It is with sadness that the family of Carl WHITING announces his passing on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at the C.E.E. Hospital of Bluewater Health in Petrolia. Carl was 73. Beloved husband of 52 years to Ferne (née BROADBENT,) also of Petrolia. Dear father of Connie and Rod BRAY of London, and their children Sarah and Siobhan, Terry and Maryanne WHITING of Winnipeg, and their children Willyn, Angus, Holly and Duncan, Howard and Collette WHITING of Shelburne, and their children Daniel, Stephanie and Lindsay, Joel and Donna WHITING of Oil Springs and their children Emma and Neil, and Becky and Derrick FULTON of Oil Springs, and their children Kaegan and Ronan. Carl was the eldest of 11 children born to Howard (1960) and Blanche (2000) WHITING. Predeceased by a brother Frank (1967) and a sister Shirley ZAVITZ (2006.) Carl is survived by four brothers: Ray (Marilyn) of Oil Springs, Gordon (Bernice), Les (Karen), and Ross (Lindy) all of Petrolia and four sisters Marian (Joe KERWIN,) Gloria (Jim) MATTHEWS of Sarnia, Grace (Charlie BRIMLEY) of Ottawa and Wilma WHITING of Bowmanville, numerous nieces and nephews, a sister-in-law, Audrey FARR of Oil Springs and a brother-in-law, Cliff ZAVITZ of Camlachie. Carl was a retiree of Polysar and was also a Lambton County farmer. Friends and family will be received on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Needham-Jay Funeral Home, Petrolia. She found her calling in long-running Prince Edward Island musical Anne of Green Gables
For 30 years, the mezzo-soprano played Marilla Cuthbert at the Charlottetown Festival in Prince Edward Island. The part 'set me free to be myself. That's exactly what happened'

Halifax -- On Prince Edward Island, Elizabeth MAWSON's name is synonymous with Marilla Cuthbert, the stern spinster who raises the red-headed heroine in Lucy Maud Montgomery's legendary story, Anne of Green Gables.
The Toronto-born mezzo-soprano first arrived on the island in 1968 to take part in the Charlottetown Festival. Three years later, she landed the role of Marilla in the musical-theatre adaptation of the famous book. The part was hers for the next 30 years.
Ms. MAWSON's voice and elegant presence on stage became an anchor in the musical and provided the show with a certain continuity, as actors came and went over the years. She played opposite as many as 11 different young actresses in the role of Anne.
During the three decades she played Marilla, she fell in love with not only the role, but the island. "It's the most incredible thing in my life. And, actually, this is the biggest thing in my life. I feel that I'm really more myself [here]," she told Charlottetown's The Guardian in an interview in 2000. "You know, how you become another person when you are home and you have your children, your family, your bills to pay and everything else. But, on Prince Edward Island, I'm set free. Playing Marilla has set me free to be myself. That's exactly what happened."
Jack McAndrew, the festival's producer from 1968 to 1975, remembers trying out Ms. MAWSON for the role of Marilla. During the audition, she sang The Words, in which Marilla mourns the loss of her brother Matthew and laments her inability to express her emotions.
"She was the soaring, pure soprano," Mr. McAndrew said. "She gave the song a whole new meaning. It was incredibly touching."
Discussing her audition with then-festival artistic director Alan Lund, Mr. McAndrew said they decided that if they hired Ms. MAWSON she would change the nature of the show because of her strengths as a singer. At the time, she was replacing comedic actor Barbara Hamilton, who had premiered the role in Charlottetown. While they feared the show might lose some of its humour, they agreed that Ms. MAWSON should be hired.
Mr. McAndrew said their fears were never realized. "She put her own stamp on it," he said. "She just gave the role a touch of class."
Raised in Toronto, she was one of six children whose father ran a paint store on Yonge Street. Although her family was not particularly musical, she proved to possess a natural gift for song. In her teens, she began singing in public and performed in army concerts during the Second World War. In the mid-1940s, she took up singing in earnest and began studying with a music teacher in Toronto. It was there that she met a fellow student named Howard MAWSON. The couple later married and began singing together with the Eaton Operatic Society. For close to 50 years, they volunteered as soloists at St. Andrew's United Church in Toronto.
Within a few years of their meeting, Mr. MAWSON helped found the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Toronto branch, one of several hundred such groups around the world devoted to the study or performance of the 14 light comedic operas written by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan between 1871 and 1896. Not unexpectedly, Ms. MAWSON appeared in several G&S productions in Toronto over the years.
