Crash claims life of young woman
Girl, 2, suffers minor injuries from collision near Bradford
Police seek pickup truck driver for more clues in accident
By Tim LAI,
Staff
Reporter
The crash was so loud Mike
GEORGIEVSKI heard the bang a hundred
metres away, over the noise from his machinery on a busy stretch
of Highway 11, south of Bradford.
From there, he ran out in the rain and saw a grey Nissan Sentra
that had its passenger and front side crumpled like an accordion.
With two other men yesterday morning,
GEORGIEVSKI spotted a small
child, still in her child seat, crying in the back on the passenger
side.
She had a bit of blood splattered on her face, but no visible
cuts.
Using a box cutter, one man cut the straps of the child seat,
freed the 2-year-old and handed her off to a woman who wrapped
the child up in a blanket. "After we picked her up, she stopped
crying," said
GEORGIEVSKI.
He said he believes the blood on the child came from the 20-year-old
driver of the car who had ended up in the back seat due to the
impact of the collision. "I could see a lot of blood from her
nose and she wasn't moving. There was no reaction, there was
no pulse when we checked her," said
GEORGIEVSKI.
"Her head went under the child seat."
The driver was taken to Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket
where she died around 11 a.m. of her injuries.
The child suffered minor injuries.
According to police, at about 10: 30 a.m. yesterday, the southbound
Sentra was driving down Highway 11 when a grey pickup truck pulled
out of a gas station onto the road.
To avoid hitting the truck, the Sentra swerved, lost control,
and was hit by a northbound Sealtest cube van.
The driver of the van was not injured in the collision.
Police are seeking the driver of the pickup truck who may help
in the investigation.
He is described as a white male between 40- and 50-years-old.
Parts of the Sentra were strewn as far as 15 metres away from
the car on the highway and adjacent ditch where the cube van
had ended up.
Investigators shut down the stretch of highway for several hours
as they tried to piece together the collision.
Those who work and live in the area say the road is notorious
for speeders, adding that police often set up radar traps around
the location of where the woman crashed.
"Everybody flies down this road," said a woman who didn't want
to be identified. She said the child was cared for by another
woman once she was taken out of the car.
"She was asking for her mom," the woman said.
"That lady was amazing. How she held it together, I have no idea."
The impact of the collision caused a slight tremor in the area..
"I was sitting on my bed and all of a sudden, boom," said Deborah
TOBIN, 45, who lives above
GEORGIEVSKI's Four Star Cups Machinery
Ltd. shop. "It shook my apartment."
A man who said he was the brother of the driver who was killed
identified her as Crystal
