Doctor remembered for putting others first
Former Lion's head physician at some 1,500 births
By Jim ALGIE,
Sun
Times
Staff,
Page A1
Her colleagues knew her as a cheerful, conscientious physician.
Her children knew her for a dedication to her profession that
carried through more than 40 years of family practice on the
Bruce Peninsula and often interrupted her personal and family
life. Her patients just knew her as Doctor Norma.
Dr. Norma HOPKINSON, 82, died suddenly Thursday at the Grey Bruce
Health Services hospital in Owen Sound.
A memorial service was to he held at 2 p.m. today at Central
United Church in Lion's Head.
Although Doctor
HOPKINSON had moved in recent years to Owen Sound,
Lion's head is the place where both she and her husband, the
late Doctor Mervyn
HOPKINSON, worked together for years. They were
instrumental in the construction in the late 1950s of a community
hospital in the village which served as a health-care base for
people living on the peninsula.
Dr. HOPKINSON, the presiding physician at more than 1,500 births,
was well known throughout the region. Even on the day she died,
daughter Joan
IRVINE met three health-care workers in the hospital
emergency department who were former colleagues or patients,
including one delivered by Doctor
HOPKINSON.
"She lived for other people, I would say,"
IRVINE said in an
interview. "I walked in the night she died into the emergency
room and all the people there had been touched by her. She lived
for other people, to help other people."
When she retired in 1991, Doctor
HOPKINSON told Sun Times reporter
Pam HEAVEN she was one of only three women in the University
of Western Ontario's 1946 graduating class.
Back then there was a quota that allowed only 10 per cent of
medical students to be female.
Following internships at Saint Michael's and Women's College hospitals
in Toronto, she began in practice in the Orillia area where she
met her future husband. They moved together to Lion's head in
1951 and stayed.
For several years afterward, the
HOPKINSONs were the only doctors
on the Bruce Peninsula.
A retired colleague, Doctor Jim
LEESON of Wiarton, knew Norma
HOPKINSON
as a fellow student at University of Western Ontario.
"She always seemed to be a cheerful, conscientious physician
who kept up to date,"
LEESON said in an interview from his Sauble
Beach home.
Dr. HOPKINSON was in a wheelchair during their last meeting,
a dinner out in Owen Sound, but was alert and in reasonably good
health otherwise,
LEESON said.
Because the Bruce Peninsula is a habitat for poisonous Massassauga
rattlesnakes, part of the
HOPKINSON medical practice involved
the treatment of snake bites.
IRVINE recalls their back yard
became a depository for live snakes to be used as sources of
venom for used in snakebite serum.
"People brought them in, they'd get $5 (per snake)… and my cousin,
John, would collect the box and fly it down" to serum producers
in Toronto.
Both her parents were coroners and
IRVINE recalls them studying
materials on unusual causes of death.
"It was an unusual upbringing, I'll tell you that,"
IRVINE said.
Dr. HOPKINSON moved from Lion's head to Owen Sound to be closer
to family. In Owen Sound, she was an active member of the University
Women's Club and a recently formed Unitarian Church group.
Dr. HOPKINSON was also a lifelong music lover and pianist who
faithfully attended concerts of the Georgian Bay Symphony. She
was a passionate amateur photographer, dabbled in watercolour
painting and loved exploring nature. She donated her body to
the University of Western Ontario for medical research.
She maintained an active interest in politics and international
affairs.
"She read two or three newspapers every day,"
IRVINE said. "Towards
the end, the main thing was that she get her newspapers.
Born and raised in Hensall, Ontario, Dr.;
HOPKINSON was among
four children of Elizabeth
THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON and Norman
COOK.
She is survived
by three children and five grandchildren. She was the mother
of Joan IRVINE of Big Bay, Mary
HOPKINSON of Owen Sound and Bruce
HOPKINSON of Lansdowne. She is also survived by a sister, Eleanor
CORLETT of Shelburne and two brothers, Doug
COOK of Hensell and
Bob COOK of Grand Bend.

IRVING,
Ann
I am sad to announce the peaceful passing of Ann
IRVING, on March 10,
2006, just two days prior to her birthday. Sister Mary and I,
Catherine, were fortunate to be in her presence. Beloved Wife
of the late William (Bill,) great Mother to Catherine (Paul
MOUNT,)
the late Scot, Marianne (Colin
McWHINNIE) and Grandmother to
Maxwell, Zachary and Roxana. Born and raised in her beloved Scotland,
as her hero Tommy Douglas, Mother was a tenacious, vibrant and
vivacious character, with amazing strength, learning early from
her Army days stationed in London during the blitz. As newlyweds
they came to Canada where 3 children were born. She was a powerful
advocate for social justice; her passion against racism and all
forms of discrimination strengthened her for more. She worked
tirelessly in the world of politics and latterly within the community,
rewarded with the Commemorative Medal presented during Canada's
125th Anniversary. A family service followed by cremation was
held. A memorial donation can be made to The Sunnybrook and Women's
Health
Centre thanks to Doctor
DEMBO, he gave her another 10 years
that she wouldn't have had.