In 1966, she played Martha in Faust and Flora in La Traviata with the Canadian Opera Company. She also performed at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. Her roles there included Hebe in H.M.S. Pinafore in 1960, and Marcellina in The Marriage of Figaro in 1964 and 1965.
In 1968, Ms. MAWSON and her husband joined the Charlottetown Festival company. When she arrived in Prince Edward Island, she had already celebrated her 40th birthday and, having worked as a secretary in a government office to help pay the bills, looked forward to doing what she loved best. Her first role in Anne of Green Gables was that of Rachel Lynde, the village busybody.
Her husband took on a couple of supporting roles that season but never returned to the company. But Ms. MAWSON went back year after year.
Mr. McAndrew said Ms. MAWSON helped to give the production stability. "She became the anchor for Anne."
Off-stage, Ms. MAWSON loved to play bridge, organize picnics for her colleagues or spend lazy summer afternoons at the beach flying a kite. On the streets in Charlottetown, she could often be seen wearing a large-brimmed straw hat and skipping down the street. Almost every Sunday, she could be found singing as a guest soloist at any church that cared to ask.
"She just embraced life," said her friend Gracie Finley, who played Anne for several years.
Ms. MAWSON's Friends said that as a performer, she was the consummate professional who felt privileged to be a part of the musical. She lacked a huge ego, did not take herself too seriously and loved nothing more than to share stories with Friends.
"Until the day she died, she sang like a bird," said her friend and fellow cast member Glenda Landry. "Her voice floated on air."
Ms. Landry, who played the part of Diana Barry and shared a dressing room with Ms. MAWSON for a decade, said they shared many happy festival moments. "Every night before we went on, we would sing harmonies to warm up," she told The Guardian. "We would all hold hands during the overture."
Ms. MAWSON's affection for the long-running production embraced everyone. Every night during the season, she treated the stage crew to cookies or some other sweet.
Ms. Landry remembers the fun Ms. MAWSON and the female members of the cast had putting together a Ladies of Avonlea calendar as a fundraiser in the early 1990s. Dressed in corsets and long pantaloons, Ms. MAWSON showed no qualms in striking a sexy pose for the camera.
In 2000, however, she was suddenly forced to retire from the stage. She had returned to Charlottetown prepared to perform that season but realized that Alzheimer's disease had firmly taken hold. "She had a memory like a steel trap, but she was forgetting all her lines," Ms. Landry said.
Other members of the cast started to see the signs five years earlier, when Ms. MAWSON would occasionally say the wrong word during a performance. She continued to perform because others in the cast were always able to cover for her, and because the mistakes were so small the audience didn't notice.
Despite being unable to perform during the 2000 season, Ms. MAWSON chose to remain in Charlottetown and enjoy her last summer on the island. "Isn't it wonderful, how this beautiful, little show [Anne of Green Gables] has survived for so long in the hearts of so many people?" she told The Guardian in 2000. "I think it's because it touches the heart."
Elizabeth MAWSON was born February 14, 1927, in Toronto. She died February 16, 2008, at the Humber River Regional Hospital in Toronto. She was 81 and suffered from Alzheimer's disease. She is survived by sons Allan and Douglas, and sister Beryl FARR. She was predeceased by her husband in 2004. He also suffered from Alzheimer's disease.

