OXLEY,
Frances
Eileen, PhD
Frances Eileen
OXLEY, PhD, born in 1923 in Innisfail, Alberta.
Dr. OXLEY demonstrated her brilliant scholastic ability at an
early age, receiving awards and graduating from high school with
Honours. Always a leader and a person of integrity. In 1939,
she entered a teachers' training school in Calgary and taught
for one year in a one-room school in the farming community of
Markerville. In 1942 Dr.
OXLEY enlisted in the Royal Canadian
Air Force and was stationed on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia
as a Flight Control Operator for the duration of World War 2.
Following her honourable discharge from the Canadian Air Force,
Dr. OXLEY enrolled in the University of Western Ontario's Business
Faculty where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Commerce. During
this time she was elected to the presidency of the Canadian National
Alpha
Theta
Fraternity. Dr.
OXLEY continued in her chosen field
of Economics at the University of Indiana in the U.S.A., where
she earned her Masters Degree and her Doctorate in Economics.
In the 1950's Dr,
OXLEY began teaching at Roosevelt University
in Chicago, Illinois, where she became Chairperson of the Dept.
of Economics. During these years, Dr.
OXLEY became a U.S. citizen
in order to, in her own words, be a full participant in the politics
and social progress of the country in which she lived. Her decision
was spurred by the Kent State shootings. Dr.
OXLEY retired from
Roosevelt in the 1990's and continued to live in the City of
Chicago. She was a resident in recent years at Kenwood of Lakeview,
where she made many good Friends. Dr.
OXLEY is survived by her
only sister, Hélène Oxley
WHITE/WHYTE of Calgary. A memorial service
is being planned by the Roosevelt University's Department of
Economics, 312-341-3743. In lieu of flowers, donations may be
made to the Professor Frances Oxley Memorial Fund, c/o Kimberly
Gosell, Institutional Advancement, Roosevelt University, Room
827-C, 430 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, Illinois 60605. Arrangements
by the Cremation Society of Illinois, 773-281-5058.
