1: 30 p.m.
A viewing will be held at the Jerrett Funeral Home, 1141 St. Clair
Avenue W, Toronto, at 11: 30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. prior to the funeral.
All are invited to a gathering to celebrate Catherine's life
which will take place in the Holy Rosary Church hall immediately
after the funeral service. Interment will be with her family
in the U.S. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that
contributions be made to a memorial scholarship which will enable
future students to attend summer music sessions at Canadian Amateur
Musicians' Camp, Ontario. Contributions may be made at the Jerrett
Funeral Home or directly to Canadian Amateur Musicians' Camp,
Ontario. For information contact the office at: e-mail: ontario@cammac.ca

CASHORE,
Catherine▲ -- Dispatch:
By Oliver MOORE,
Page M5
'She knew that time was precious," said Mary
WILLIHNGANZ,
Catherine
CASHORE's sister. "She knew she had one year left, and she did
what she loved."
For Ms. CASHORE, that meant dining out with Friends, going to
Stratford and singing in the chorus of her favourite ensembles.
Ms. CASHORE was born in 1946, in Pennsylvania, and came to Toronto
at 18. After earning three degrees at the University of Toronto,
she found a job in the university's library system.
Ms. CASHORE was very aware of the rights of the oppressed --
which Ms. WILLIHNGANZ said was taught them by their father, and
she made several trips to Nicaragua in the 1980s.
"Looking around her apartment, I found one button after another
from every human-rights cause you could ever espouse," her sister
said. "She lived a life of simplicity, never covetous or jealous
of the successes of others."
Ms. CASHORE died of cancer on April 29. Her funeral was held
yesterday, with the family directing memorial donations to the
Canadian Amateur Musicians' Camp in Lakefield, Ontario

Victim's death stuns co-workers
'She was very nice. She always came in and did her job'
Police say body dumped in alley, woman killed elsewhere
By Steve RENNIE,
Staff
Reporter
Kori WILLIS took a long look at the photograph and placed a palm
to his forehead.
"I can't believe it's her," he said.
The woman in the photograph was 20-year-old Yasmin
ASHAREH, whose
body was found in a bag last Friday at a housing complex across
the street from the Food Basics grocery store on Martin Grove
Rd. where she worked.
WILLIS, the store's assistant manager, was still visibly stunned
moments after seeing
ASHAREH's picture. He said
ASHAREH had only
worked at the store a few weeks, but was well liked by her co-workers.
He recalls chatting with her during smoke breaks.
"She was very nice, very outspoken," he said. "She always came
in and did her job."
Toronto police said
ASHAREH died from multiple stab wounds to
the neck. Her body was then thrown in a bag and left for days
in an alley at the Martin Grove Estates, a housing project on
John Garland Blvd., until trash collectors found it Friday.
Homicide
Det.
Wayne
BANKS said the trash collectors moved the
bag a short distance before noticing its weight and smell. They
then called police to the housing complex.
At a news conference held yesterday at police headquarters on
College Street,
BANKS discounted earlier reports the body was dismembered.
He said all the remains were intact and there were no missing
limbs.
BANKS said
ASHAREH had not been stabbed to death in the alley
where her body was found, although the body had been there for
"several" days. He said it wasn't unusual that the garbage, which
is supposed to be picked up Tuesdays and Fridays, wasn't collected
last Tuesday.
Those who knew
ASHAREH were still trying yesterday to make sense
of her slaying.
At a nearby housing co-op down the street, a man, who declined
to give his name, said he spoke occasionally with
ASHAREH while
he shopped.
"Why would anyone want to kill her?" said the man. "Who would
do something like that?"
BANKS did reveal that
ASHAREH lived alone in a rented room near
the complex where her body was found. He said police are trying
to determine her whereabouts in the time leading to her murder,
adding ASHAREH had not been reported missing. She had apparently
lived in the area for "awhile,"
BANKS said.
He said ASHAREH was born in Canada, but her family is from Somalia.
The detective said she has a brother, two sisters and a single
mother.
BANKS said family, who live in Peel Region, is "devastated" by
ASHAREH's death. Police are checking dental records to confirm
ASHAREH's identity because family members "still don't want to
come to grips that this is their daughter,"
BANKS said.
Police are investigating whether
ASHAREH was in a relationship.
BANKS said yesterday she had previously been in a relationship
and police have already questioned that person.
"We're investigating every theory and we won't leave any stone
unturned until we find the killer of this young lady," he said.
