Bill spent many of his happiest years
growing up in Kingston, from the time he entered Wolf Cubs many
years ago until he retired as Deputy Commandant of the Commissionaires
in Toronto in 1994, Bill had spent a total of 53 years in uniform
as a Cub, Boy Scout, Air Cadet, Royal Military College, Army,
and the Corps. Perhaps his greatest love for his early Army days
were those when, as a very junior officer, he proudly wore the
dark tartan kilt of the Black Watch. On his first tour in Cyprus
(1964) he had the very good fortune to be attached to a British
Army Regiment - The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Working with
'The Skins' made him regain his old love of serving with a really
great infantry regiment. Bill served in many places in Canada,
Korea 1953-54, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization 1959-62,
Cyprus 1964, Cyprus 1966, Kashmir 1972-73. Following his retirement
from the army in Toronto in 1977, Bill bought a Restaurant/Pub
which he named 'Raines'(Mother's maiden name) and 'Major's'(after
his rank). After cremation there will be a small graveside service
in Cataraqui Cemetery in Kingston at his parents' grave site.
