“Mac”
CUDDY was a local icon
Mac CUDDY, an icon in the Canadian agricultural business world
for over 50 years and a strong supporter of his local community
in Strathroy, has died.
Mr. CUDDY, 86, died of complications from multiple sclerosis
at his home north of Strathroy last Wednesday, October 18. His
wife and daughter were by his side.
Best known for his turkey producing operation, Mr.
CUDDY made
a lasting impression on Strathroy residents, both through providing
employment opportunities and making generous donations to local
charities and special events.
Mr. CUDDY grew up in Kerwood. In 1950, after returning home from
the Second World War, he bought a family farm in Adelaide Township
north of Strathroy. He invested $3,000 in a 100-acre farm and
bought 1,500 turkeys. Thus began Cuddy Farms.
Over the years, his family farm grew into an international corporation
that spanned two continents and became the world's largest supplier
of day-old poults and hatching eggs. Cuddy Food Products became
one of the country's largest producers of further-processed turkey
and chicken products.
According to Strathroy-Caradoc Mayor Mel
VEALE,
Mr.
CUDDY always
had a vision and a reason to get up in the morning.
“He will be truly missed,” said Mayor
VEALE. “Mac was certainly
part of the Strathroy-Caradoc fabric. He provided many job opportunites
locally through his large company, and never turned down requests
to help in the community.&rdquo
The Strathroy-Caradoc flag at the municipal office was flown
at half-mast until after Mr.
CUDDY's funeral.
According to Steve
DOWN, president of the Strathroy and District
Chamber of Commerce, Mr.
CUDDY had a major impact on the social
and economic development of the area.
“Mac never lost touch with his own community, as his company
expanded onto the international stage,” said Mr.
DOWN. “Through
his marketing efforts, Strathroy has gained recognition as the
Turkey Capital of Canada.&rdquo
In addition to building an empire in the business world, Mr.
CUDDY
was always aware of the many needs of the community.
He donated a great deal towards special events in the Strathroy
area including Turkeyfest and many sporting events.
The Strathroy Lions Club has had a long and rich relationship
with Mac CUDDY and Cuddy Farms.
“Mac was a very friendly, down-to-earth, community-minded, astute
businessman,” said Lion Don
GEDDY. “We have a very good working
relationship when it comes to organizing Turkeyfest every year.&rdquo
In 2002, the community honoured Mr.
CUDDY's decades of support
through the naming of the sports field next to the old Strathroy
District Collegiate Institute.
At the time, the late Henk
VAN
DYK had many kind words about
Mr. CUDDY.
“Without Mac
CUDDY there are a lot of things that would never
have happened in this town,” said Mr.
VAN
DYK.
Mr. CUDDY lent his support to everything from minor soccer to
the Canada Day celebrations, to Turkeyfest and the Easter Seals
campaign. He was the honourary spokesperson for the 2005 Multiple
Sclerosis Walk in Strathroy.
Over the years, Mr.
CUDDY was the recipient of many special honours
for his work. He received an Honourary Doctor of Laws degree
from the University of Guelph for his achievements in international
agriculture and food processing, and was named “Master Entrepreneur&rdquo
in Ontario's first Entrepreneur of the Year Awards in 1994.
He was named to the London Business Hall of Fame in 1995, and
was inducted into the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1999.
A private funeral service was held at First Baptist Church on
Saturday, October 21.
A public memorial service is planned for this Saturday, October 28,
at the Portuguese Canadian Club, beginning at 2 p.m.
