MUNK,
Olga
Wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, Holocaust survivor.
Born February 6, 1911, in Temesvar, Austria-Hungary. Died September 19,
2007, in Toronto of heart failure, aged 96.
By Paul MUNK,
Page L6
Olly's early years were easy - her father, a successful pharmaceutical
importer, provided a magnificent home with servants and drivers.
As a young girl she spoke, read and wrote in four languages -
Hungarian, German, French and English.
Olly loved to sing in the choir at her synagogue. After completing
high school at 16, she and her older sister were sent to a finishing
school in Vienna, where Olly developed her love of opera and
classical music. Back in Temesvar, she graduated with a teaching
degree.
At 22, Olly met and married Simon
BRUNNER, a young land-owning
aristocrat from neighbouring Hungary. They lived an idyllic existence
on a farming estate with a large staff. Four years later their
son, John, was born. Then tragedy struck. Simon developed pemphigus,
an autoimmune disease, and died. Olly was only 29.
As a widow with a toddler in the shadow of the Second World War,
Olly left the farm thinking a move to Budapest would be safer.
At 32, she met Louis
MUNK, who was divorced and had a child,
Peter. In late 1943, Olly and Louis married.
Three months later, Adolf Eichmann and the Gestapo stormed into
Budapest: The Jews of Hungary were to be exterminated. Olly and
Louis were fortunate and wealthy enough to obtain a train ride
with Rezsö Kasztner to escape.
They spent six weeks in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Olly
and Louis were required to do manual labour such as housekeeping
and cleaning toilets. On the first morning a camp supervisor
asked Olly why she had not started working. She explained she'd
never done this type of work before and did not know what to
do.
The entire family was eventually sent to Switzerland, surviving
the Holocaust.
In the spring of 1946 in Zurich, Olly and Louis had a son, Paul.
As refugees with limited rights in Switzerland they decided to
move to Toronto, where Louis's brother lived.
It was a difficult financial situation. For a few years Olly
taught kindergarten. Her main entertainments were listening to
the Metropolitan Opera on the radio from New York every Saturday
afternoon and visiting with family and Hungarian Friends.
When Olly was 66, she buried her second husband. She became more
devout, attending synagogue every Saturday.
She was an incredibly honest and highly moral person - there
was only black or white. Her love of Israel was another passion.
Family became paramount - she loved being with her grandchildren
and great-grandchildren. A fourth great-grandchild was born three
weeks after she passed away, continuing the circle of life in
a new century.
Paul MUNK is Olga's son.