Passed away suddenly after a brief illness, on Monday, May 05, 2008, at Saint Mary's Hospital, Kitchener. Beloved daughter of Audrey and the late Thomas RODEN. Dearest sister of Robert (Margo) of Ottawa. Dear aunt of Emily FARR (Neil,) Fiona and Ian RODEN. Great aunt of Bradley FARR. After graduating from Queen's University with a B.N.Sc., Lynne went on to obtain her R.N. from Toronto Western Hospital and her nursing practitioner degree from the University of Toronto. Lynne spent many dedicated years working in Public Health in both Toronto and Kitchener. She was also an active volunteer, serving on many health related committees and also with Zohta. Lynne will be sadly missed by her family and Friends. Special thanks to the Intensive Care Unit and other hospital staff at both Saint Mary's and Grand River Hospitals, and the staff at the Delta Hotel who have all provided such wonderful support to Lynne and her family during the last 6 months. She was the beloved wife of Michael RYAN, loving mother to Carol FARRELL (Jim), Bill MAHON, Barry MAHON, step-mother to Michelle AUDETTE and Sean RYAN, dear Nana to Christopher and Sara and cherished sister of Isabel LILEY, Joan PENNEY and Brian HARE. Maisie was predeceased by her parents John HARE and Rosina Fitzgerald HARE and her beloved grand_son Ryan FARRELL. Jeanette was cherished mother to Karen BAUMAN/BOWMAN and Rick, Donna PERRIE and husband Mike and Douglas LAMB. She was loving Nana to Scot, Trevor and Alysa. She will be greatly missed by her special friend John FARRELL and her sister Helen WELSH of Virginia, U.S.A. as well as her large family in Scotland and her many Canadian Friends and family. The family of Les BROWN are saddened by his death on Sunday, March 9, 2008 at Toronto Western Hospital. Les was born in New Liskeard, Ontario, on November 8, 1918, the fifth child of George BROWN and Annie SAVAGE formerly of Sheffield. His family were survivors of the Temiskaming fire of 1922. Les attended Public and High School in New Liskeard and graduated from Queen's University in 1943 with a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering. He served in the Royal Canadian Engineers in World War 2. His working career was with Ontario Hydro head Office. Les is survived by his wife Louise POLLEY whom he married in Toronto September 29, 1945, and two children, Linda REID (Pierce,) Toronto; and Ken BROWN (Kathleen,) Peterborough; and five grandchildren, Ian REID (Joelle,) Toronto Heather REID, Toronto; Fraser BROWN (Julie DEFOY,) Gatineau, P.Q.; Seth BROWN (Sara,) Toronto; and Liam BROWN, Toronto. Also survived by three sisters, Jessie CONNELLY, Newmarket; Lily BEATON, Orillia; and Jean BOND, Barrie; and sister-in-law Lilias PALMATEER, Peterborough and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by siblings George BROWN, St. Catharines; Anne FARROW, Penetanguishene; and Sid BROWN, Agincourt. In 1966-67 Les and Louise built two cottages on Wolf Lake and the forty years he worked and sometimes relaxed there were the best years of his life. He took early retirement and he and Louise moved to a new home in Cavan in 1976, returning to Toronto in 2003 to live in Christie Gardens. Cremation and private interment will take place. A Memorial Service will be held on April 5th at 11 a.m. at Kingston Road United Church, 975 Kingston Rd., Toronto. Visitation will be before the service and a time of fellowship and lunch will follow. George, in his 70th year, died peacefully in his sleep at Brampton Civic Hospital after a two year battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He fought bravely right to the end; no doubt he wanted to see his pear trees bloom just one more time. George was the devoted husband of Mary Ann (DE GABRIELE,) loving father of Francis and Emanuel and daughter-in-law Heidi, and cherished Nannu of Christopher (18) and Patrick (15). He was a hard working man with old fashioned Christian values, devoted to his family and to his faith. Family and Friends may call at the Ward Funeral Home, 52 Main St. South, Brampton, on Wednesday, March 12th from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 13th at 11: 00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, 940 North Park Drive, Brampton. Interment at Meadowvale Cemetery, 7732 Mavis Road, Brampton. A reception will follow at The Malta Band Club, 5745 Coopers Avenue, Mississauga. Flowers gratefully accepted. Predeceased by nephew Christopher POFF (Christine KEMPI) of Port Dover, and survived by many nieces and nephews, Vicki SIMONS (Rodney) of Belleville, Liz GOW (Bob) of Orillia, Barb BLACK (Jeff) of Oakville, Tom ELLIOT/ELLIOTT (Lisa) of Cobourg, Rob ELLIOT/ELLIOTT (Shirley) of Stamford, Connecticut., Peter ELLIOT/ELLIOTT (Katie MORRISON) of Midhurst, Kari GALASSO (Ken ARNOLD) of Inverary, Linda GALASSO (Kevin ARMITAGE) of Mill Valley, California., Michael GALASSO (Kelly) of Waterloo, Kim FARWELL of Ft. There will be no public visitation or funeral. A celebration of Jim's life will be held in Sudbury at a later date. The family would like to thank Suzanne CRAWFORD and her staff at Saint Anne's Place, Toronto, for supporting Jim as he lived his life in the last four years, on his own terms. Passed away at the Trillium Health Centre, Mississauga after a brief illness on Thursday, May 1, 2008. Howard SMITH in his 74th year. Beloved husband for 50 years of Yvonne. Loving dad of Paul, Don and his wife Mary. Dear gramps of Madison and Rachel. Survived by his sister Alma FARYNIUK and her husband Tap and their family. Predeceased by his brother Donald and survived by his sister-in-law Ruth. Howard will also be remembered by the Bollman families. Howard was a member of the 1955 Canadian Champion Minto Cup Lacrosse Team and will be remembered by his former teammates.
