Look around your garden, Lord,

Owen Sound doctors on the move
Three going from family practices to hospital. Others, including
nurse practitioner may help fill the gap.
By Jonathon
JACKSON,
Thursday,
March 30, 2006
Three family doctors in Owen Sound have given up or will soon
leave their practices, choosing to work exclusively at the city
hospital.
Dr. Ann FLEMING/FLEMMING has reportedly already made the switch and plans
to work solely in the emergency department, where she will soon
be joined by Doctor Cornelius
VAN
ZYL. Doctor Brendan
MULROY will also
leave family medicine for an undisclosed role at the hospital.
But
Doctor
Carolyn
TISHER has moved to town and established a practice
in the Eastview Professional Building, where she'll assume at
least some of
VAN
ZYL's patients.
And Sonja BRUIN, a primary care nurse practitioner, has opened
a practice at two locations in Owen Sound. She's working with
Dr. Hilli HUFF in the Medical Arts Building on Alpha Street and
with Doctor Anne-Louise
McARTHUR in the Greystone office building
on 8th Street East.
Coincidentally or not,
FLEMING/FLEMMING and
HUFF shared office space,
as do MULROY and
McARTHUR.
Sharon WINEGARDEN, a physician recruitment officer with Grey
Bruce Health Services, said another doctor may soon arrive to
replace FLEMING/FLEMMING but nothing is definite, including the percentage
of FLEMING/FLEMMING's patients she'd be willing to assume.
“As far as I know, there is one that's coming but she hasn't
signed anything yet,”
WINEGARDEN said.
MULROY had been acting as a spokesperson for a family health
team in Owen Sound. Plans for that team are still moving ahead,
albeit slowly, according to Doctor Cam
TWEEDIE, who is the team's
lead physician.
He said organizers received a development grant earlier this
month from the provincial Ministry of Health and have requested
an operational plan be submitted by April 30.
“We've got consultants working on this and we're working with
community groups to put together some programs,”
TWEEDIE said.
The province received more than 200 applications last year after
announcing the concept of family health teams in an effort to
ease the strain on hospital emergency wards.
The teams are to include physicians in group practice with other
health care workers like nurse practitioners, dietitians and
social workers and are to provide regular office care combined
with after-hours backup.
Owen Sound was one of 52 successful communities when the first
teams were identified last spring, but details were vague as
to how the province would fund and organize the teams.
TWEEDIE said more information has trickled down since then, but
many things remain unclear.
“It's homegrown here,” he said of his expectations for the health
team's makeup.
“They've sort of told us, you develop the programs that you feel
are necessary for the area, then give us the business plan. I
guess it'll be up to them whether they'll fund those programs
or not.
“We're just going to apply for what we think we need and what
we think we can provide in a reasonable structure that we can
handle here in town. If the ministry takes it, good. If they
don't, well, we tried.&rdquo
He wouldn't discuss the amount of the development grant or the
types of programs being considered, saying he'd rather announce
the accepted structure after the province has signed off on it.
But he did acknowledge the difficulty of trying to piece things
together considering it's never been done before and there are
no templates to follow.
“There hasn't been a family health team approved in its entirety
yet in the province,”
TWEEDIE said, noting there also doesn't
seem to be a timeline past the April 30 operational plan deadline.
“It could be a number of months before we hear back from them
on that.&rdquo
Health
Minister
George▼ Smitherman and Doctor Jim
McLEAN, the ministry's
primary care lead, visited Owen Sound together in April 2005 to
talk about the health teams.
McLEAN said then that it would take about two years to get the
local team up and running.

Dr. Giovanna

Heather▼
WHALEN, Marlene
CARSCALLEN and
Heather McLEAN for helping her through a mercifully brief and
intense battle with cancer. Born in Calgary, educated at the
Universities of Toronto, Ottawa and Carleton, Marjorie was known
and admired for her elegance, intellect, dry wit and peaceful
spirit. Betrayed by her body, her sharp mind continued her daily
ritual of completing the Globe and Mail crossword puzzle until
two days before she died. She also was able to enjoy most of
the televised World Championships in both skating and curling.
Marjorie▼ is predeceased by Bill

EAST and Stuart
LUSH. She lived a rich, full life
that had its share of both great joy and extreme hardships. A scholarship
at the age of 16 took her to Trois Pistolles, Quebec for a French
immersion experience, the memory of which she treasured ever
after. She met Bill in 1941 on one of many hiking and cycling
expeditions in the Canadian Youth Hostelling Association. She
shared Bill's keen advocacy for the Canadian Youth Hostelling
Association and hosted a chuckwagon-style Canadian Youth Hostelling
Association information booth at the Calgary Stampede of 1942.
Marjorie served in the Royal Canadian Air Force, Women's Division
working in Halifax during the war. With Bill and four other Friends,
she went on a cycling expedition to New England in 1946 visiting
Boston and Cape Cod. They were married in 1948 after both completed
university. Her professional career included teaching sociology
at the University of Toronto and she served as Registrar of Erindale
College (now Utah, Mississauga) for many years, a job that she
found deeply fulfilling especially when she knew she had helped
students make difficult choices in their lives. After her retirement
she focused on a quiet life of spiritual questing and fulfillment
and never missed the full season of the Canadian Opera Company.
Her community of Friends of Grace Church on-the-Hill meant the
world to her. At Grace Church she was a member of the Altar Guild,
the Cariboo Group, the Adult Christian Education Committee and
she was the founder and moving spirit of The Book and Film Club.
Serving as librarian, she was instrumental in the development
and maintenance of the Church library. Her spiritual path also
led her to become an oblate with the Sisters of St. Benedict
in Erie, Pennsylvania. Her many contributions to the Church were
recognized last Spring in the Award for Meritorious Service,
an honour that, very quietly, gave her great pride. Funeral service
will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2006, 11 a.m., Grace Church
On-The-Hill, 300 Lonsdale Road with luncheon and reception to
follow in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, please consider
donations to the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care, Mount
Sinai Hospital or the Palliative Care Unit at South Lake Regional

care.

