WIELAND,
Joyce, 1998 -- Died This Day
Painter, sculptor, quilt maker and filmmaker born on June 30,
1931, in Toronto.
Orphaned at 7, she believed she had no chance of becoming an
artist, so in 1944 she took up fashion design at Toronto's Central
Technical High School. Once there, she was diverted to the arts
program by the painter Doris
McCARTHY, who said she "drew like
an angel." After staging a Toronto exhibition in 1959, she produced
a portfolio of highly personal art featuring nationalist, feminist
and environmental themes. She was probably the only Canadian
artist in a public gallery with a painting of a naked male with
an erection, or with art that used menstrual blood as a central
image. In 1957, she married the artist and jazz musician Michael
SNOW and from 1962 to 1970 they lived in New York, where she
made "underground" films that brought her a measure of success.
In 1976, she made The Far Shore, a feature film starring Frank
Moore set in the Canadian shield. In 1971, the exhibition of
her work at The National Gallery of Canada was that gallery's
first major exhibition devoted to the work of a living Canadian
woman artist. In 1987, the Art Gallery of Ontario mounted a major
travelling exhibition of her work, its first retrospective of
a living Canadian woman artist.
