AFFLECK,
Peter
Nelson
Peter AFFLECK passed away peacefully at Saint Paul's Hospital,
Vancouver, on May 1, 2006 with Anne, his wife of 28 years, and
the four sons who were the pride of his life, by his side. A true
British Columbian, Peter was born in Kimberley on May 30, 1951,
the son of the late Rev. Dr. George
AFFLECK and Fronia
AFFLECK,
now of Parksville. Peter was educated at the University of Victoria,
University of British Columbia (B.Sc. Forestry) and the University
of Washington (Masters of Forest Resources); he became a Registered
Professional Forester in 1977. A man who loved the woods, he
spent his entire working life in some aspect of forestry. As
a student he worked in the Port Alberni sawmill and in the woods
as a young forester, he worked for MacMillan Bloedel, then as
a consultant, and later as Vice-President of the Interior Lumber
Manufacturers Association. Most recently, Peter was Vice-President
of Forestry with the Council of Forest Industries of British
Columbia. In this influential position, he was recognized as
a strong spokesman for the forest industry. Peter achieved many
significant accomplishments over the course of his career and
is widely known across the country as a leader and a tireless
advocate for forestry. In his community, Peter was an enthusiastic
and active volunteer. He served two terms as President of the
Winfield and District Minor Hockey Association, and was honoured
by the Province of British Columbia for his work during the Victoria
Commonwealth Games. Above all, Peter valued his family. He was
the proud father of Matthew, Andrew, Patrick and Derrick, each
of whom expresses in their own way the qualities of intelligence,
integrity, athletic ability and love of family that were the
defining marks of Peter's life. He will be remembered by his
many Friends, colleagues and neighbours, all of whom were touched
by his generosity of spirit and his strength of character. In
addition to his wife
Anne (née
MacRAE) and his four sons, Peter
is survived by his loving mother Fronia, his sister Margaret
MITCHELL, her husband Jim and nephews Jack and David of Ottawa
his mother-in- law Betty
MacRAE of Kelowna, brother-in-law Ian
MacRAE and nephew Alec of California. Anne and the boys deeply
appreciate and sincerely thank the skilled and caring nurses,
staff and doctors of the Critical Care Unit and Intensive Care
Unit wards of Saint Paul's Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations
in Peter's name to the Saint Paul's Hospital Foundation (for Critical
Care Unit and Intensive Care Unit) (http:// www.helpstpauls.com)
would be welcomed. A service to celebrate Peter's life will take
place in the Winfield Arena, 9830 Bottom Wood Lake Rd., Winfield,
British Columbia at 3: 00 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2006.

AFFLECK,
Fronia
Eva (née
SCHNIEDER/SNIDER/SNYDER) (1917-2006)
It is with sadness that we announce the death on May 31, 2006
of a remarkable woman, Fronia
AFFLECK, in Parksville, British
Columbia, in her 90th year. Fro was predeceased by her loving
husband George in 2000 and by her much loved son Peter on May 1,
2006. Born on April 22, 1917 to Stanley and Eva
SCHNIEDER/SNIDER/SNYDER,
Fronia
grew up in New Westminster, Winnipeg and Vancouver, where she
helped her parents in their book store from an early age. She
graduated from University of British Columbia with a B.A. and
a B.Ed. and taught in Powell River and Kimberley before becoming
British Columbia Girls' Work Secretary for the United Church
of Canada. In 1945, she met and married George, a United Church
minister, and they began a loving partnership and their ministry
together in Skidegate in Haida Gwaii, and then at churches in
Kimberley, Vernon, Crescent Beach, Powell River, Port Alberni
and Parksville. Fronia also taught in Powell River, Port Alberni,
Scotland (when George pursued graduate studies in theology at
St. Andrews) and Japan (where she and George taught English at
a United Church agricultural mission after their retirement).
Fronia was an intelligent, creative, thoughtful and generous-hearted
person with a twinkle in her eye and an indomitable spirit. Her
lively views, her lifelong commitment to social justice, and
her kind actions touched the lives of many thousands of people
over many years. She was a woman of immense inner strength and
was an inspiration to us all. Hers was a life well lived. Fro
will be missed but she will live in the hearts of those who loved
her and whom she loved: daughter and son-in-law Margaret and
Jim MITCHELL of Ottawa; daughter-in-law Anne
AFFLECK of Vernon,
British Columbia; grand_sons (of whom she was very proud) Jack
and David MITCHELL, and Matthew, Andrew, Patrick and Derrick
AFFLECK; and her many, many Friends. The family would like to
thank the staff of Trillium Lodge in Parksville, British Columbia
for their kind and respectful care over the past two years and
all of the Friends whose visits and letters meant so much to
her. A memorial service to celebrate Fro's life will be held
at on June 5, 2006 at 2: 00 p.m. at Knox United Church in Parksville.
Donations in Fro's memory may be made to the United Church of
Canada Mission and Service Fund, Knox United Church, 345 Pym
Street, Parksville, British Columbia V9P 1C8 or to Trillium Lodge,
Box 940, Parksville, British Columbia V9P 2G9.