REISLER,
Naomi
Elizabeth
By Susan REISLER,
Page
A22
Daughter, niece, friend. Born September 24, 1998 in Kitchener,
Ontario Died July 6, of a brain tumour, in Cambridge, Ontario,
aged 7.
Naomi's parents, Steve
REISLER and Karen
McLEAN say their beloved
Naomi arrived in this world with a purpose, that her soul accomplished
in 7½ years what others do in 80 years. There is no doubt that
Naomi lived a purposeful life.
She was born with two holes in her heart; one healed naturally,
the other one was successfully repaired in June, 2002, allowing
her to push the boundary of her athletic prowess. Running, swimming,
and karate were her favourites and
in August, 2005, she earned
her red belt. Naomi's enthusiasm for karate convinced her father
it was never too late to take on a new activity.
Naomi, although young, understood social justice. She could not
walk by a street person without offering $2. A visit to Toronto
required bags of toonies if the family were to reach its destination
in good spirits. Her mother Karen supported needy children through
World Vision and, through that, Naomi learned (to her sadness)
that there were children in the world who could not afford to
go to school.
School was, after all, one of the most important activities in
Naomi's life. At the Cambridge Montessori School, Naomi soaked
up everything -- mathematics, French, English, sports. Never
one to boast about her gifts, Naomi would rush to finish her
school work so that she could help younger classmates solve their
school problems. She believed in winning, but not at the expense
of those around her.
Naomi wanted life to be peaceful and joyous. Arguments or demonstrations
of anger, no matter how slight, quickly upset her. She wanted
to laugh and hear people laugh. Steve is a mediator and Naomi
took great interest in his work, often providing her with ideas
for dispute resolution.
Naomi was in the prime growing years of her life in the spring
of 2005, her mind bursting with new knowledge, her athletic ability
drawing rave reviews, when an alert teacher noticed some eye
and co-ordination difficulties.
The instant diagnosis was stunning and cruel: diffuse intrinsic
pontine glioma -- a brain tumour that is inoperable and fatal.
Oceans of tears were shed by family and Friends -- but not by
Naomi. With Steve and Karen, and often Karen's sisters Helen
and Marilyn along with countless neighbours and Friends always
at her side, Naomi lived every minute of every day. She refused
the designation "sick." Even as the tumour's growth reduced her
movements, and then her voice, Naomi continued to go to school,
because "sick children don't go to school," she said.
And when she was no longer strong enough to manage in class,
teachers came to her and read, in French and English, as did
many Friends and cousins. All of us, in our own way, tried to
live each day with the hope that the tumour would shrink.
Those who were with Naomi constantly say she never complained,
she never cried, she never felt sorry for herself. Naomi's positive
outlook, her grace and courage under such otherwise grim conditions
inspired the Ontario communities of Cambridge, Kitchener and
Waterloo, to come together for fund-raising parties that helped
cover expenses.
From the day of Naomi's birth, Karen and Steve knew they were
on a journey with their daughter. When she was diagnosed with
cancer, Karen, a nurse, and Steve took responsibility for all
Naomi's care. With the loving support of family and Friends,
Naomi was able to live at home, with her books, videos and her
special dog Rosco and cat Butterscotch. She lived life as she
could and will continue to inspire us all; her classmates will
have the opportunity to share in Naomi's compassion when they
adopt a needy student abroad.
Susan REISLER is Naomi's aunt.

COOPER,
Marjorie▲
Helen▲ (née
LICK)
Left us on March 28th, 2006, in her 81st year. She passed on
in peace and dignity at her Toronto home in the loving care of
her family and Friends. Her family caregivers extend heartfelt
thanks to Doctor Giovanna
SIRIANNI,
Heather▲
WHALEN, Marlene
CARSCALLEN
and Heather
McLEAN for helping her through a mercifully brief
and intense battle with cancer. Born in Calgary, educated at
the Universities of Toronto, Ottawa and Carleton, Marjorie was
known and admired for her elegance, intellect, dry wit and peaceful
spirit. Betrayed by her body, her sharp mind continued her daily
ritual of completing the Globe and Mail crossword puzzle until
two days before she died. She also was able to enjoy most of
the televised World Championships in both skating and curling.
Marjorie▲ is predeceased by Bill
COOPER, her husband of 54 years,
her brother Gordon
LICK of Ottawa and her daughter Margaret
CRAY
of Holland Landing. She leaves four children, Ian (Toronto),
Doug (Powell River, British Columbia), Judy
EAST (Calais, Maine),
Kathy (Lindsay, Ontario), and eleven grandchildren, Valery, Alexander
and Patrick
COOPER,
Mathew,▲
Devon▲ and Caitlynn
PIANOSI, Graham
and Heather
CRAY,
Jocelyn▲
COOPER, Merryn
LUSH and Alyson
EAST.
She▲ is also survived by her daughters-in-law, Karen
COOPER (nee
PIANOSI,)
Kate▲
SAUNDERS, Sandra
WRIGHT and sons-in-law, Paul
CRAY,
Richard▲
With Bill and four other Friends,
she went on a cycling expedition to New England in 1946, visiting
Funeral service
will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2006, 11 a.m., Grace Church-on-the-Hill,
300 Lonsdale Road, with luncheon and reception to follow in the
Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to
the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care, Mount Sinai Hospital
or the Palliative Care Unit at Southlake Regional Health Centre
in Newmarket where her daughter received such excellent care.
