BREEN, Faith Wood (1917-2005)
Member, Arts and Letters Club of Toronto; Heliconian Club of Toronto Society of Canadian Artists (honourary lifetime member). Faith Wood grew up in Sackville, New Brunswick, and spent many happy childhood summers at Mount Uniacke, built by her ancestor Richard John UNIACKE, where her lifelong love for painting and nature was born. After graduating in 1938 from Mount Allison University, she settled in Toronto to pursue her career teaching and painting portraits and landscapes. In 1950, she married Melwyn BREEN, one of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's pioneering television director-producers, and continued to paint while raising her three children. Upon Melwyn's death in 1968, she found renewed energy in her painting, and developed a fine reputation for her uniquely sensitive approach to portraiture. In later years she moved to her country home and studio outside Gravenhurst, Ontario, returning frequently to the city to spend time with her family and many Friends, while continuing to draw inspiration both from the landscape of Muskoka and travels to the Maritimes and elsewhere. Memorial service at Church of Saint Simon the Apostle on Tuesday, January 10th at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
