THORNBER, Irene Hele (née SKUBAL)
(March 15, 1944-September 25, 2006)
Adored wife of Philip A.P. THORNBER and loving sister of Vera VALANTIC. A former Miss Czechoslovakia, Toronto 1961; English as a Second Language and Home Economics (Family Studies) Teacher, King Edward Public School, Toronto, 1962-1979; Director, Hillcrest Residents and Ratepayers Association; and President and Chief Executive Officer: The Mad Hamper, Irene Ashley Designs and Bijoux Bajan. Irene's design work has been showcased at the Royal Ontario Museum and Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto and throughout the Caribbean, Australia, London and Italy. Irene's talented jewelry designs have perhaps graced more Toronto Ramp Shows than any other Canadian designer. Irene's work was selected by the Australian Fashion Council in the 1980's to accompany a world wide tour of Australian Designer Fashions. Irene's Toronto home became a local institution known for her elegant cocktail and dinner parties. Following a valiant, swift and difficult fight with Colorectal Cancer, Irene died in her 62nd year at her beloved lakefront home in Niagara-on-the-Lake with Philip at her side. Irene's life was celebrated privately by her immediate family. Of Aylmer. Beloved wife of John MacIULIS. Loving mother of Edward MacIULIS and wife Hedi of Dundas and Floretta SKUDDER and husband Jerry of R.R.#5, Aylmer. Also survived by a daughter-in-law Erica STEINKE, a son-in-law Osamu KUNII, 6 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Predeceased by a son Arnold STEINKE, a daughter Irene MacIULIS- KUNII, brothers Herman, Adolph, Otto and Edward ALBRECHT and a sister Adele NEUKAMM. Born in Starkai, Vilkaviskis, Lithuania on May 28, 1916 daughter of the late Friedrich and Auguste (PREUSS) ALBRECHT. Helen was an avid rose gardener and cook. She was a member of Saint_John's Lutheran Church and with her husband grew tobacco at R.R.#5, Aylmer for many years. Friends may call at the H.A. Kebbel Funeral Home, Aylmer on Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. where prayers will be held on Wednesday at 7: 00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Saint_John's Lutheran Church, Aylmer on Thursday, April 6, 2006 at 11: 00 a.m. Interment, Delhi Cemetery. At her home in London on Friday, February 10th, 2006, Mirdza (FILKA) DAMBENIEKS in her 87th year, born in Latvia. Beloved wife of the late Rudolfs DAMBENIEKS (1979.) Dear mother of Andrejs and his wife Laila of Ottawa, Ivan of London, Anita and her husband Randy GAEBEL of Kelowna, British Columbia. Lovingly remembered by her grandchildren; Andrew, Krista, Peter, Diana, Michael and Brian. Friends will be received by the family from 2-4 p.m. Monday at the A. Millard George Funeral Home, 60 Ridout Street South, London (433-5184), where the funeral service will be held in the chapel on Tuesday, February 14th at 11 a.m. with Reverend Aina AVOTINS officiating. Predeceased by her parents Albert and Rita NICHOLAS (née TAILOR/TAYLOR,) brothers Austin, Godfrey and Bobby, sisters Madge and Therese (Terry HALGE.) Will be lovingly remembered and missed by niece Deborah MILLS (née HALGE,) Peter MILLS, Samantha and Laura, Margot DOWNER (nee NICHOLAS) (niece and lifelong friend,) nieces Patricia ROBINSON, Jacquie SMITH (godchild,) Gillian NEWMAN, Jenny SKULLY, and their families, cousins Kaye GERNON, Rita Helen BECK, Tony GERNON and their families, Hazel NICHOLAS (Bobby's wife,) Des HALGE (Terry's husband), and dear Friends at Willowdale Manor, where Marcelle resided for many years.
