Life was a parade for Millie
SANDRIN
Former reeve worked hard at village's Santa Claus parade
By Scott DUNN,
Tuesday,
April 11, 2006
Millie SANDRIN, the community-minded, Santa suit-wearing, laughter-loving
former Chatsworth reeve, died Monday at 66.
She died of cancer, which was diagnosed last summer.
Though quiet around the county council table unless something
got her excited, she was relied upon to tell a joke or two at
council lunches.
At a Grey County warden's party, she dressed up as Rita MacNeil
to lip-synch the popular Cape Breton singer's songs. She started
getting invitations to do all sorts of parties and did about
five or six a year.
She drove a school bus for 23 years, coached girls hockey and
baseball, umpired ball and dragged the ball diamond before gametime,
and drove hockey players to games on the bus.
She jointly won the Alan Loucks Memorial trophy for recreation
in the late 1980s with fellow Chatsworth councillor Terry McKay.
"She did a lot for the village here," said Laurie
STILLER, the
eldest of the three girls Walter and Millie
SANDRIN had. "I think
a lot of kids here can say that she was kind of their mom, too,
always being there playing baseball, hockey, bus driving."
She was a Chatsworth Legion ladies' auxiliary member and is credited
with helping to start the Chatsworth Christmas parade
Ms. SANDRIN began putting on a Santa suit and visiting children
in the village on Christmas Eve 32 years ago. When the parade
began a few years later, she was Santa's local representative
for 25 years. She rode in the parade in a cherry picker one year
and a manure spreader another, she once said.
If she is to be remembered for one thing, it would be for her
community involvement,
STILLER said.
McKAY, a Chatsworth councillor for 22 years, served with Ms.
SANDRIN
and lost to her when she became reeve. He saw her a week before
she died. "She was a wonderful woman, she will be sadly missed."
She served as a village councillor for 23 years and as reeve
for seven. She chose not to run for council for the amalgamated
Municipality of Chatsworth in 2000.
She got involved in politics for the love of the community,
McKAY
said. "As far as Millie being a politician, I don't think Millie
was a politician. I think she got in there because she wanted
to be able to help the village. And she certainly did that."
Chatsworth Mayor Howard
GREIG remembered
SANDRIN's sense of humour
most.
There will be a minute's silence in her honour at the next Chatsworth
council meeting April 19.
She is survived by her children Laurie and her husband Gord
STILLER
Sharon and her husband Jim
STIRLING and Donna
SANDRIN and her
partner John
ENGLISH and her grandchildren.
Visitation hours Wednesday will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
at Currie Funeral Home in Chatsworth. The funeral will take place
at 1 p.m. at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on John Street
in Chatsworth. Interment will be at Glen Williams Cemetery, near
Georgetown. Ms.
SANDRIN's late husband, her parents and grandparents
are in the family plot there.
A lunch will be served at the Chatsworth Legion after the funeral
service.

