Couple found dead in bungalow
London police probe the deaths of the woman and man who hadn't been seen for weeks.
By Kate DUBINSKI, Free Press Reporter, Thurs., October 5, 2006
London police are probing how and when a man and woman who lived together on a quiet east-end street died.
The two were found yesterday after neighbours called police, worried they hadn't seen the couple in weeks.
Though there were no obvious signs of trauma to the bodies found in the home, an autopsy will be done as early as today, as Det. Const. Lori-Ann KIRK of the London police major crimes unit.
"They've been in there (dead) for some time -- days, at least," KIRK said outside the couple's bungalow at 1031 King St. E.
Area residents watched as the two blanket-covered bodies were brought out on stretchers just before 6 p.m. yesterday, about two hours after police arrived.
Police said last night they had positively identified the bodies, but had not reached their families.
Neighbours identified the bungalow's occupants as Doug and Carol SHANNON.
The couple kept to themselves, both lived on disability pensions and were in their mid-50s, neighbours said.
"I used to cut their hair and I'd see them around. They had very few visitors," said William ABBOTT, who lives next door and owns a hair-cutting business.
"It's a shock. You don't like to see this for the kids on the street," he added, pausing as the two bodies were loaded into a coroner's vehicle.
The couple had lived in the home, on King between Western Fair and the Kellogg's plant, for about four years, he said.
The last time neighbours saw them was in the middle of last month, as the fair was winding down.
"You'd always see him, at least, going in and out to get smokes and beer," said one neighbour, who didn't want to be identified.
"Then, all of a sudden, you just don't see them anymore."
When the couple's mail began to pile up, neighbours began to worry.
The man had a bad foot and walked with a cane, and the woman had mentioned he might have to have it amputated. Some neighbours thought the two were at the hospital.
ABBOTT said he knocked on the couple's door, and others said they had called the landlord out of concern for the couple.
"A number of calls were made to police (about the occupants)," KIRK said.
Investigators last night were trying to identify the bodies, contact their families and gather evidence from the home, KIRK said.
One neighbour said the man had two grown children, including a son who drove long-distance transport trucks.