REID,
Ian▲
With the greatest sadness, we announce that heart disease took
Ian REID on March 23, in Saint Thomas. His Friends are invited
to pay their respects at 11: 00 a.m. on Friday, March 31. A gravesite
service will be held at Holy Angels' Cemetery in Saint Thomas,
Ontario. Ian, who previously lived in London, Mississauga, Toronto,
Chicago, Victoria, and Timmins was proud of his adopted Canadian
citizenship. Born at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in the City of
London, Ian and his brother Mac emigrated from England with their
parents in 1947. Harsh winters in Timmins were only one of many
difficulties that Ian overcame. When their mother Harriet, began
long radiation treatments to combat cancer, Ian and Mac sacrificed
childhood play to care for their baby brother; the love for reading
and learning they transferred to Brian enabled him to become
a Doctor of Philosophy, but Ian's schooling suffered and he matured
too quickly. By the time his mother died in 1965, he had already
married for the first time to Frances, mother of Ian, Diane,
and Réal. It was in the 1960s that Ian began helping others through
charitable acts that continued throughout his life, culminating
in recognition by the Governor-General of Canada. Ian was honoured
for his service to the Canadian Red Cross, supporting their work
with plasma and apheresis and donating blood himself more than
200 times. Never one to seek recognition, he helped others because
in his democratic world view he hoped that everyone would do
what they could. Based on his experience in palliative care,
Ian did appear in a volunteer training video for London Hospice.
Into his busy family and work life, he crammed many activities
to benefit others, serving on committees at London Transit and
the Byron branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. For many years,
Ian served as lay counselor to family, Friends, people in hospice
care, recovering alcoholics, and strangers whom he touched. Ian
and Rachelle fostered more than sixty children: "It was amazing,
the things that behaviour-challenged children would do for Ian,
things that they just wouldn't do for anybody else." Empathetic
and never condescending, he had a talent for making people feel
better. Earning a certificate in bereavement counseling from
the University of Western Ontario enabled him to apply research-supported
clinical advice to those who needed his support. A founder of
Employee Assistance at London Transit, Ian's pseudonym Justin
Fun was a columnist for the Omnibus newsletter. An avid writer
to newspaper editors, Ian also created a character Hal F. Wit,
who dispensed off-kilter advice through the neighbourhood newsletter.
Every day was humour day for Ian, especially when he helped others
deal with sadness. His work pals knew him as a "joke-a-day" man.
An unregenerate punster, Ian's gift for mimicry allowed him to
create many hilarious, imaginary, politically incorrect characters.
Snooker rivalry between Ian and Mac graduated to a snooker league
at Strokers involving many players in a dozen teams. Mac told
anyone who would listen that: "Starting the league was Ian's
way of getting a trophy." Like his father George, taken by cancer
in 1989, Ian was a proud Canadian who loved hockey - a game he
played for half a century. His team-mates loved his positive
talk and he used his management skills to make their rink time
fun time. In the past year at St. Gabriel's School he made play
time fun time for the little ones who called him, "Mr. Grandpa."
Those tykes are the only people who called him "Mister." To everyone
else, Ian REID was "Ian." Polite and unpretentious, but also
a man with a voice as huge as his heart, Ian made Friends every
place he went. He leaves a hole in his close family today. Rachelle,
his wife and companion these past 27 years, will miss him every
minute of every day. In addition to Diane, Ian, and Réal, Ian Sr.
leaves behind three daughters: Lori, Lisa, and Aimi; their husbands,
Michael BAYLEY and Gary
McKAY; two grand-children: Shannon
McKAY
and Fabbio
BALDINELLI; brothers, Mac of London and Brian of Annandale,
Virginia. He will be sorely missed by sisters, Joanne and Sharon.
A brother to all, Ian helped Raymond and Bob and Roger and too
many others to name. We, he left behind, will never know all
the good deeds he performed on this earth, but someone has been
watching. From Saint Thomas to St. Peter is a short drive. For
that trip we join Ian's best friend Fabbio, who says, "love you
Grampa."

McAVITY,
John
Malcolm
Of Vancouver died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family,
at 10: 00 o'clock on the morning of July 12, 2006. Born on July 18,
1917, John grew up in Rothesay, New Brunswick, attended Rothesay
Collegiate, and subsequently Royal Military College, Kingston,
quickly followed by service in England, Italy and the low countries
during the Second War. John is survived by his loving wife of
sixty four years, Adine (Dids)
McAVITY (née
OLAND,) his son Eric
Oland (Judith
MAXWELL) of Canmore, Alberta, his daughters Frances
Denise HAZEN of Vancouver and Catherine Martha
DOUGLAS/DOUGLASS
(John
KAYE) of North Saanich, British Columbia and his granddaughter
Martha ELYSE of Canmore, Alberta. He was predeceased by his eldest
son J.P. Malcolm (Patricia
McAVITY née

in 2001, by his parents Frances Edith
HAZEN and Thomas Malcolm
McAVITY in 1933 and 1944 respectively, and by his two younger
brothers, Douglas Malcolm of Greenwich, Connecticut and Peter
Malcolm of St Louis, Missouri. Dad started his post war working
life with his cousin Hugh
MacKAY in Saint John, New Brunswick,
in a profession in which he spent his entire working life, and
which culminated with
RBC
Dominion
Securities in Vancouver in
1986. As a volunteer in his adopted west coast community, Dad
served with great dedication as a director and chair of the board
of the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society and also as
a director and chair of the Board of Governors of Shawnigan Lake
School. Dad maintained a life long interest in his woodwork shop,
his garden, the Cook Gun Club at Vedder Crossing, fishing at
Pennask Lake and most importantly, in maintaining his close connection
with so many many Friends, all of which gave him immense pleasure.
In his later years, Dad suffered with kidney failure and spent
the last ten years of his life as a patient at the dialysis unit
at Vancouver General Hospital. During this time he was lovingly
supported by so many Friends: the "fly boys" who faithfully drove
him to and from so many of his dialysis appointments, and to
his care givers, Rudy, Maria and Fatima and Dino. A special thanks
to Rev. Kevin Dixon and Bishop Jim Cruickshank of Saint Mary's
Kerrisdale, to Doctor A.B. (Tony) Wilson and
to Dad's palliative
care team, Shirley, Lea and Rose-Marie, all of whom so graciously
assisted Dad/Grampa on the final leg of his life's journey. A Memorial
